How Do Muscles Make You Move?

Muscles can do two things—they can contract (收缩) and relax. A muscle gets shorter and thicker when it contracts. When the muscle relaxes, it gets longer and thinner.

Muscles make us move by working together in pairs. For example, the upper part of your arm has a biceps muscle (肱二头肌) and a triceps muscle (肱三头肌). This pair of muscles works together when you bend (弯曲) your arm at the elbow. As your arm bends, two things happen—the biceps muscle contracts and the triceps muscle relaxes. As you unbend your arm, the triceps muscle contracts and the biceps muscle relaxes.

How Do You Control Your Muscles?

When you want to move in a certain way, your brain sends signals (信号) to the muscles you need to use. When you want to bend your arm at the elbow, your brain sends out two signals. One signal goes to the biceps muscle and tells it to contract. Another signal goes to the triceps muscle and tells it to relax. Both muscles work together to make you bend your arm.

1. Hanfu

The Hanfu (Han clothing) dates back to over 4,000 years ago. It became the national clothing at the Han Dynasty. It also had a far-reaching influence on neighboring Asian countries, such as Korea, Japan, and Vietnam. Nowadays, people seldom wear Hanfu except on special situations, such as festivals and wedding ceremonies.

Hanfu clothing includes:

2. Qipao

Since the Qing Dynasty, Qipao has mainly developed into Beijing styles, Shanghai styles and Hong Kong styles. Beijing's Qipao style is more traditional than the other two and the colors are much brighter. Shanghai-style Qipao is more business-like and forward-looking. It shows the latest fashion. More Western ideas are used in the designs and colors. Hong-Kong-style Qipao is influenced greatly by European fashions.

3. Tang Suit

Tang suit actually only dates back to the Qing Dynasty (1644—1911). As the Tang Dynasty was famous for being powerful, foreigners called the overseas Chinese people "the Tang people" and the clothes they wore were called "Tang suits". Traditional Tang suits usually have Chinese characters on them to express good luck or best wishes. Nowadays, Tang suits have become a kind of formal dress worn on some special situations, such as Chinese New Year or wedding ceremonies.

4. The Zhongshan Suit

The Zhongshan suit is a type of men's jacket. Dr Sun Zhongshan made it more popular. The design of Zhongshan suits mixes traditional Chinese and Western clothing styles. Zhongshan suits have four big pockets on the front, two up and two down. There are five central buttons on the front and three smaller buttons on each sleeve. Zhongshan suits can be worn on formal and daily situations.

Each spring brings a new blossom of wildflowers along the highway I travel daily to work.

Have you heard that many of the migrating (迁徙) animals are in danger? A report has found that one fifth of the world's migrating animals are at risk of dying out. They often move from place to place because they might be looking for food, better weather, or a friend. This includes big animals like whales and elephants, and small animals like turtles, fish, and birds.

The report was by the United Nations (UN), a group of 193 countries that work together on problems facing people. The recent report looked at the health of these protected animals and found that the number of them is getting smaller, and some of them are at risk of disappearing forever.

Migrating animals face many dangers, because they often move from one place to another. For example, more than 1.5 million wildebeest (a wild African animal) travel through Tanzania and Kenya to follow the rain each year, crossing rivers where hungry Nile crocodiles (鳄鱼) live. However, the biggest danger to migrating animals is people, such as hunting, fishing and building things that destroy their homes.

It's hard to protect migrating animals because of how far they travel. Monarch butterflies travel 3,000 miles every autumn from north-eastern North America to Mexico. But the report suggests that countries create safe areas of land to help animals. It also suggests that governments do more to fix climate (气候) change, as well as noise, light and plastic pollution.

The report showed projects that have helped migrating animals. In the South Atlantic ocean, rules that stopped the hunting of humpback whales (座头鲸) helped make their numbers go from 450 in the 1950s to more than 25,000 today. Inger Andersen from the UN Environment Programme said, "There is hope. Humans can still do even more to protect migrating animals."

Your eyes help you see and make sense of the world. They work hard every day, with reading, doing homework, watching television and playing sports. A report by Eye Health UK says eyesight can even influence how you feel: 76% of people with poor eyesight in the survey said it had influenced their mental health. Eyes have been called "windows to the soul". For example, when you're happy, your eyes might look big and shiny. When you're down, they might look dark and sad. By this way, they help humans understand and connect with other people.

As the fifth of seven children, I went to the same school as my three elder sisters and brothers. And each of us joined an old school tradition—the plant sale held in early May, just in time for Mother's Day.
