In November 2024, through discussions and agreement among APEC member economies, China successfully won the bid to host the 33rd APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in 2026. This will be the third time for China to host the meeting, after 2001 and 2014. In October 2025, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and South Korean President Lee Jae-myung expressed their support for China hosting the meeting. On October 31, 2025, at the APEC CEO Summit handover ceremony in Gyeongju, South Korea, the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade took over the hosting of the 2026 APEC CEO Summit. Shenzhen was chosen as the host city because it is a pilot zone for China's reform and opening-up and an important platform for its win-win opening-up strategy. From December 11 to 12, 2025, the 2026 APEC Informal Senior Officials' Meeting was held in Shenzhen. This was the first event hosted by China as the host economy. China plans to showcase the achievements of its open economy during the meeting and deepen regional cooperation in the Asia-Pacific.

On December 12, 2025, at the 2026 APEC Informal Senior Officials' Meeting in Shenzhen, China proposed "Building an Asia-Pacific Community for Shared Prosperity" as the theme for the APEC "China Year."  It also identified "openness, innovation, and cooperation" as the three priority areas for the APEC "China Year."

Hainan, China's southernmost island known for its sunny beaches, will start a new stage called "island-wide independent customs operation"" on December 18, 2025. Though the name sounds formal, it does not mean being cut off from others. Instead, Hainan will turn into a special customs area with more open rules. It will act as an important bridge linking China with the world market.

The key of this change is based on three rules:

This change will bring real benefits. For Hainan locals, imported daily things will become cheaper. For tourists, the yearly 10,000-yuan shopping limit stays the same. And more kinds of goods will be added, like petfood and musical tools. Foreign visitors will also enter more easily.

For businesses, setting up in Hainan will cost less. This is because of good policies, such as a lower 15%company income tax for qualified firms.

Hainan's growth as a special zone is an important part of China's plan to open up more to the world. Sitingbetween China and Southeast Asia, Hainan is ready to become a key center for trade and tourism. This move will not only create new jobs and better services on the island but also shows China's wish to work closely with the global community.
