Mr. Arthur Hale is a retired (退休的) primary school teacher from Vancouver, Canada. When he was young, he fell in love with reading. He always hoped to bring the joy of reading to more kids. In 2019, he found local kids had few storybooks at home. He decided to do something about it.
At first, he put 30 of his old books into a wooden box by his front gate. He wrote a sign: "Take a book, leave a book." The box became popular very fast. Neighbors started bringing their old books to fill the box.
After two years, Mr. Hale had a bigger plan. He wanted to bring such mini-libraries to more corners of the community. He learned that many local kids spent their after-school time alone on the streets with nothing fun to do. He wanted to change that.
With the help of the community, he built his first free street library in 2021. It was a small wooden house on a pole (杆子), full of picture books and storybooks for kids. He checked and filled it every weekend. More and more people joined him — they gave books, helped paint the libraries and even built new ones.
Now, Mr. Hale has helped set up 12 free street libraries around the city. "I was a teacher all my life, but these little libraries are my best class," he said with a big smile. "Sharing books brings so much happiness to both the kids and me. That's the secret of a happy life."

In 2026, some schools carry out activities on Social Practice Day to help students grow in a healthy and all-round way. Meanwhile, they cut down written homework to help students better balance their study and life.
In recent years, a local survey shows some problems among students because of the increasing homework. Firstly, a large number of students sleep for less than 8 hours. Secondly, they have little time for sports, so their health is getting worse. What's worse, more students wear glasses and they also feel unhappy.
Nowadays, many schools make some differences. For example, in a primary school, students prefer to do outdoor activities to indoor ones. They like jogging and playing basketball. Teachers in some primary schools encourage students to do hand-made things. They teach them to make 3D models, English picture books and so on. In a middle school, students go to an Old People's Home once a month. They chat with the old people and clean their rooms. Schools also hold more outdoor activities for students.
Teachers say that Social Practice Day is more than just a one-day event. It is a chance for students to improve their life skills. In my opinion, Social Practice Day connects learning with life. A balance between study and rest is very important.
(1)、Why do some schools have activities on Social Practice Day?(2)、How long do many students sleep with the increasing homework?(3)、Do students in a primary school like outdoor activities or indoor activities?(4)、How often do the middle school students go to the Old People's Home?(5)、What does the writer think of the Social Practice Day? -
