Bristlecone Pine

Bristlecone pine is one of the oldest living plants on Earth. These ancient trees grow in cold and dry high mountains. They grow very slowly and look twisted（扭曲的）and simple. However，they have super strong energy and spirit. Many of them can live for more than 4，000 years. They can stand strong wind，cold weather and dry environment，and live through hundreds of hard seasons. 

Nature is full of wonders. These three plants show how clever they are to live in the wild. They may look strange，but each has its own special way to survive.

You may have heard of the story of Nüwa fixing the sky. But have you ever thought why she needed to do so? According to Liezi, an ancient Chinese philosophical work, the reason was a fight between the two gods—Gonggong (共工) and Zhuanxu (颛顼). Gonggong is a water god. He once fought with Zhuanxu because he wanted to change the water policy to help irrigation (灌溉). However, he was about to lose. Gonggong got so angry that he used his head to break Mount Buzhou (不周山).

The mountain was very important because it held up the sky in the northwest. When it broke, many things in nature changed. The sky leaned (倾斜) down toward the northwest, bringing disasters to people. Nüwa felt sorry for them, so she used stones to fix the sky.

Mount Buzhou appears in many Chinese stories. It first appeared in The Classic of Mountains and Seas(《山海经》): "Beyond the northwest sea, in the farthest corner of the wilderness, there is a broken mountain called ‘Buzhou' (meaning unclosed)". The text tells us where it is and why it's called Buzhou. Other stories describe the place as cold and snowy, making it very difficult for people to get there.

Today, the stories are still popular. People can see Mount Buzhou in poems, games and popular fantasy dramas (仙侠剧). It also shows people's hope to learn about the unknown world and adds a mysterious touch to these stories.

The app uses artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze (分析) cats' and dogs' facial expressions.  It can show the five most common feelings—happy, angry, neutral (中性), sad and scared.

 The key technology that they use in the app is facial recognition, a common use of AI. We can access our mobile phones or enter train stations with facial recognition readers. But this is the first time that the tech has been used with animals.

The app's AI was first taught to recognize pictures of animals. Then, it was trained to recognize the facial features (特征) of cats and dogs.  For example, if a dog tightens up its eyes and mouth while changing the position of its ears, this means the dog is scared. To master this skill, the AI program "saw" and "read" thousands of example images.

 The researchers are confident in the app because it has been tested many times. Interestingly, they found that cats are harder to understand than dogs. In the future, the app might also be able to analyze a pet's body to make its results more reliable (可靠的).
