Do You Eat Breakfast Every Day?

A big test makes students feel fear and anxiety(焦虑的). But taking tests is something faced by all students at all levels of schools. How do you prepare for the tests as well as reducing fear?  Maybe they will be of use to you.

Calm down. Don't panic.  You will be focusing on the fear, and not the coming test. Many times, fear can even prevent you doing well. If you panic, take deep breaths, and think that you can do this.

 People who make a detailed study plan often have an easier time of their studies. When making a study plan, calculate(计算) the amount of time you have left before the exam date. Is the exam in a month? Did the teacher spring the test on you suddenly? Is it a mid-year exam that has been waiting since the start of the year? Depending on the time, make your study plan long or short.

Take notes and ask questions. If you come across what you can't understand, write it down.  And don't worry—you aren't stupid if you ask questions. Questions mean that you're actively learning. Besides, a question ahead of time could mean a better grade on the exam. Good study skills help to achieve better results with less effort. So use the ones that work for you.

Bicycles are becoming more and more popular all over the world. In every country, people use bicycles for work, for sports or just for  (乐趣). Bicycle riding is good exercise. It helps people become h and can make the riders' hearts and lungs strong. It is also good for the environment because bicycles do not  (导致) pollution.

If we want to grow as people, we can't just depend on our own evaluation(评 价) of how we're doing. We also need to know what other people think about our performance. Receiving feedback(反馈) from others can help us see the larger picture and show us a way forward to success. However, someone has to give that feedback, and sometimes, that someone will be you. How should you deal with this?

First things first—if you notice a situation in which some feedback would be helpful, give it as soon as you can. If you wait until the matter disappears from the person's mind. they might not understand what you're trying to tell them. Take the person to a safe, comfortable place and offer your advice in private.

When you're giving feedback, it's important to keep in mind that no one likes to be told they're doing a bad job. Make sure you give an equal(相等的) amount of good feedback to balance out(平衡) anything bad. Like the saying goes, "A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down.

All good feedback shares something in common. First, it should help achieve a goal. It's less useful to tell your friends that their dish tastes "interesting" than it is to suggest adding a little salt. Feedback should also look toward to the future. You can't change what's already happened, but you can prevent it from happening again. Tell your friends they should take more notes in class instead of talking about how they should have studied harder for the big history exam they failed.

Finally, don't think your suggestion is the only correct way to deal with a situation. You might even end up with some feedback on your feedback. Don't take it personally—it can only help you give better advice next time.

On February 12, 2019, Brendon Fontaine blew out five candles on a birthday cake."He loved the cake so much," says his mother, who lives in Winnipeg with Brendon."I had to hide it in the back of the fridge."

Brendon's surprise came from Cakes for Kids, a group of home bakers(烘焙 师) who know that a simple birthday cake can be uncommon for poor families like the Fontaines.

The group was set up three years ago by Christy Rogowski, a 40-year-old who works in health care software, and her partner, Wendy Singleton. "Imagining a child who wasn't going to have a birthday cake was really upsetting," Rogowski says.

A call-out on the Internet for volunteers finally added 150 bakers to their name list. When volunteers first apply(申请), they're asked why they want to do so. "Some people have said that they didn't have a cake on their birthday growing up, and they know how important it is," says Singleton. More commonly, though, they say they want families in need to know that their neighbors care about them.

The names of the cake receivers are provided by community organizations and Winnipeg Child and Family Services. A child might receive a cake because the family is poor. Sometimes a child is sick, leaving the family too busy to make the treat themselves. Cakes also go to children living in foster care(寄养). Jodi Korolyk, a worker with Winnipeg Child and Family Services, has so far ordered birthday cakes for five of the almost 800 kids in their system. "It shows the child they have a lot of people there to support them," she says.

By the end of last year, Cakes for Kids had baked over 575 cakes to mark kids' birthdays, and the baking continues. Rogowski and Singleton are even considering developing the program nationally and also providing cakes for old people who live alone. After all, there's no age difference when it comes to the positive role of a well-timed cake.

Traffic lights are red, yellow and green. They are very important signals. Traffic lights are usually placed at busy street corners to help control traffic. Sometimes, they are on streets near schools and shops, too. Most young children are taught what each of the colored lights means, so everybody can stay safe.

The first traffic signals were used for trains. The signals were put alongside railway tracks(轨道). The color red was used to mean "stop" because it warned people of danger. A red light was also the easiest color to see from a distance. Train drivers could see the red "stop" light ahead and had enough time to slow down and stop their trains. A green light was used to mean "take care" and a white light meant "go".

However, there were many dangerous accidents on the train tracks. Some train drivers thought a star shining in the night sky was a white light that meant "go". So the signals were swapped. The "go" light was changed to green and the "take care" light was changed to white.

During these times, people traveled by train or in carts pulled by horses. Years later, when cars were built, people began to drive them because they could travel much faster than horses. However, the road rules for drivers were not very clear and many people were hurt crossing the roads. Yellow warning signs had to be placed beside the roads to remind drivers to take care and allow people to cross safely.

Today, towns and cities all over the world have traffic lights. Red and green lights match the signals used on the railways. Yellow lights are easy to see, so they are used to warn drivers that they should slow down and prepare to stop.

Bruce Kelley, a reporter, interviewed people and asked. "What are some of the highlights(最精彩的部分) of your life so far?" Here are some of her answers

Technology will make appliances smart in the future. Your fridge, for example, will suggest what to cook based on the food you already have. With the help of RFID chips (无线射频识别芯片), which will record the date that you bought each kind of food and even "read"this information, your fridge will be able to tell you what to cook or to buy.

Houses that think

 In the future, you will not have to repaint them. The walls can learn about your likes and dislikes through the technology called OLED. A computer network will connect these walls with everything else in your house so that your house will then use that knowledge to control the environment for you.

Scientists today are starting to build friendlier, smarter robots that people will feel more comfortable having around in the house. Friendly robots will be able to show feelings with their faces, just like humans. These robots will do housework and they will even take care of children and the elderly.

You can't wait to live a life like this.  It is possible that it will be a part of your life in the next 10 years. Perhaps sooner. Much of the technology is already here.

Beth Jones was only eight years old when she first tried playing the drums. This was during a lunchtime music club at school, which she only went to because it was snowing  (heavy). Of all the musical instruments, the drums were  (interesting) to Beth. She thought it was cool that there were many different shapes and sizes of drums, and she wanted to hit  (they), to see what they sounded like.

Lu Jialei, 14, from Hangzhou Foreign Language School,  (赢) the CCTV Chinese Character Spelling Competition on Oct. 18th.  (大约) 160 people took part in it. The host read a word to the student and  (解释) its meaning and gave example sentences. The student is  (要求) to write down the word.

Winning the competition was a " (惊喜)" to Lu. "I am not the smartest one," she said. "But I pay  (注意) to details." To prepare for the competition, she and her teammates studied the Chinese Dictionary for 10 days. There are  (多) than 56,000 words in it.

"When others care about the story, she looks at how writers use words and sentences to express  (他们自己)," said Su Yunsheng, Lu's Chinese teacher. Su is happy to see students like Lu find the  (美) of Chinese language. "Learning to write Chinese characters is an important part of inheriting (传承) culture," said Su.

In ancient times, people carved(雕刻) small persons or animals out of soft stones which could be carried along with. While in some  countries, statues(雕塑) are carved from hard stones and they do not change easily. In summer, the hot sun  on these statues and in winter the snow falls on them, but they still remain beautiful.

Stone is strong and long-lasting.  , it is good enough for different houses. Houses built of stone do not catch fire as easily as ones made of wood. Some stones are colored, so they make the  look wonderful. People can also get a fire  stones to make food.

Besides, some kinds of stones can be used to make jewelry. We've found stones are really amazing. 

Do you get in trouble for feeding your dog on food from dinner under the table? A new study suggests that by sharing "people food", you might actually be helping to keep your pet healthy.

Many dogs are fed dry processed food. Science has shown that a diet of processed food is not healthy for humans. Scientists from the University of Helsinki, in Finland, says this diet is not good for our pet dogs, either.

The scientists discovered that the foods a dog might find in an owner's home─ such as eggs, fish, meat and vegetables─may be better than a diet of just dog food. This is because having different kinds of food leads to more variety(多样性) in microbes, which are little living things, too small to be seen with our eyes. There are millions of them in human and animal bodies. Some are bad for us, but many are good for us, and they play important roles in helping us digest(消化) food.

A total of 8,500 young pet dogs took part in the study. 4,500 of them were under 6 months old, and the rest were between 6 and 18 months old. The owners were asked about what foods they had fed their pets and how often. When the dogs reached adulthood, their owners reported that about 20% of the dogs showed CE symptoms(慢性肠胃不适症状) such as weight loss. However, if dogs had been fed a mixed diet while young, it was 22% less possible for them to experience CE symptoms later in life.

Dr. Anna Hielm-Bjorkman told The Times of London, "Dog foods on sale are described as providing a complete diet...But what we show is that variety is important. Nobody would give 12 years of the same food to a child ———why should a dog be different?"

My dear boys and girls, good morning. Today I'm going to talk to you, about my understanding of learning history.

Many of you may think it is a terrible thing to study history. You may often wonder why we students should study something that has nothing to do with our own lives. If you think that way, I should say you are far from the truth.

In fact, if we study history, we can learn quite a lot about personal stories and events(事件) of people just like us. The people who came before us helped build and develop the country we are living in. Their ideas often solved many of our problems and troubles. Studying the past helps us to understand what our ancestors' lives were like. And it also helps us to see how their experiences have shaped our own life.

To be honest, . Some of what we study in history helps us understand the mistakes of the past. And these mistakes will help people not to do the same wrong things. People often learn from the past to have a better future.

Whether we like the subject of history or not, we must understand the importance of the events and the people who came before us. Our ancestors' decisions have influenced our own life. Similarly, the decisions of our own generation will finally influence those who come after us. In this only way, the world is truly connected.

History is not just a study of the past. History is the study of people, places, and events that can influence the future.

For as long as we can remember, one of the most popular ways parents use to punish their children has been the "time out".

It seems that it is a good idea: the child sits on his own to reflect(反思) on what he has done. Then, when the time is up, he will apologize and learn from the mistake.

However, just because it's something that's been done for years, that doesn't mean it is the right thing to do. In fact, very often, children don't sit nicely and think about what they've done. Instead, they need to be told a few (or many) times to go back to their places and stay quiet. They're not reflecting on why they are in the "time out" at all. More likely than not, they're probably just really angry, and so are the parents. In the end, both the parents and the children make each other unhappy, or even angry.

What can parents do to change this situation? You may have already heard of things like peaceful parenting(育儿) and gentle parenting. These focus on the relationship between parent and child through building trust and love. So, instead of starting a "time out", try something called "time in". A "time in" needs both parent and child to stay close until both get calm. After that, the parent and child can discuss what happened and solve the problem together. If the child can make changes, everyone can then move on.

As we all know, punishment and violence(暴力) seldom work and will never teach the children what the right way to act is. A "time in" can be the great time for the children to learn through mistakes. Kids learn how to build their emotional and social skills through difficult situations. So, instead of punishing them for acting their age, we can use chances to teach and guide them to a place of learning. 

A "time in" may take more time, but it does work.

Wildwood School Library Guide

This will offer you some information about our school library. You can use this guide to help your kids use our library.

Service hours:

3:00 p.m.—5:30 p.m. on school days; 8:30 a.m.—11:00 a.m. on weekends

On school days, your kids may borrow or return books during opening hours only when his classroom teacher allows him to. At the weekend, our library is open to both you and your kids.

Borrowing:

Each student can borrow one or two books at a time: More books can be borrowed only for class reading activities and school research.

Returning:

Books borrowed from the library can be kept for 12 days. The books must be returned before the due(到期的) date or the kid can't borrow other books.

Damaged(受损的) or Lost Books:

When a book is returned in a damaged condition, the kid will have to pay three dollars for the damage. Full price must be paid if a book is lost. We encourage students to carry their library books in plastic bags to protect them from rainy weather.

Love, joy and the warm feeling of getting together don't cost a thing. But gifts do cost money. So what's a poor family to do?

Before New Year, I told my mother that the only thing I1 was a pogo stick(弹簧单高跷). However, my mother said it was so expensive that we couldn't 2 one.

On a Saturday before New Year, my family 3 together. While my mother and I were picking out the gifts, my dad said, "I'll be back soon—I need to see something in the tool area." Later, he came back with a long box. I remember wondering if there was a 4 in it.

When we arrived home, my dad put the box in the garage. While my parents were busy with their chores, I 5 walked out to the garage and found the box. I was so 6 and I knew as soon as I opened that magical box, my bright, shiny pogo stick would appear. No such 7 ! Inside the box was a 8 old broom (扫帚).

That New Year morning, I got some nice gifts 9 I didn't get the present that I really wanted.
