Cutting the Grass

A charity in the UK is asking people not to cut down the grass in their garden. When spring arrives, many gardeners mow (修剪) their lawns. The activity is part of a project called "No Mow May". It helps flowers grow wild and insects breed. The purpose of No Mow May is to keep the nature in balance. It is from the charity Plantlife. The charity is also asking people to count the types and number of wild flowers in their garden. Plantlife considers that leaving the grass uncut creates habitats (栖息地) which will help "bees, butterflies, wildlife and us". Bees are a basic part of nature as they spread flowers. Cutting the grass means there are fewer flowers for bees and other insects to live on. 

A spokesperson for Plantlife said garden lawns have the possibilities to be "biodiversity hotspots". Last year, the charity found over 250 kinds of plants on people's lawns. These included wild strawberries and wild eggplants. Plantlife wants people to value wild lawns more. It said people would get a nice, colorful surprise if they did not cut their grass. One gardener spoke to the BBC about the joy of wild gardens. He said people care too much about having a clean garden and use too much compost. He believes not mowing the lawn lets people reconnect with the natural world. Plantlife agreed. It said a wild garden makes you have more fun instead of your own garden. 

Two years ago, my family moved into our dream house—a very big home  seven rooms. It was a beautiful place, but as we grew up, our feeling of togetherness began to disappear  (slow). In the big house, we sometimes seemed  (be) strangers to each other.

Hosting a second-hand sale is a great way to raise money for charity.  Here are some useful tips. 

·Choose the date and place.  Think about hosting it in a busy area, such as a popular park or an open space near a shopping center. Call the venue manager (场地管理人员) to make sure that a charity sale is allowed. 

 Invite friends, family and neighbors to donate items they no longer need. 

·Organize and price the items. Separate them into a few groups, like clothing, shoes, toys, books, etc. Do some research (调查) online and at local second-hand stores to see how similar items are priced.  Put a price tag on each item. 

·Prepare other things.  Also, make banners (横幅) or signs to help direct people to the sale.

·Promote (促进) the sale. Spread the word by using social media (社交媒体) and handing out leaflets. 

The population aging (老龄化) has become a serious problem in many countries in the world. How to take good care of the elderly becomes a big problem. The care homes in London come up with an amazing way to stop old people feeling lonely—giving them hens to look after. 

The project is started by a local charity to reduce loneliness and improve happiness among the elderly. It's also used to help patients with dementia, a serious illness of the mind. Workers in care homes have reported a reduction in the use of medicine where hens are in use. 

Among those taking part in the project is 80-year-old Ruth Xavier. She said, "I used to keep hens when I was young and had to prepare their breakfast each morning before I went to school. I'm enjoying the creative activity, and it feels great to have done something useful." 

Wendy Wilson, a care manager at 60 Penfold Street, was one of the first to take up the project. She said, "People really welcome the idea of the project. We are looking forward to the advantages and fun the project can bring for people here." 

Lynn Lewis, the director of Notting Hill Pathways, said, "We are happy to take part in the project. It will really help bring our people together through a common interest and creative activities." 

There are now 700 old people looking after hens in 20 care homes in the northeast. And now the charity is working hard to raise money for the project across the country.
