The United Nations (UN) has six Language Days every year. These days celebrate the UN's official languages: Arabic(阿拉伯语). Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish. The UN treats all languages in the same way to show each matters.

Each language has its own special day. French speakers celebrate their language on March 20. Chinese Day is on April 20 because of an old Chinese story which tells how an ancient person named Cang Jie created Chinese characters. English Day is celebrated on April 23. This date is also shared by Spanish Day. Russian Day is on June6while Arabic Day is on December 18.

On these days, UN offices worldwide hold events. People join workshops, readings of stories and poems,and cultural shows with music and dance. These events are joyful and full of sharing. People enjoy learning and connecting with others. UN staff and locals join together.

These events show the UN values all languages and cultures. People at the events learn about different lifestyles through fun activities. Young people come to make friends from other countries and try new languages.They might learn basic phrases or practice speaking with native speakers. This builds understanding between cultures and makes sure all UN languages are treated fairly. These celebrations help create a friendlier and more peaceful world. Every language is important there.

Lucy is a foreign student studying in Guangdong. During the May Day holiday, she hoped to feel local. She once worried about cultural differences  China and her country.

Scientists from the University of Florida (UF) have recently reported on the world's largest place for fresh water turtles to lay eggs. They counted about 41,000 Giant South American River Turtles there. Just as importantly, they developed a more exact method of counting the turtles.

Scientists from the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) use drones(无人机) to photograph turtles from above. These pictures are made into large maps called orthomosaics(正射影像图), which provide a fuller view of the local turtle population.

Later, UF researcher Ismael Brack met with WCS scientists. They marked the shells of 1,187 turtles with paint. They then flew a drone over the area four times a day for 12 days. On each trip the drone took 1,500pictures. The researchers used computers to create orthomosaics from these pictures. Next, the scientists carefully studied how many marked turtles were visible in these pictures. Using this information, the researchers created a special math model to help them recognize and count more exactly how many turtles were really using the sandbank.

The results were surprising. People counting on the ground counted about 16,000 turtles. Simply counting turtles in the orthomosaics without using the math model gave a much bigger number —— about 79,000. But the math model showed that the real number was about 41,000.

Dr. Brack points out that having an exact count of the turtles is important for protecting them. Without it,it's difficult to know if the number is going up or down. The team plans to keep working to improve the method.They believe the method can be used to count other kinds of animals, too.

China is trying its best to use clean natural energy (能源) to protect the environment. Although some clean energy technologies are still expensive, China continues to develop  to meet people's needs.

For example, wind energy is  used. We can see tall wind turbines on grasslands, mountains and even on the sea. Wind energy is one of the  energy sources (来源). People have found that wind power works better in open areas.

Another  is solar energy. Solar panels (太阳能电池板) wind turbines are placed on mountains, open lands and building roofs. They take in sunlight and turn light energy into electric power. Solar energy works easily  sunny days. When the weather is fine, it can provide enough electricity for a whole house.

Water energy is also used in many places. China has  many large dams (水坝) on big rivers. The water falls down from high places and  fast, driving the machines to make electricity. Water power is friendly to nature and dams can serve people for many .

Besides, tidal (潮汐的) energy is another way to make electricity. The sea has rising and falling tides every day. When the tides move, we use their force to  energy.
