Five Tips for Safe Running

We all know that exercise is good for our health. Running, for example, may help to protect against heart disease and other health problems, but it can be hard on the body. 

Take it easy. Do not run too much, too soon or too fast. Most people get running injuries when they push themselves too badly. The body needs time to get used to increases in distance or speed. 

Listen to your body. Most running injuries do not come unexpectedly.  They may include body aches, sore muscles(肌肉酸痛) and pain that does not go away.

 There is no single best shoe for every runner. You should find the shoes that offer the best fit and support to your feet. More importantly, you should replace your shoes every 500 to 800 kilometres.

Take good notes. Take time after each run to write down what you did and how you felt. Look for patterns, things that happen over and over again. These notes will help you find the best way of exercise for you.

Cross-train. As we said earlier, running is hard on your body. So physical fitness experts suggest some form of cross-training to improve muscle balance and to help you stay injury-free. They say swimming, yoga, and riding a bicycle are good exercise to be mixed with running.  

Though eating out sometimes (seem) to have become popular for many young people in recent years, it costs a lot. Eating out once or twice week may be affordable, but doing this most days adds up. There can be even (high) cost on your health. Some researchers have found that there is a direct relationship between the increase in food eaten outside and the rise in (weigh) problems.

If you are not going to suffer this problem, then I suggest that the next time you go to your grandma's home 56 dinner, get a few cooking tips from her. Cooking food can not only be fun but be cheap. Of course, above all, the food you cook is healthy! 

Tears went out of my eyes when I talked to my mum on the phone.It was 7:30 in the evening. She was still working in the (田地). These are my parents. They are always working hard. My father works from seven in the morning to nine in the evening. And my mum is much (繁忙的) than him because all the housework is left to her. Besides, she also looks after the vineyard(果园).

There is a small thing we use every day. We usually put it in the bathroom. Without it, we might have tooth problems. Can you gwhat it is? Yes, it's the toothbrush. But do you know anything about its history?

According to some research, before toothbrushes a , the ancient Chinese people cleaned their teeth with some small tree branches. About 800 years ago, people made a kind of brushes with pig hair and bamboo. It might be the world's e form of toothbrushes.

Around the 15th century, the Chinese toothbrushes found its way into Europe. It became popular among local people soon. The i of toothbrushes was not as famous as that of paper-making, but it was very useful in daily life. Today we have a good h of brushing teeth. We should thank the ancient Chinese for it.

It was 12:45 pm on January 2, 2007. Fifty-year-old Wesley Autrey was waiting for the train at a subway station in New York. His two daughters, aged four and six, were with him.

Suddenly, a sick man fell down on the platform. The man, 20-year-old Cameron Hollopeter, got up, but then fell again—this time, onto the track(轨道) between the two rails. A train was coming into the station. It was a frightening moment.

But Mr Autrey wasn't frightened. He looked at the man, and he looked at the space that the man was in. It was about half a meter deep. And he thought, "The train is going to travel over this man. If he tries to get up, the train will kill him. But if he lies on the ground and doesn't move, he'll be OK."    ▲    

He jumped. Mr Autrey lay on top of Mr Hollopeter, and kept him down on the ground. The train driver saw them. His heart missed a beat, but he couldn't stop in time. Five subway cars traveled over the two men before the train stopped.

The people on the platform were shocked. When Mr Autrey heard the shouting from the people, he shouted back, "We're OK down here, but I have two daughters up there. Let them know their father's OK." People on the platform clapped and cheered. They were amazed at Mr Autrey's courage. Subway workers helped the two men out. An ambulance took Mr Hollopeter to the hospital. He had no serious injuries(受伤)

In an interview on a TV show, Mr Autrey said, "The only thing that happened to me was my blue hat got dirty."

He added, "I wasn't brave. I didn't do anything special. I just saw someone who needed help. I did what I thought was right."

①Have you ever heard of Pi Day? You may think it is all about having pies. That's only partly right. Pi Day is actually about maths! Every year on March 14th, maths lovers and scientists celebrate Pi Day to honour the special number (3.14159…).

②    ▲     It was founded in 1988 by Larry Shaw. He worked at the Exploratorium, a museum of science and technology. He linked (联系) March 14th with and celebrated his first Pi Day with a pie party. Later, the celebration became a yearly tradition at the museum and more visitors joined in. In November 2019, Pi Day was designated (指定) as the International Day of Mathematics by UNESCO, an international organisation.

Have you ever done something that made you embarrassed(尴尬)? No one likes this feeling, but learning to deal with embarrassment can make you feel more confident.

What does embarrassment feel like?

Embarrassment makes you laugh, cry and want to hide under your bed forever. Falling over in a shop or calling your teacher "Mum" might feel like the end of the world, but everyone gets embarrassed sometimes. We all react(反应) differently, and what feels embarrassed to one person might be common for another. Childline, a charity for young people, says, "Whatever you're feeling embarrassed about, remember that it's natural."

Why do we feel embarrassed?

Scientists believe embarrassment is a way of teaching us not to repeat mistakes. You're more likely to feel embarrassed when you worry too much about what other people think of you. Even if you think everyone saw you with strawberry jam on your face, studies show that fewer people notice than you think.

How do we deal with embarrassment

If something isn't very serious, try making a joke out of it. "Laughter can show people(and yourself) that it isn't something to worry about," Childline says. If you are feeling embarrassed, other people may not have even noticed, so try acting like it's no big deal or take no notice of what happened. Sometimes we're embarrassed about the way we've behaved towards others. In that case, try saying how sorry you are and you regret what happened. "Telling someone can be a first step in moving on," says Childline.

When planning a vacation, many people consider the popular tourist sites they want to see. But that's not what my husband and I did when we planned our vacation to Japan. We thought about the kind of farm which we wanted to go.

Ours was far from a typical vacation. We were WWOOFing! WWOOF stands for World Wide Opportunities on Organic(有机的) Farms. The organization connects people interested in organic farming. WWOOFers help their hosts with daily activities. These include everything from picking vegetables to baking bread to feeding cows. Hosts provide WWOOFers with meals and places.

My husband and I felt like family when our host met us at the train station. She told us to call her Okasan—Mom, and her husband Otosan—Dad. Okasan and Otosan own Suwa farm, an organic vegetables farm that provides local people with fresh, healthy food. When no WWOOFers are around to help, the farm work is done by Okasan and Otosan.

As part of a family, we were able to enjoy the fruits of our labor(劳动) at every meal. Eating fresh vegetables three times a day and doing six hours of farm work certainly did our bodies good. Okasan and Otosan taught us to weed(除草) pick vegetables and clear rocks from fields. We also packed vegetables so they could be sold at the market.

WWOOFing is unlike anything I've ever done before. I can't wait to do it again. 

I was born in a poor community on the north of Boston,US.1 with a single mother who was always in poor health, I lived each day on food stamps (食 物券) and studied in a place that was called "the 2 public school area". Not many people expected much of me, so I had to expect something of 3 .

John's 10-year-old son Tony is quite smart and perfectly able to read. However, it seems to be a big challenge for him to keep on reading. In order to solve this problem, he sent an email to Mr. Dad, an educationist, and asks him for some advice on improving children's reading ability. Here's the reply.

Susan's strike got her kids' attention, course. But that was not all that happened. Word of the fed-up mother spread. Before long, a camera crew from a TV show came into their yard. Now people all across America were going to find who drove the kids' mother up a tree.

Singapore is a city of different cultures. Walking through the streets of Singapore, you can (听到) different languages spoken, such as English, Chinese and Malay. People from different cultures live and work peacefully with each other and (分享) their traditions.

In Singapore, cultural differences are shown in building styles, shops and in many other ways. Take food as an (例子), each culture has its own place to sell their traditional food, but there are also the (著名) Hawkers markets. Different foods are sold here in these (繁忙) markets. And these are very popular with Singapore citizens and (游客) from around the world. The food is good and very (便宜).

Singapore is also an interesting city. Large numbers of people, ideas, etc. are mixed together (在……下面) the same sky. English is used for business, (虽然) the official language here is Malay. Now, however, there is a strong Chinese business community and also a growing Indian business community. Singapore welcomes talented people from around the world and (希望) they will live there all their lives.

March is a great time to enjoy the unusual flowers of the butterbur(蜂斗菜). This plant isacross most of the UK and it likes places near rivers. Some people that butterbur is like a toilet brush. When the flowers open, they have white on them. Then the heart-shaped appear and they are huge, reaching up to one meter across. In the past, the butterbur had many uses. Its cool leaves treat headaches. 

Living on an island might sound wonderful. But what if you left for a trip and found you could never return? What if your home, and even the land it stood on, was gone forever? For people living in the Pacific Islands, this is really possible.

Why? Climate(气候) change. Climate change is causing the sea to rise. That's bad news for the Pacific Islands. Young people on the islands are even starting to wonder: Will they be the last generation(一代人)?

Not if the islanders have anything to do about it. These people are deeply connected to their homelands. The Pacific Islands are made up of 11 different countries: the Marshall Islands, Fiji, Samoa, and others. But now, those countries are working together. They're joining forces to fight climate change.

Why is climate change such a huge threat to this part of the world? Islands have low elevations(海拔). So they are among the first places influenced by rising sea levels. That's why countries of the Pacific Islands are working together to do their part.

But these are small countries. When it comes to climate change, can they make a big difference? They can, because most of the things that people on islands buy are brought by ships. This is very harmful to the environment. After all, ships put out almost 3 percent of the world's carbon emissions. That makes climate change worse.

Pacific Islanders realize the problem. So, in 2019, six countries got together: Fiji, the Marshall Islands, Samoa, Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands, and Tuvalu. They came up with a plan. They agreed to cut carbon emissions from shipping by 40 percent by 2030. And by 2050, they expect zero-carbon shipping.

How will they pull this off? They plan to use some really cool carbon-free technologies. They'll make use of solar and wind energy.

Sea levels are rising, but hopes aren't sinking in the Pacific Islands.

A lot of animals travel from one place to another. We call this migration.

In Africa, large animals, like elephants and zebras, migrate to find food and water. They usually follow the same ways every year.

A lot of birds migrate to find food and better weather, too. They are usually birds that eat insects. They spend the summer in northern Europe, because there are lots of insects there. In the winter there aren't any insects, so the birds fly south to southern Europe and Africa.

Some insects migrate, too. In North America, millions of monarch butterflies fly south to spend the winter in Mexico, California and Florida, where it's warmer. They travel 50—65km each day and they travel about 1,125km.

Some fish migrate to breed(繁殖). Salmon(鲑鱼) can swim over 20,000km in their life. They are born in rivers in Ireland, Scotland and other places in northern Europe. The young fish swim down the river to the sea and into the Atlantic Ocean. They live in the ocean until they are adults. Then they return to the river where they were born. They lay their eggs in the river and then they usually die. Salmon do this, because their eggs are safer in the river. Other fish can't eat them.

Arctic terns(北极燕鸥) travel the furthest when they migrate. They spend the summer in the Arctic, but when winter comes they fly to the Antarctic, because it's summer there. The next year they fly back to the Arctic again. In one year these small birds travel 36,000km from one end of the earth to the other and back again. Nobody knows how they do it. 

The silence of the pond(池塘) was broken by the first cry: "Found something!" A swimmer ducked (扎入) into the water with a lifeline connected to a boat. Soon, she appeared, holding a bright blue glass bottle. It was passed to another, then into the boat.

On a fine Sunday morning in May, a team of 10 women over 65 years old, known as the Old Women Against Underwater Rubbish (OWAUR), looked for rubbish across Nova Pond in Scotia.

When the team returned, they joked about the trip. "We didn't even know what it was," one swimmer said with a laugh, showing an electronic lighter they had found. "We had to ask a young person."

Part protection organization, part social club, OWAUR only accepted old women as its members. To improve the conditions of the ponds, the group made it its task to take rubbish away from them. The idea of this group was from a moment of Sandy , a retired(退休的) reporter. As a lifelong nature lover, she liked swimming in ponds. However, the world of the pond, which was a little polluted, made her worried. Then she came up with a slogan (标语):"OVER 65, IF YOU'RE HEALTHY ENOUGH, IS THE AGE OF ACTION."

Soon many people joined her. They found a sense of wonder at the pond cleanup moments. And their team could do a lot more than people might think.

When many people thanked OWAUR for what they had done, some questioned why they called themselves "old women". "You should call yourselves the Mermaids(美人鱼) Against Underwater Rubbish," they said.

Stephen Hawking, one of the world's most famous scientists,believed that humans will one day have to move into space. "Once we step into space, our future should be safe," he said.

③ Many people say it's too expensive. Also, most space trips are not short. A one-way trip to Mars, for example, would take at least six months. People traveling this kind of distance could face many health problems. Besides, these first people would find life especially difficult in space. On the moon's surface, for example, the sun's rays are very dangerous. People would have to stay indoors most of the time. 

④ No matter what different concerns there are, sending people into space seems certain. In the future, we might see cities on the moon or even new human cultures on other planets. First stop: the moon.

Avery and I are good friends, but once something unpleasant happened when we both tried for roles in Alice in Wonderland.
