Huang Xuhua, the chief designer of China's first-generation nuclear submarines, passed away at the age of 99 in Wuhan. His life was a story of dedication and hard work for China's defense technology.

Born in Guangdong in 1926, Huang grew up during war time. He studied shipbuilding at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and joined the Communist Party of China in 1949. In 1958, he was chosen to lead a secret project: designing China's first nuclear-powered submarine. At that time, China had no experience in this field, and foreign countries refused to share technology.

Huang and his team faced huge challenges. They collected information from newspapers and studied two American submarine models. Without computers, they used simple tools like abacuses and rulers. To avoid mistakes, three groups checked every calculation. Even when the project was paused (暂停) from 1962 to 1965 due to economic difficulties, Huang never gave up.

Finally, in 1970, China successfully built its first nuclear submarine, becoming the fifth country in the world to do so. Huang's name was kept secret until 1987 because the project was highly confidential. Even in his 90s, Huang worked daily to teach young engineers and share his knowledge. His first submarine is now displayed in a museum, and he received China's highest honor, the Medal of the Republic, in 2019.

On the other hand, bad stress can happen if the stress lasts too long. You may not feel well if a family member is ill, if you are having problems at school, or if anything else makes you unhappy every day That kind of stress isn't going to help you. And it can actually make you sick. 

The best way to fight the stress is to have a balanced life. Make sure you keep in mind: sleep, exercise, relaxation, and food. If you get enough sleep and eat healthily, and if you exercise and leave time to have fun, you will feel less stressed.

The Dragon Boat Festival falls on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese calendar every year.  this festival, there are many kinds of celebrations. People eat rice dumplings and watch dragon boat races. 

The dragon boat is long with a dragon head at the front and  (it) tail at the end. Those  (competitor) on the boat paddle (用桨划船) it as far as they can to the finish line. One team member sits at the front of the boat and beats a drum to encourage his team  (go) faster and win the race. 

The story behind the Dragon Boat Festival is about  Chinese famous poet (诗人), Qu Yuan. He worked for the king of Chu (楚国), but some people said terrible things about him, and the king became  (anger) with him. To avoid being killed, Qu Yuan left Chu and went to a village. While living there, he wrote many famous poems. 

In 278 BBC, Chu was conquered (攻克) by Qin. Qu Yuan was so sad for his homeland  he jumped into the Miluo River. The villagers paddled quickly out on the river  they could not find him. Then the local villagers threw rice dumplings into the river so that the fish would leave Qu Yuan's body alone. Thus the Miluo River  (know) for Qu Yuan. Later, eating rice dumplings and holding dragon boat races became  (wide) practiced traditions on the Dragon Boat Festival. 

World Letter Writing Day

September 1st is the perfect day to write a letter because it's World Letter Writing Day. The day  to keep the art of letter writing in our digital (电子) age. In the past, letter writing was the  means of long-distance communication. However, with modern communication like email and text messages, letter writing is less popular. Few people take the time to write letters. 

Even though new technologies  us with much faster ways to communicate these days, letter writing is still  for a number of reasons. First, writing a letter to someone shows them that you really care about them, because you take the time and effort to do something people seldom do nowadays. And we  think handwriting is an important skill you shouldn't lose, because writing by hand  typing can help your brain in a different way and improves your language processing and reading skills.  reason is that writing a letter makes you really think about what you're writing. Far too often, we quickly send texts and emails, but we don't think about  our words do to the person we're talking to. With a handwritten letter, you are made to be more careful with the words you choose. 

So, what can we do  this day? The best way is to write a letter to someone. It could be a  who lives miles away, or the friends that you have lost touch with over time.

The Torch (火把) Festival is one of the most important festivals for some ethnic (少数的) groups in China. 

During this festival, people get together in large numbers. They light torches and walk through the streets.  And they create a beautiful and warm scene. 

People dress up in their traditional and colorful clothes.  There are also many performances such as acrobatics (杂技), traditional sports competitions and so on. 

 Delicious dishes such as grilled (烤的) meat and special cakes are prepared. Families and friends come together to enjoy the big meal and share the good times. 

In a word, the Torch Festival shows the rich culture and traditions of some ethnic groups.  It is a festival full of love, togetherness and celebration. 

The Qingming Festival usually falls around April 5 each year. "Qingming" is the fifth solar term (节气) of a year, and it's the only solar term on the Chinese lunar calendar that is also an important traditional festival. For thousands of years, Chinese people carry out different customs to spend the festival. 

It's a festival in memory of the dead. That's why it's also known as Tomb-Sweeping Day. Traditionally, people show respect for their ancestors by visiting their tombs, they would also offer food and flowers to their ancestors. 

"Qingming" comes as temperatures begin to rise and rainfall increases. Therefore, there has been the tradition of planting trees during the festival. 

In China, willows (柳树) are considered magical, so during the festival, people wear soft willow branches and also place them on their front doors to drive away ghosts and evil spirits. 

Flying kites is also an important custom during the festival. In the past, people would cut the string to let a kite fly freely. It's believed that doing so brings good luck and even keeps people away from illnesses. 

No celebration is complete without delicious food. With this in mind, sweet green rice balls are a popular dish to eat during the festival. They are made of a mixture of glutinous rice powder (糯米粉) and green vegetable juice with something sweet in them. 

Ever since ancient times, Chinese people have had the custom of going for an outing during the festival. With the development of the society, the festival has become a popular tourism holiday for spring outings and flower viewing. 

This year, people across China enjoyed a three-day public holiday during the festival. Many people booked on the Internet before the holiday. Places such as Beijing, Chengdu, and Shanghai were among the top choices in bookings for the holiday. Tianshui in Gansu Province was also famous for spicy hotpot during the festival.
