As we all know, "No pain, no gain". That's a perfect saying for Lai Shixiong, an excellent English learner from China, to describe his experience of learning English well. 

Like many speakers who are not from English-speaking countries, Lai failed when he first started learning English. When he was in high school, he once got a very low mark of 7 in an English test. The full mark was 100. He almost gave up English but after he entered a military school (军校), he met a classmate who was good at English. 

Lai was surprised by his classmate's great spoken English, so he decided to start learning English from the beginning. As he wrote down his experience in the diary, "I saw myself as a baby who had just started to learn a language. " To correct his pronunciation, Lai listened to records and practiced phonetic symbols (音标) hundreds of times every day. Then he was able to pronounce words, Lai said he began to practice conversations. Not being able to find someone to practice with, Lai created a learning atmosphere (氛围) on his own. "I just talked to myself as if I were in a conversation, " he said. 

Lai also thought of ways to improve his skills. He used English to describe everything he saw. He even translated (翻译) speeches when he went to class meetings at the military school. He also read and listened to English news to learn new expressions. 

"There is no other way to learn a language well. You have to practice, " Lai said. 

Chinese may seem a little hard to learn, but with the right methods, you can make it easier. Here is some useful advice for you. 

To start with, listen carefully in class. Your Chinese teacher explains important knowledge and skills. If you miss them, it's hard to catch up. Take  (note), even simple ones. It plays an important part in  (remind) you of the key points in class. 

Then, practice writing every day. Learning to write Chinese characters is like playing  sport. You need to practice it often to write them well. Write a few characters every day instead of writing a lot at once. If you face problems and can't deal with them by  (you), don't worry. Turn to your teacher or classmates  (immediate). 

Understand the meaning of the characters instead of just memorizing them. Many students can write the characters but don't know their meanings. Try to know why a character is written in this way. If you can use pictures or stories to help, you'll remember them  (fast). 

Stay positive when learning Chinese. You may sometimes find it difficult.  (repeat) the wrong characters and sentences can help you learn better. Be confident  yourself and celebrate every small progress you make. 

With these steps, you'll find Chinese  (much) interesting and easier to learn. It's not always simple, but keep trying, and you  (improve) your Chinese soon. 

Zhang Yu is an eighth-grade student from Xinzhou, Shanxi. When she first learned English, she faced many difficulties. She couldn't speak English well and always  new words quickly. Listening was also a challenge for her. 

At first, she felt really  and wanted to give up (放弃). But Zhang Yu loved English deeply and also knew the  of the language. She was sure that English could help her see a bigger world and connect with people from different countries. So she decided to work harder at it. Every morning, she got up 20 minutes earlier than before  English books aloud. She also used an English app to help improve her spoken English. When she met new words, she didn't just learn  by heart—she wrote sentences with the new words in her notebook. To improve her listening, she watched short English  in her free time. Once, she couldn't understand a conversation in a video. She watched it five times and  got the main idea. When she had problems she couldn't  alone, she always raised her hand in class or went to the teacher's office after class to ask for help. 

Slowly but surely, Zhang Yu's English skills improved a lot. Now her English is much  than before. 

Zhang Yu's wish is to learn English well. As for her dream, she wants to be a tour guide in the future. She  foreign tourists around her hometown and let more people know about the wonderful culture of Xinzhou. 

International Workers' Day and career-themed radio shows are both great for young people to learn about work and life. Here are five ways to make the most of them:  

. On International Workers' Day, join local celebrations—parades, spring festivals, or community activities. You can talk to workers from different jobs and ask about their daily work. This helps you get real-life job information.  

. Listen to career radio shows like "Career Stories". Pay attention to the guests' experiences, especially the lessons they learnt from difficult jobs. Take notes on useful ideas for your own career.  

. After listening to a show or talking to workers, discuss what you learnt with parents or teachers. They can share their own career stories and give you advice based on your interests.  

. Use the phonetics you practiced (e. g. , /sk/ in "skill", /sm/ in "smart") to read the show's scripts aloud. This improves your pronunciation and helps you remember key words about jobs and festivals.  

. Write down your thoughts about future jobs—what you want to try, what skills you need, and how International Workers' Day made you think about work. This helps you organize your ideas for career planning. 

How to improve your English pronunciation? It's a common problem for many English learners. Here are some simple and useful tips for you. 

Tip 1: Listen to English as much as possible. You can listen to English news, English songs, English movies or English programs. Try to listen to the correct pronunciation and imitate it. 

Tip 2: Read English aloud every day. When you read, pay attention to your mouth and tongue movement. You can read English texts, poems or stories. Reading aloud can help you practice your pronunciation and intonation. 

Tip 3: Use a mirror. When you speak English, look at yourself in the mirror. You can see how your mouth moves and correct your bad pronunciation habits. 

Tip 4: Practice with a partner. Find a classmate or a friend who also wants to improve pronunciation. Talk with each other in English and correct each other's mistakes. 

Pronunciation is very important for English learning. Good pronunciation can help you communicate with others better. Just keep practicing these tips, and your pronunciation will get better and better. 

How to Use Learning Strategies

Everyone wants to be a better learner. Here are two useful strategies from top students, which are also the key points of this lesson. 

First, sequencing events. When learning history, we can use time order words like "in 1990", "then" and "finally" to put historical events in sequence. For example, when learning about Lu Xun's life (from our textbook), we can arrange his experiences: born in 1881 → went to study in Japan → gave up medicine and took up writing → returned to China. This helps us remember events clearly, just like the sequencing activity in our textbook. 

Second, making connections. When reading a text about learning difficulties, we should connect it with our own experiences. If the text talks about "being under great pressure before exams" (like Xuanxuan in our textbook), think about how you dealt with pressure. Did you talk to your parents? Or did you listen to music? Making connections makes the text more meaningful and helps us understand it better. 

Besides these two strategies, we can also learn from other students: take notes carefully, search for information online when meeting problems (like Bowen), and review what we have learned regularly. All these strategies can help us become better learners. 

In September, Chengdu No. 1 Middle School in Sichuan held a special activity. Teachers asked students to share the stories of their family heirlooms (传家宝). Over 300 students took part in it, bringing their heirlooms to school and telling the stories behind them. 

One of the students, 14-year-old Song Zhengchen, shared his family's heirloom—a cassette player. His grandmother bought the player in the 1980s to listen to the news. Later, his mother used it to play music tapes. When Song was younger, his mother would often play old poems for him on the player. 

"Today, we have many new advanced music players. But we still keep it because it holds beautiful memories of my family, " Song said. 

Another student, Xiao Yao, also 14, won first prize in the activity. Her heirlooms were some food coupons (粮票) from her grandmother. These coupons were used during a time when food was scarce. In the past, families could only buy a limited amount of food each month, and even rice required a food coupon. Xiao was amazed when her grandmother told her stories about this difficult time. "My grandma wants me to be thankful for what we have today and to work hard for a better future, " Xiao explained. 

The heirloom stories shared by the students reflect the rich history and beautiful memories of their families. These items connect them to the past and remind them of the hardships their ancestors faced. Through these stories, we hope the students will carry on good family traditions, appreciate (欣赏) their family history, and continue to work hard for their future. By remembering the past, they can help build a better tomorrow for themselves, their families, and the country.

To make our city greener and raise students' awareness of environmental protection, our school will organize a tree-planting activity. Here are the details:

Time:On Saturday, March 16th. We will gather at the school gate at 8:00 a. m. and leave for the City Central Park by school bus. The activity will end at 12:00 p. m. 

Participants(参与者): All students in Grade Eight. Each class should be led by their head teacher. 

Things to prepare: 

1. Wear the school uniform and sports shoes (It will be convenient for digging holes). 

2. Bring a small bottle of water and some snacks. 

3. The school will provide saplings, shovels and gloves, so you don't need to prepare them.

For one thing, science fiction gives us a chance to imagine what our future will be like. Some people think there will be flying cars and robot servants. Others believe we will learn more about aliens and other planets.

Another reason is that sci-fi writers and their work can inspire us to create the future. In 1945, a sci-fi author named Arthur C. Clarke wrote about a series(系列) of space stations in his books. In the books he predicted the earth of the future would have many TV stations and people would send TV programmes around the world.However, this was before TV was common at home! Now you see, we have realized all of these!

Science fiction is also popular because it can make us think about our world in new ways. It can help us better understand the real world. It can also make us excited when we feel like we are living in a boring world.

Beauty went to live with the Beast. The Beast was nice to her and she enjoyed living with the Beast. One day,Beauty found the Beast couldn't open his eyes or talk. Beauty cried. Her tears(眼泪) dropped onto the Beast.The Beast turned into a handsome young man. Beauty and the young man lived happily ever after.
