A group of comics called "Tiny Eyes" go popular on the Internet. With these comics, Chinese artist Cao Siyu shares the differences between Chinese culture and Western culture.

Cao Siyu comes from Beijing. She spent the last 10 years in France, the UK and the USA. "Many foreign people that I met were interested in China." She explained. "But most of their ideas about China are out of date. I hope I can change the image of China in foreigners' mind." That is why Cao Siyu put her idea of "Tiny Eyes" comics into practice.

By bringing words and images together, the Chinese artist tells stories in a simple yet powerful way. She shares Chinese people's daily life and compares how differently people act in the same situation.

In one comic, for example, she compared French cutlery (餐具) with Chinese one: While French people use eight different forks and knives for a meal, Chinese people can make it with only a pair of chopsticks. And in another comic, Cao Siyu made it clear how people from different cultures express love. She wrote below the comic, "Chinese people are not used to saying ‘I love you, Mum'. Instead, they show their love in actions."

Cao Siyu provides a new way for foreigners to know her motherland, and her works have gathered about 20 thousand fans on the Internet. "People from one culture may not be able to fully understand another. But we can listen to each other." she said.

With smart technologies changing our lives, how can traditional puppet shows (布偶戏) survive? In Fujian Province, young volunteers decided  (organize) digital protection projects in 2022.  (they) goal is clear: this intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) should  (save) through 3D scanning and AI.

Being  volunteer for cultural projects isn't easy. It requires both tech skills and artistic understanding. Many find it harder than expected, because some elderly artists rejected to use digital tools at the beginning. However, the team kept communicating with them  (patient). "The key  success is respecting tradition while innovating," said Lin Yue, a 24-year-old leader.

They  (raise) over 500,000 yuan through online donation since 2023.

Part of the funds goes to helping artists who feel  (loneliness) in modern society. Recently, a livestream (直播) attracted one million  (view), proving that traditional arts can shine in new forms.

The project also focuses on community service. It's difficult to protect cultural roots from a young age,  young volunteers still worked hard to teach children how to make puppets in villages. As one villager said, "These young people bring not only technology but also hope."

A comic book is a book made up of a series of pictures. The art and words are called "comic", but that doesn't always mean "funny". Sometimes the comics are more serious.

Rodolphe Topffer was a teacher, but he also developed several comic strips which were published in different places in 1827. These were all drawn carefully by hand. Topffer wrote in horizontal (水平的) blocks in his own handwriting. This became the standard(标准). 

 Here, artists loved the idea and developed the technique of using travel (穿行) in their comics, which were always popular. The French also took part in comic strips, while there were still others who stuck to single comics that were going down the page in the book—instead of horizontal blocks. 

Comics started to become popular in the 20th century. Comic strip artists have often used art to "make fun" of very serious subjects (话题). Even when they were not "making fun", they used comics and characters to deal with serious topics. 

Comic books continue to be popular, but over time, many of their characters have also been pictured in television shows and in movies.

To many people, art is a human expression of creativity. But in recent years, you may have read news about AI creating its own art. Some people worry that AI might replace artists someday.

However, this worry seems to be unnecessary, at least for now. Many artists today are turning AI into a useful tool. Instead of replacing artists, AI is bringing artists more possibilities.

A piece of music created by AI attracted people's attention. AI was used to turn the novel corona virus into a piece of music based on its protein structure (蛋白质结构): The project was led by Markus Buehler, an American musician.

Except for creating imaginative works, AI can also do some easy work for artists again and again. For example, in the comic and animation industries, there are now AI tools that can automatically (自动地) color in black-and-white line drawings.

"Although the results require a little clean-up, it could give artists time to experiment, by cutting down the time it takes to color each drawing." said a famous animator.

As Peter Ward wrote for The Culture Trip, art of every kind has always been influenced by technological (技术的) development. AI can become a useful tool to bring change to the art world if people don't fear it and try to welcome it.

What else can AI do?

AI can learn different music styles by analyzing (分析) audio data. It uses this data to create music ranging from pop to jazz and more.

AI can learn different styles of paintings. For example, it can learn paintings of impressionism, and then-recreate paintings in the same style.

AI can be trained with past text to find trends and write or translate articles and poems. It also can help collect data and facts for news writing.
