Traditional Chinese painting(guohua) is a traditional Chinese painting form. It is usually painted on silk or paper using a brush with black ink or coloured paint. The  can be divided into characters, landscapes, and flowers and birds.

There are two  skills in Chinese painting. One is gongbi, drawing details in fine strokes(笔画) and rich colours. It's often used to draw people or animals. The other is xieyi, drawing in rough(粗的)strokes and light colours. with gongbi, xieyi pays more attention to expressing the artist's feelings. Xieyi is often used in landscape paintings. 

From the Han Dynasty to the Tang Dynasty, artists painted many detailed and beautiful pictures of the emperor's family. By the Sui and Tang dynasties, landscape painting had already built itself as a(n) form of expression. These paintings were less detailed and allowed artists to  express their understanding of the subjects.

The time from the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms to the Northern Song Dynasty is known as the "Golden Age of Chinese Landscape Painting". Using bold strokes and black lines, artists showed wave-like hills, rivers and stones. During the Song Dynasty, artists began  poetry and calligraphy (书法) to their works to express their thoughts and feelings.

Colour printing skills  during the Ming Dynasty, which marked a great milestone. This made it possible  illustrated(有插图的) books on the skills of Chinese painting.

Western art had a(n) on China in the late 1800s and 1900s. Some painters, after studying , returned to their homeland and joined the best of both cultures in their art.

Artificial intelligence(AI) can help us make phone calls, guide us to the places where we want to go, and play games with us. Now, AI can do even more things.

Researchers from Microsoft have created the first machine translation system that can translate news articles from Chinese to English, Business Standard reported.

According to Microsoft's official website, researchers tested the system by asking it to translate hundreds of sentences taken from news stories. Then, language experts compared the results to two translations that were done by humans. The experts concluded that the system's translations were as good as the human translations.

Machine translation is always challenging. This is partly because different words can be used to express the same meaning. It can be hard to say which word is more"correct". To improve the system' s translation abilities, experts used several methods. "Much of our research is inspired by how we humans do things," the lead researcher Liu Tieyan said.

One method is called dual learning(对偶学习). In this method, the system translates every sentence from Chinese to English, as well as translates the sentences back from English to Chinese. This way, the system can improve itself and learn from its own mistakes. This is similar to what humans do to make sure 

their translations are accurate (准确的).

Another method makes use of deliberation networks (推敲网络). The researchers taught the system to repeat the process of translating the same sentence over and over. Gradually, the system can improve the quality of its translations. This is similar to how people revise their own writing, that is to say, to make better word choices by going through it again and again.

It's important to teach your children good manners. Teaching good manners should begin long before they know how to walk or talk. In life, you have to set a good example to them.

But how do we teach them good manners? There is a good book, How to Behave and Why. It is written by Munro Leaf. I read it with my first grade students and we love the book. It tells good manners that every child should know. The words in the book are not difficult. There are also pictures in it. They make the book easy to understand.

Also, you can teach your children in life. Before they're going to school or a friend's house, tell them the importance of good manners. In your family, you can make a list of family manners. This helps children learn good manners anytime. And you can also have a manners competition. It makes learning manners more interesting.

What are good manners for children? At school, they should respect teachers and other classmates. They shouldn't be noisy in class. And they should say "hello" or "goodbye" to teachers and classmates, and "thank you" when they get help from others. When children are at table, good table manners are important, too. For example, teach your children not to talk with their mouths full. Tell them that old people should eat first. Teach your children not to be late for classes, parties, meetings and so on.

Did you know that trees can"talk" with each other? It may look like each tree in a forest stands alone.But they' re connected underground by networks made of fungi(真菌).

Between 80% to 90% of trees are part of these networks. Earlier studies show that trees use networks to warn others about danger. For example, when bugs come to eat the leaves of a tree, the tree sends chemical signals(信号) through the networks. Other trees then receive the messages and make special juices to keep away from the bugs.

However, a new study led by the UK's University of Oxford says something different. After running tests on math models, scientists found that trees do not actually get anything from being nice to each other. This is because trees fight for sunlight, water and food all the time. So, it's illogical(不合逻辑的) for a tree to help others when it is in trouble.

So why are there still signals? Some scientists believe trees are born to send messages, just like we can't stop our faces from turning red. Some think the fungi may be the ones sending the signals because they can't live without trees providing energy for them. Another possible answer is that trees may be sending false warnings. The trees around will use their own energy to make juice. This way, the signaling trees can save energy to grow taller. Aren't they tricky?

When you go out for a walk or a jog, how often do you see litter along the road? Maybe a plastic bottle,some food wrappers, an empty drink can or some cigarette butts(烟蒂)?

Of course, all of this litter is bad for the environment. Well, a new sport called"plogging"is getting popular with people. Plogging connects the word"jogging" with"plocka upp", which means"pick up" in Swedish.

The word plogging was created by the Swedish runner Erik Ahlstrom, who was unhappy with the litter he saw every time he went for a run. He also created the Plogga website to call on people everywhere to take up plogging and hold plogging events.

Stockholm, where Ahlstrom lives, became the first city to organize a plogging event in 2016.The World Plogging Championship has been held every year in Italy since 2021. In 2024, over 80 ploggers from 13 countries took part in the event and collected over 1,200 kilograms of trash.

 And it's also good for your health because you' re running and pick up litter. According to research, plogging burns more calories(卡路里) than jogging on its own.

 But you can pick up litter while doing all kinds of sports. The Plogga website recommends doing it while cycling, skateboarding, or even just walking, whatever way you choose to get outside and move.

Huang Xuhua, a famous scientist in China, passed away at the age of 99 on February 6th, 2025, in Wuhan, due to . Huang was  as the pioneer of making China's first nuclear submarines(核潜艇) and had received many high honors.

Huang stuck to  China's first nuclear submarines, the Type 091 and Type 0911, from the1950s to the 1980s. For 30 years, his work had been a secret. In 1970, he and his team successfully completed China's first nuclear submarine, and it performed  than the first US nuclear submarine in 1954.

Huang was born in Guangdong Province in 1926. He studied shipbuilding at National Chiao Tung University from 1945 to 1949. Later, he became one of the first scientists to work on China's nuclear submarine program. In 1958, because of his excellent skills and qualities, Huang was called to Beijing. For the next 30 years, he worked hard on China's nuclear submarine program. He and his team started from nothing and  many difficulties to build the country's first nuclear submarine.

Huang's life was full of. From 2017 to 2020, he was awarded national-level honors three times by President Xi Jinping. In 2019, he was awarded the Medal of the Republic, and in 2020, he got the National  Science and Technology Award in China for 2019.

Huang cared a lot about the future of science and technology in China, as well as the of young people. He donated over 20 million yuan of his money to support scientific research, education, and the spread of scientific knowledge. He spent his whole life developing China's nuclear submarine industry and national safety, which  us to try our best to make the country stronger.

"If you feel like sleeping more in winter, you are not alone," said Dr.Smith. To support himself, he mentioned a study that found at least a third of American adults sleep more in winter.

So do people need to hibernate like some animals on cold days? Another study done at a hospital in Berlin may help you find out the answer. 188 patients in the study slept about an hour longer in winter, with30 more minutes of rapid eye movement(REM). REM is a period of sleep where we dream more and our breathing speeds up. "REM helps us remember things and stay happy, and keeps us healthy," said Dasgupta. 

The need for more sleep in winter may have to do with how light fluctuates. "Our bodies use sunlight to set our sleep clocks. When it's bright outside, we are usually active. But when the sun goes down, we may feel tired," Dasgupta said. "Less sunlight on cold days causes an increase in melatonin(褪黑素) produced by our bodies, which makes us feel sleepy." Because of more production of melatonin, people naturally think a healthy person needs more sleep in winter.

However, that doesn't mean humans really need hibernation. "We just need to have a better rest from busy social work in winter, by getting more sunlight in the morning and going to bed and waking up at the same time every day," said another researcher, Dr. Carleara Weiss.
