Huang Xuhua, widely known as the father of China's nuclear submarine(核 潜 艇 ), died at 99 on February 6, 2025. Born in Guangdong in 1926, he experienced foreign aggression(侵略) in his childhood, which inspired him to study hard and use his knowledge to make the country stronger.

In the 1950s, China started to develop nuclear submarines, a tough task because of limited technology and resources. However, Huang and his team were not afraid. They took on this challenge. To keep the project secret, they didn't contact the outside world, not even their families.

During the design of the nuclear submarine, they met many difficulties. For example, designing a nuclear reactor(核 反 应 堆 ) was really hard. They couldn't get help from foreign experts, so they had to do research independently. They used simple tools like abacuses(算盘) and slide-rules(滑尺) to calculate and do experiments carefully. At last, in the 1970s, China's first nuclear submarine was built and tested successfully. China became one of the countries that could make nuclear submarines. Huang Xuhua didn't stop. He kept working on improving submarine-making technology. Because of his hard work, he won many honors. In 2019, he got the "Medal of the Republic".

Now, when we think of him, we know his life can inspire us. We, especially the young people, should learn from his spirit. Let's take on the responsibility, face challenges bravely and work hard to make China stronger. In this way, his spirit will live on.

China is making big efforts to help people control their weight and live healthier lives. The government has started a three-year "Weight Management Year" plan from 2024 to 2027 to fight against obesity(肥 胖 ). Obesity can cause serious health problems like diabetes and heart disease. Here's what you should know about the new guidelines.

 First, it's important to check your BMI (Body Mass Index). For adults, a healthy BMI is between 18.5 and 24. If your BMI is between 24 and 28, you are overweight. A BMI of 28 or more means you are obese. Also, doctors suggest measuring(测量) your waist. Men should keep their waist under 90 cm, and women under 85 cm.

 For exercise, try to do 150-300 minutes of activities like walking, cycling, or dancing every week, and do strength exercises twice a week. If you sit for a long time while studying, stand up and stretch for 3-5 minutes every hour.

 Besides diet and exercise, small daily habits can also make a big difference. Teens should sleep 7 hours every night because bad sleep can make you gain weight. Try to eat vegetables first, then meat, and finally rice or bread during a meal to control how much you eat.
 Remember, losing weight isn't about being perfect — just start with small changes, like drinking water instead of soda or taking the stairs instead of the elevator. With these easy steps, everyone can have a healthier future.

On July 27, 2024, the "Beijing Central Axis" (中轴线) was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List (世界遗产名录) , becoming China's  (fifty-nine) World Heritage Site. It shows buildings and archaeological sites (考古遗址)  form Beijing's old city. 

Spreading 7. 8 kilometers north-south through Beijing, it has the Bell and Drum Towers at its  (north) end and Yongdingmen Gate at the southern end. Along it, you'll find old palaces, gardens, governing buildings,  national ceremonial buildings. There are also  (road) that are part of the central axis. 

According to Lyu Zhou, director of Tsinghua University, this city planning goes back to Kaogongji. Written before 221 BC, the book  (describe) city design like "court in the front, market in the back" in ancient China. Such design was similar the Forbidden City and the markets near the Bell and Drum Towers. 

The building of the Beijing Central Axis began in the 13th century and  (complete) in the 16th century. It has continued to be worked on over the past seven centuries and still influences Beijing's  (develop) today. 

"The Beijing Central Axis is  great example of traditional Chinese ideas of balance and peace, " Lyu said. "It is a symbol of national order and it shows the creativity of the Chinese cultural tradition. "

Lying on London's famous Millennium Bridge, British artist Ben Wilson paints on a piece of dried gum (口香糖). It has been crushed flat (压扁的) into the ground. 

"The important thing is, the gum is below the metal ground, " said Wilson. "The beauty of it is that they' re all different shapes and sizes, " he continued, describing pieces of gum. Wilson sees possibility in things most people avoid looking at. The dried gum is a chance to turn a piece of waste into something beautiful. 

The artwork is also a way to surprise walkers. "It gets people to take a closer look at the ground and discover a hidden world, " Wilson said. 

Back in his north London art room, Wilson creates paintings on the surface of a small mosaic tile (马赛克瓷砖). These tiles will be part of a collection on London's underground train walls. The images are more personal than the gum works, according to Wilson. 

Wilson was born in London to artist parents. He remembers working with clay from the age of three. He had his first art show when he was around 10 or 11 years old. After that, his interest turned to waste, also called trash. He has painted gum and other pieces of trash for 20 years. 

The dried gum surface creates a space where Wilson says he can paint without harming public objects. Government officers have cleaned off much of the artist's public street art. But the hundreds of gum paintings on Millennium Bridge still remain for all to see. 

Do you want to be an astronaut in the future? Every year on April 24, it's Space Day of China.  The successful manned space missions are a big part of it.

 When astronauts go to space, they face many challenges. In space, there is very little gravity, which can make their bodies feel different. They also have to spend a long time away from their families and friends in a small spaceship. And if something goes wrong during their mission, they have to figure out how to fix it quickly while under a lot of pressure. That's why astronauts have to be really smart, strong, and ready for anything before they can go to space.

To make sure astronauts from China are well-prepared for their missions, they go through lots of training. Huang Weifen, who helps design the astronaut program, says there are over 200 different things astronauts have to learn, including science, physical training, and practice missions. 

One of the hardest parts of astronaut training is the underwater exercises.  Astronauts wear diving suits that weigh more than 100 kilograms and stay underwater for six hours at a time. Moving around in the water with such a heavy suit is really tiring. Huang said that one astronaut, Nie Haisheng, even lost 2 kilograms after one underwater training exercise.

Riding a bicycle is not only a fun activity but also excellent exercise. While millions of people ride bicycles worldwide, far fewer try unicycles. What exactly is a unicycle? The "uni" U—N—I in unicycle means "one". So a unicycle has only one wheel! Invented in the 19th century, unicycles require balance (平衡) and practice, but once you learn, the feeling of riding on one wheel is exciting. 

When learning to ride a unicycle, start in a safe, open area. To get on the unicycle, use a wall or someone's hand for balance. Step onto one pedal (脚踏板) while keeping the other foot on the ground. Push off gently, straighten your body, and focus your eyes ahead—not downward—to keep your balance. Beginners often take 10—20 hours of practice to ride smoothly, unlike bicycles, which most people learn in just a few hours. 

Many people think only professional performers ride unicycles. But unicycle riding is also a sport. According to the International Unicycling Federation, over 150,000 people worldwide take part in unicycle sports. For example, "mountain unicycling" lets riders travel around wild places with greater challenges. However, this activity can be dangerous. Wearing a helmet (头盔) , knee pads, and wrist guards is necessary. 

Unicycling isn't just risky—it's healthy too! It improves core strength, and burns about 400 calories (卡路里) an hour. Also, it offers a special way to enjoy nature. Imagine riding through a forest, feeling the wind in your hair, and hearing birds sing—all while balancing on a single wheel!

You may find this email surprising, but knitting sweaters for penguins is a real act of kindness. 

The Penguin Foundation and Phillip Island Nature Parks in Australia came up with the idea. The activity began because of a serious oil spill (泄漏) near Phillip Island in the 1990s. During that time, the number and health of baby penguins had a serious drop. When little penguins were covered in oil, their lives were put in danger. 

To solve this problem, the organization asked people from all over the world to knit sweaters for penguins. These sweaters could keep them warm during the cleaning process and stop them from eating the oil. 

Luckily, the idea worked. In 2001, there was another oil spill near Phillip Island. This time, the sweaters helped save 96 percent of the penguins in the area. 

However, some bird protection groups have questioned if these sweaters might put more stress on penguins. In answer to this, the organization said that the sweaters are only used for a short time. Once the penguins are better, they no longer wear them. 

When Kirk Alexander went missing for 11 days, an 1 hero came to his help: his neighborhood pizza shop. Almost every night for more than ten years, Alexander 2 a late dinner from the nearby Domino's pizza shop. He never had a 3 order. Sometimes he would call for a salad, sometimes a pie, and sometimes chicken wings. The only sure thing for the staff was that they would see Alexander's name 4 on their online ordering site between 11 p. m. and midnight several times a week. Until 5 , for nearly two weeks at the end of April 2016, they didn't.
