In the middle of the Karakum Desert, there's a 230-foot-wide hole and it's on fire. 

In 1971, a group of Soviet petroleum geologists went across the Karakum Desert to look for petroleum.  When they found a place that they thought had oil, they set up a drilling rig. 

Unfortunately, it was over a big natural gas cavern.   When they drilled, the whole thing collapsed, taking the rig. Even worse, methane gas, which is dangerous and explosive, was leaking from the hole. So the Soviet geologists set the hole on fire. 

The scientists thought it would burn for a few weeks or months and then stop. However, it has been burning for over 50 years. 

The locals call it the gates of hell or the door to hell. More scientifically, it's the DarvazaGas Crater. 

In 2009, the Turkmen president wanted it closed. But that didn't happen. In fact, it's become a tourist site. The tourism minister says it's a major attraction. 

For a country with only 10, 000 to 15, 000 tourists a year, it's important that people want to go to the gates of hell. 

 It's also said that the crater attracts local spiders. They come to the edge because of the light and heat and throw themselves in. 

The crater has been burning for over 50 years and no one knows when it will stop. But with tourists interested, it might keep burning for a while. 

Spring rolls(春卷) are a Chinese dish that may seem simple and easy to make, but this delicious dish has a  history. This special dish dates back to ancient China around the Tang Dynasty. At that time, spring rolls were popular food served mainly during the of the Spring Festival. Nowadays, spring rolls are part of Asian food, and there are several of spring rolls. The different kinds  on the country and the ingredients used. Spring rolls are very delicious fried food  has become very popular around the world. These days, they can be found on the menu of many Asian restaurants. 

Spring rolls can be with any ingredient you like.  , some of the most popular ones in restaurants are tofu, vegetables, bamboo shoots, chicken, cheese and ham. These ingredients are common and delicious and easy to buy. Traditionally, spring rolls are part of the Chinese New Year. Spring rolls have the special symbolism(象征意义) on these days. Eating spring rolls  the Spring Festival means that spring is coming and the new year will start. In other words, eating spring rolls  the meaning of welcoming the New Year. Spring rolls are  served at the Tomb-Sweeping Day. 

It's hard to spend enough time on both lessons and after-class activities. But I wanted to make it. I knew this would be difficult, but I didn't realize it until my classes in the high school (begin). I got on well with other girls. After school, I often had ice cream with(they) instead of doing homework. I always finished it the next day between(class). As a result, I got worse grades. I realized that I needed (find)some balance. So I made a timetable to divide my time between studying and relaxing. It was good idea but I was only able to follow it for a few days because it made me under too much pressure. 

Later, I took another plan. Each week I (careful) listed everything I had to do. Then I made another list of things that I could (do) if I had time. It worked really well. Ever since then, I(not miss) any important things. At the same time, Ienjoyed my spare time. Planning time has never been easy for me, I still keep on trying. I'm glad that I've learned to balance things and it will be (help) in my future life.

Every spring, thousands of fish swim through Utrecht, a city in the Netherlands, to find a place to lay their eggs. In this process, they help eat insects and keep the waterways clean. However, there is one problem. 

 They have to wait at the Weerdsluis lock(水闸), which is usually closed at this time of year. 

After knowing that, local ecologist Mark vanHeukelum decided to help the fish. He learned that the lock keeper didn't know when there were fish waiting at the lock. Mark set up an underwater camera at the lock and connected it to a computer and an online doorbell. When someone sees fish waiting to pass, they press the doorbell and the lock keeper will open the lock to let the fish through. 

But Mark couldn't keep watching the doorbell day and night.  He reached out to the public to see how many people would like to lend a hand. He was surprised. In its first spring, the Fish Doorbell was rung more than 100, 000 times by people all around the world. 

This spring, people's interest didn't seem to wane.  On the website, the number of visitors was always over 100 and could go as high as 500, depending on the time of day. Politely holding a door open for the friends of humans in the water is a feel-good act of kindness. 

Some people are thinking of ways to automate the doorbell. But Mark holds a different view:" I hope when spring comes, people will be excited to ring the doorbell again. "

In  of the bad weather, they still went for a picnic. 

Life is full of surprises and you never know how things will turn out. John Gurdon is a good example of this. As a boy, he was told that he was hopeless at science and was at the bottom of his class. Later, aged 79, the very same Gurdon shared the 2012 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Japanese stem cell researcher Shinya Yamanaka. 

Like so many scientists, Gurdon shows us where the power of curiosity and perseverance can lead to. 

At the age of 15 in 1948, Gurdon ranked last out of the 250 boys at his high school in biology. Gurdon's high school science teacher even said that his dream of becoming a scientist was" quite ridiculous". 

In spite of his teacher's criticisms, Gurdon followed his curiosity and kept working hard. He went to the lab earlier and left later than anyone else. He experienced thousands of failures. 

 "My own belief is that we will, in the end, understand everything about how cells actually work, " Gurdon said. In the 1960s, Gurdon took a cell from an adult frog and moved its genetic information into an egg cell. The egg cell then grew into a clone of the adult frog. This technique later helped to create the sheep Dolly in 1996, the first cloned mammal in the world. 

In 2006, Gurdon's work was developed by Yamanaka to show that a sample of a person's skin can be used to create stem cells. Using the technique, doctors can repair a patient's heart after a heart attack. 

"Luck favors the prepared mind, " Gurdon told the Nobel Prize Organization. "Ninety percent of the time things don't work, but when they do, you have to seize the chance. "
