Imagine this: You jump into a car on a weekend morning, and it takes you wherever you want to go. When it drops you off, it heads home on its own, so you don't need to worry about parking. That's what self-driving cars can do.

A self-driving car is also called a driver-less car. It senses its environment and operates without human involvement(参与 ). Depending on the level of driving automation(自动化), these cars require different degrees of human involvement. At higher levels, a human passenger may not need to take control or even be in the vehicle at all. However, at lower levels, human involvement might still be necessary.An autonomous vehicle isn't some simple small tool."It' s system, a collection of inventions applied(应用) in a novel way," reported Wired magazine.

Developing self-driving cars takes a lot of time and resources, but the advantages are promising. For example, automation could markedly reduce road accidents, as according to research in the United States, 94% of accidents are caused by the drivers'own operational mistakes.

Self-driving cars can also help even more, like the people with disabilities. More importantly, they can help reduce energy use and air pollution by less traffic jams and unnecessary operations.

Many well-known companies worldwide, such as Baidu and Tesla, have entered the self-driving car industry. According to Wired, autonomous technology could add$ 7 trillion(万亿)(more than 49 trillion yuan) and save hundreds of thousands of lives in the near future. Research from Goldman Sachs, a famous bank, suggests that self-driving cars will make up 10 percent of new vehicle sales by 2030.

Plains wanderers(领鹑) are small, rare birds that live in grasslands. Unlike most birds, female plains wanderers are larger and stronger than males. Females take the lead in protecting their nests and babies from animals like foxes, while males often sit on the eggs  to  keep  them  warm.  These  birds  are  hard  to  find because their feathers blend into the grass, making them look like part of the landscape. Sadly, their numbers have been  dropping  because  people  are  taking  over  their grassland homes for farms and cities.

To save them, scientists are using AI. The key is the birds' calls. Mother wanderers make soft sounds to talk to their chicks and warn about danger. These calls are quiet and easy to miss, but AI can hear them clearly. Scientists put microphones in the grasslands to record sounds all day and night. Then they put these recordings into a computer program.  The AIlearns to tell the wanderers' calls apart from other noises, like the wind blowing or insects chirping. This helps scientists find where the mother birds are and how many chicks they have.

"AI helps us monitor these birds without bothering them," says Dr. Lee, who leads the project."We can find the most important areas for them and work to protect those places." Once, the AI helped scientists find a hidden nest with three baby birds.Without AI, they might not have found it. Thanks to this technology, there is new hope for these rare birds, showing that AI can be a powerful tool in saving wildlife.

In a video online, fish-shaped lanterns move in the air as if they are swimming in the water. A group of teenagers in Shenzhen Yangang Middle School brought life to the fish lanterns with built-in AI system.

"The fish-lantern dance is a long-standing tradition in Shenzhen. Dancers carry lanterns and try to make them move like real fish in their performance, and this calls for lots of practice," says Jiang Jiahan, one of the lantern's inventors. So his team wants to lower_the_threshold with an AI-driven fish lantern that can move on its own,so that more people can take part in the traditional performance art.

Tan Wenbo, another inventor, explains that a sensor(传感器) on the head of a lantern will identify(识别) different pictures on the screen and give the result to a circuit board(电路板). The board, connected with two small motors(发动机) on the lantern's head and tail, will drive the paper fish to perform different moves.According to Jiang, the rules of the moves follow the habits of real fish. "If a fish sees its food, it may dance more often in excitement. If it finds a good place to hide among, it feels relaxed and will move lower."

"The old lantern model was made of card paper, but it weighed too much," Jiang says. Then he made the latest lanterns with xuan paper (a classic paper used forChinese painting) and iron wiring(接线).

Jiang says this experience makes him want to learn more about AI in the future.So does Tan.

Times change! When I heard that the Bright Bookstore was closing, I was sad.The bookstore had been in the neighborhood for 50 years, and it was a great place where people could connect with each other through their 1 of books.

When I met Zhang, the store's owner, he told me it was difficult to run a traditional bookstore. Most young people preferred reading e-books or reading 2 . Childhood memories came back to me so 3 . A group of us often went to the bookstore. We looked at the new books and 4 hours reading there. Tim encouraged us to share our ideas by writing them on a large board.

A few months later, I was back and was 5 to see that the Bright Bookstore was still open for business. It seemed as old as before, but inside it was like a different world. In an area, a book reading was going on. Nearby, some readers were sharing their ideas on a screen 6 the large board. Some were reading on computers. It even had a coffee shop 7 nice food. Clearly, the Bright Bookstore was in good, creative hands.

Zhang told me that there were more community events in the coffee shop such as book readings and even concerts and movie nights. The bookstore was turned into a place where the book lovers got together and shared ideas and 8 .

"Well, as you can see, technology and creativity have brought my old bookstore into the 21st century! I'm so glad to see that 9 I wanted for the community is still here," said Zhang.

No matter how times 10 , there are always people who love reading. With the development of technology, traditional bookstores should also change in a creative way.
