Did you know that trees can"talk" with each other? It may look like each tree in a forest stands alone.But they' re connected underground by networks made of fungi(真菌).

Between 80% to 90% of trees are part of these networks. Earlier studies show that trees use networks to warn others about danger. For example, when bugs come to eat the leaves of a tree, the tree sends chemical signals(信号) through the networks. Other trees then receive the messages and make special juices to keep away from the bugs.

However, a new study led by the UK's University of Oxford says something different. After running tests on math models, scientists found that trees do not actually get anything from being nice to each other. This is because trees fight for sunlight, water and food all the time. So, it's illogical(不合逻辑的) for a tree to help others when it is in trouble.

So why are there still signals? Some scientists believe trees are born to send messages, just like we can't stop our faces from turning red. Some think the fungi may be the ones sending the signals because they can't live without trees providing energy for them. Another possible answer is that trees may be sending false warnings. The trees around will use their own energy to make juice. This way, the signaling trees can save energy to grow taller. Aren't they tricky?

When you go out for a walk or a jog, how often do you see litter along the road? Maybe a plastic bottle,some food wrappers, an empty drink can or some cigarette butts(烟蒂)?

Of course, all of this litter is bad for the environment. Well, a new sport called"plogging"is getting popular with people. Plogging connects the word"jogging" with"plocka upp", which means"pick up" in Swedish.

The word plogging was created by the Swedish runner Erik Ahlstrom, who was unhappy with the litter he saw every time he went for a run. He also created the Plogga website to call on people everywhere to take up plogging and hold plogging events.

Stockholm, where Ahlstrom lives, became the first city to organize a plogging event in 2016.The World Plogging Championship has been held every year in Italy since 2021. In 2024, over 80 ploggers from 13 countries took part in the event and collected over 1,200 kilograms of trash.

 And it's also good for your health because you' re running and pick up litter. According to research, plogging burns more calories(卡路里) than jogging on its own.

 But you can pick up litter while doing all kinds of sports. The Plogga website recommends doing it while cycling, skateboarding, or even just walking, whatever way you choose to get outside and move.

Huang Xuhua, a famous scientist in China, passed away at the age of 99 on February 6th, 2025, in Wuhan, due to . Huang was  as the pioneer of making China's first nuclear submarines(核潜艇) and had received many high honors.

Huang stuck to  China's first nuclear submarines, the Type 091 and Type 0911, from the1950s to the 1980s. For 30 years, his work had been a secret. In 1970, he and his team successfully completed China's first nuclear submarine, and it performed  than the first US nuclear submarine in 1954.

Huang was born in Guangdong Province in 1926. He studied shipbuilding at National Chiao Tung University from 1945 to 1949. Later, he became one of the first scientists to work on China's nuclear submarine program. In 1958, because of his excellent skills and qualities, Huang was called to Beijing. For the next 30 years, he worked hard on China's nuclear submarine program. He and his team started from nothing and  many difficulties to build the country's first nuclear submarine.

Huang's life was full of. From 2017 to 2020, he was awarded national-level honors three times by President Xi Jinping. In 2019, he was awarded the Medal of the Republic, and in 2020, he got the National  Science and Technology Award in China for 2019.

Huang cared a lot about the future of science and technology in China, as well as the of young people. He donated over 20 million yuan of his money to support scientific research, education, and the spread of scientific knowledge. He spent his whole life developing China's nuclear submarine industry and national safety, which  us to try our best to make the country stronger.

"If you feel like sleeping more in winter, you are not alone," said Dr.Smith. To support himself, he mentioned a study that found at least a third of American adults sleep more in winter.

So do people need to hibernate like some animals on cold days? Another study done at a hospital in Berlin may help you find out the answer. 188 patients in the study slept about an hour longer in winter, with30 more minutes of rapid eye movement(REM). REM is a period of sleep where we dream more and our breathing speeds up. "REM helps us remember things and stay happy, and keeps us healthy," said Dasgupta. 

The need for more sleep in winter may have to do with how light fluctuates. "Our bodies use sunlight to set our sleep clocks. When it's bright outside, we are usually active. But when the sun goes down, we may feel tired," Dasgupta said. "Less sunlight on cold days causes an increase in melatonin(褪黑素) produced by our bodies, which makes us feel sleepy." Because of more production of melatonin, people naturally think a healthy person needs more sleep in winter.

However, that doesn't mean humans really need hibernation. "We just need to have a better rest from busy social work in winter, by getting more sunlight in the morning and going to bed and waking up at the same time every day," said another researcher, Dr. Carleara Weiss.

Different countries have different customs and cultures. Every culture around the world has different customs and ways of communication. When you learn a language,you learn more than words.

In China, people are used to saying"sorry" to show that they regret doing something wrong. But it's very proud of American people to have polite manners towards one another in public. They often use the word"sorry"—— even when they don't really mean it! Usually, if they want to ask a stranger for the time, they will start by saying"Sorry to trouble you." If they're five minutes late for the appointment, they will greet the person by saying"Sorry, I'm late!" It's quite different in China. They use the word"sorry" in so many different situations that the meaning of the word has changed a little over time. The two main dictionary definitions(定义) of"sorry" are:①feeling sad for someone else because of their problems or bad luck;②feeling regretful because you' ve done something wrong. 

So what does"sorry" really mean? And why do western people use it so much? Well, in western culture, saying"sorry" is a way to be polite. It's also a very clever way to get what they want. If you want to borrow something from others, you'd better say"sorry" to them about something. Or it's hard for you to get what you want. So maybe saying"sorry" is not only just being polite, but also a good method to get what you want!

One morning, there was a loud knock at John Swift's door. The servant opened the door, and a man outside handed her a fine duck that had just been killed. "A present for Mr. Swift," he said. "It's from Mr.Boyle." Then, 1 another word, he turned and walked away.

A 15-year-old boy discovered a dating mistake on an ancient mirror. Xu Weizhe, a 15-year-old student from Chengdu, visited the Sichuan Museum in March 2025. When he got there, he  find that the museum had wrongly dated a thousand-year-old bronze burial mirror.

After his visit, he posted a video online where he  the mirror's beautiful craftsmanship(工艺) and smooth patina(铜锈). This finding made him think that the mirror was from the Western Han Dynasty  the Northern and Southern Dynasties. After reporting the mistake in person, the museum called Xu right away to thank him.

However, some people doubted whether Xu could truly have such knowledge. , Xu has been a collector of antiques(古董) since childhood. Much of his knowledge comes from hands-on experience rather than textbooks. He carefully studies every piece he buys. Some say  is not for every pocket, but in Xu's experience, old and interesting pieces don't have to cost a lot. Through antiques, we seem to travel through time, talking with our ancestors.

Walter was always sitting in the same chair when I came to visit. He would look up and smile when he saw me and pat the chair next to him for me to sit down. He loved to tell me about his lost golden years when he was an excellent baseball player. I was a good listener. After a couple of hours of talking, I would shake his hands and say goodbye to him. I hoped that I brought a little sunshine into Walter's life.

I met Walter when I was a high school student participating in a volunteer program with elderly people in a nursing home. It was the first of many such activities, ranging from playing with disabled children to sitting with cancer patients in a hospital. These activities seemed to satisfy my desire to be useful and to feel a meaningful connection to the life of others.

My parents inculcated me with a belief that there was no greater human value than kindness, and encouraged me to make helping others and contributing to society important goals in life. Volunteer work provided a way of attempting to realize the truth of these messages.

I learned that volunteerism is not a one-way act of helping someone less fortunate. Involvement in the life of another person has enriched my life as well. Seeing how people deal with the challenges of their lives has taught me valuable lessons in courage and dignity. Many of the people whom I have met as a volunteer are an unforgettable part of my life. Perhaps I received far more than I ever gave.

This is why volunteerism works—— each of us has so much need for human connection and so much to give to others.

Colors make the world more beautiful and our life more interesting. However, not everyone can see colors normally. Some people are suffering from(患……病) color blindness. They always mistake one color for the other when it comes to certain pairs of colors, such as red and green, or blue and yellow. It can bring them many challenges in doing everyday things that are very simple to normal people. Here are some examples.

Picking the right food can be difficult when different foods look like each other, such as broccoli and cauliflower. Also, people with color blindness will find it hard to choose fruits, like deciding between red and green apples. These difficulties may lead to a bad-tasting dish. But, in fact, cooking meat can be dangerous. If one can't tell the difference between raw(生的) meat and well-cooked meat, the result may be badly harmful to health. 

Color blind people have no exact idea what color their clothes are. And it's nearly impossible for them to choose one color that looks good with another quickly. They may need to put labels (标签) on their clothes to remind them of the colors.

Color blindness brings trouble to students during classes, especially in the early years, when many courses have something to do with colors. Moreover, adults will find they are the wrong people for many jobs, and that they don't have the chance to do something. For example, in many countries, color blind people aren't even allowed to drive.

There hasn't been any good way to solve this eye problem completely till now, but color blind people can wear special glasses to weaken the problem in daily life. The most important thing is that their needs should be cared for and met by society.

Self-discipline (自律) is the ability to push yourself forward and take action, no matter how you're feeling, physically or emotionally. It is a basic life skill that determines success, well-being, and happiness. 

•Choose a goal.

Begin by choosing just one goal that you want to achieve to develop your self-discipline. For example,perhaps you want to start exercising every evening. You could even practice self-discipline on very small goals such as reading a book for an hour without checking your messages.

•Find your motivation(动力).

Once you've chosen a goal, list the reasons why you want to achieve it. Instead of saying"Iwant to get this task off my to-do list", say"I want to do this task so that I can achieve my goals and feel satisfied with myself!" When you list the positive reasons why you want to achieve something, you'll find it much easier to get the job done.

•Face the difficulties.

Now you need to know the difficulties that you'll likely face when working toward your goal. Imagine that your goal is to read one book a week to improve your reading skills.  For example, when you find a book you like, it's hard to find time each day to read. You may get distracted by things around you while you're reading. Once you've known the difficulties, come up with some methods to overcome each one.

• Note your progress.

 You might feel free, happy, proud, and energetic. Also, think about keeping a diary to write down your self-discipline goal and to note your progress. This strengthens the positive changes that you've had in your life, and gives you a record that you can look back on to see the progress that you've made.
