At 67 years old, Xu Shuangmin shocked everyone by deciding to travel 4,000 km northwest to begin a new chapter(篇章) in her life as a volunteer teacher.

In September 2021, Xu joined a pilot program about the silver-age teacher action launched by the Ministry of Education. The purpose of this program was to use the rich experience and knowledge of retired teachers to improve the education of universities in western China. After retiring from Zhongnan University of Economics and Law, Xu began volunteering at China University of Petroleum-Beijing at Karamay in Xinjiang.

Most of the retired teachers come from the developed large cities. And the dry climate, sandy weather and simple living conditions in Xinjiang are very challenging. But Xu has just one request: to cook in her room, as she loves light meals and doesn't like the strong-flavored local dishes.

Although they are volunteers, these teachers work energetically. Take Zhong Dakang, who is in his sixties, as an example. He was a teacher from China University of Petroleum, Beijing. He often works overtime, spending the whole day in front of his computer and sometimes forgetting to take his blood pressure medicine.

Chen Xiaohe is a retired teacher from the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. Having difficulty in walking due to a car accident, he still enjoys teaching in front of a class. Chen even stays at the Karamay campus during the winter and summer vacations, preparing lessons and teaching materials. And he has extended(延长) his one-year volunteer time to three years. The praise he receives from students may be why he decides to stay longer. The course he teaches is often praised for being clear and easy to understand.

Jo is a girl whose favorite thing is writing novels. At first, few people noticed her novel. Jo thought she must do something for it. She sent it to three publishers. Luckily, it was accepted by one publisher on condition that she would cut one third of it down, including the parts which she admired. As the novel was important for her, she decided to ask her family members for advice.

"Don't change your book, for the idea is well worked out. Let it wait," her father advised.

"Jo will get more by trying," said her mother. "Criticism(批评) is the best test of such work, for it will show her both advantages and disadvantages and help her to do better next time."

"Yes," said Jo. "I really don't know whether it's good or bad. It' ll be helpful to have knowledgeable persons to take a look at it, and tell me what they think of it."

"Do as the publisher told you. He knows what will sell, and we don't. Make a good, popular book, and get as much money as you can. And you will get aname," said Amy.

"I hope to see it printed soon," Beth smiled when saying it.

Finally, Jo decided to cut out her novel and print it. She got 300 dollars and also got plenty of praise and blame. Yet it was hard for her to accept bad comments(评论). But she thought it did her good, for those whose opinions had real value gave her the criticism which is an author's best education. Jo said she wouldn't be defeated(打败). Instead, she became braver to continue doing her favorite things.

Luk thung is a popular kind of music in Thailand. It comes from the countryside of Bangkok and people often call it"Thai country music". You can now hear it in many places in Thailand.

Luk thung appeared in the early 20th century for the first time and later spread across the country. One of the most famous luk thung musicians was Suraphol Sombatcharoen. He helped to make luk thung spread across the country. He wrote more than 100 songs! He was so famous that many people still remember him today.

Thai migrant workers also helped to spread luk thung across Thailand. They usually left the countryside to work in the cities. These workers didn't leave everything behind though. They brought luk thung with them! As a result, many luk thung performers were from the countryside, and many of their songs were about countryside people living in the city.

Luk thung has changed over time. At first, luk thung was slow, and it was also quiet. Many luk thung songs showed people's feelings. Now, luk thung shows are exciting. Luk thung performers wear colourful clothes, and they even dance. Also, they play luk thung with different instruments.

When we talk, we often make hand movements. They (call) body language. We usually do not even notice them. However, our hand movements play  important role in helping us learn and remember!

Australian scientists have come up with a clever way to study hard-to-reach areas of the sea floor: They attached(固定) cameras to sea lions.

Australian sea lions are endangered. Their numbers have dropped by over 60% in the last 40 years.Scientists wanted to learn more about how sea lions get food in different areas of the sea floor.

Most sea floor areas are difficult for humans or robots to reach. But sea lions can cover large areas of the sea floor quickly, and go deeply to places humans can't reach. Then the idea came.

Scientists chose eight healthy female sea lions. To feed their babies on the beach, they would certainly return to the land. Scientists put the female sea lions to sleep and attached a camera and a GPS tracker(追踪器) to each of them. Before long, they woke up and headed out to the sea.

Over the next few days, the eight sea lions traveled 560 kilometers underwater, going as deep as 110meters below the surface. In all, they collected 89 hours of video.

After the cameras were back, scientists saw exactly what the animals had seen. The video showed what food sea lions like and how mother sea lions teach their kids to hunt.

The video also recorded the sea floor areas that had never been seen before. Scientists were able to learn about six kinds of sea floor environments where sea plants and animals live. Thanks to the sea lions, scientists now have a better understanding of these endangered animals and the sea floor.

In Kunshan, a city in Jiangsu Province, "AI police" have made a big difference to public safety. They help catch criminals and solve crimes quickly. The Kunshan Public Security Bureau (公安局) has a special team called the "Kunpeng Team" or "AI Team".

The local police chose 35 officers to start a high-quality innovation(创新) center in May. Using 10 years of data, the"AI Team" created over 220 intelligent models to fight crimes, keep the public safe, and improve community services.

He Yongliang, an officer from the team, talked about that the"AI police" can notice suspicious activities right away, give warnings, and help in many ways. He also explained how the"AI police" are great at stopping telecommunications fraud(电信诈骗). With the help of the Suzhou Public Security Bureau, the"AI police" work to analyze fraud cases, which makes them work more efficiently(高效地).

Once, a local police station received a report about a fraud where someone lost 980,000 yuan. The"AITeam" analysis center got the owner's statement and, in just 10 minutes, the AI police stopped 500,000 yuan from being lost. Nine criminals were caught within three days, and 200,000 yuan was returned to the owner.Before, it would have taken a team of five or six officers two weeks to solve the fraud case.

All in all, the"AI police" in Kunshan are making the city safer and more efficient by using AI to fight crime and protect its people.

Last weekend, my dad asked me to garden with him in the backyard. I wasn't too excited about it, as I'd rather be playing video games indoors. But Dad insisted(坚持), so we gathered outside with seeds and gardening tools.

We started by planting seeds. Dad handed me  some sun flower seeds and a small shovel (铲子). "Plant. "Plant them about an inch deep," he said. I followed along, feeling the soil between my fingers, and soon we had a row of seeds waiting to sprout(发芽).

Days passed, and nothing seemed to happen. I was about to lose hope, thinking the seeds were just a waste. But then, a gentle reminder came, "Be patient. Good things take time." A week later, tiny green shoots came out of the soil. I was amazed and ran to show everyone.

As the sunflowers grew taller, Dad taught me how to take good care of them. "Just like these plants, you also need care and love to grow," he said. I began to understand how my parents support and care for me behind my growth.

One stormy night, the tallest sunflower broke. I felt very upset. Sitting beside me, a comforting voice said, "Sometimes, even the strongest can fall. But remember, they can still bloom, just a bit lower to the ground."

That day, I was encouraged to be patient and resilient(有韧性的). The sunflowers taught me that growth isn't always easy. Sometimes, we need to bend and just be strong when facing every challenge.
