Jiang Zhaopeng, an 18-year-old student, faced a life-or-death test on Saturday—not in an exam hall, but in the backseat of a car, where he performed life-saving CPR on a classmate who went into a heart attack. 

Jiang and his classmate were heading to take the spring college entrance exam when the emergency happened unexpectedly. 

At about 8:10 am, the two got into a taxi to the testing site.  Just a minute later, Jiang's classmate fell onto his knee.  "I thought he was just tired at first," Jiang said.  But then the classmate began breathing with difficulty and kicking the front seat before suddenly going limp (瘫软).  He soon stopped breathing. 

Jiang remembered the first aid lessons from school.  He quickly laid his classmate down and began CPR. 

"Go to the hospital," Jiang told the driver, Wang Tao.  Wang called the local traffic police and sped to the hospital, running six red lights and arriving in just-seven minutes—half the usual time. 

Jiang didn't tell his school about the whole thing until his classmate was safe with doctors.  He then rushed to the exam site, but arrived too late to take the 9 am Chinese language test. 

Later, doctors said his classmate would be okay without any brain damage (损伤), "The first four minutes of CPR in the car were very important," said doctors. 

Though he missed the exam, Jiang said he had no regrets about his decision.  "Exams can be taken again, but a life cannot," he said. 

Zara Lachlan is 21 years old and from the UK.  She set off from Portugal in a rowing boat on October 27.  She would be rowing across the Atlantic Ocean with no one else to help her. 

Zara faced many  (challenge) along the way.  Big waves turned her boat over.  She hurt her arm, cut her leg, and  (break) a finger.  At one point, she was nearly run over by a large ship.  When she was crossing through the Canary Islands, Zara ran into a big storm.  And  kept her boat off course for some time. 

However, Zara was so strong-willed that she decided not  (give) up.  Her goal was to be  youngest person to row across the Atlantic. 

For Zara, the trip was also a chance to see nature as few people ever do.  She saw dolphins, sharks, and even killer whales.  One time, she  (hit) by a flying fish.  She says the trip gave her many memories that would stay  her for life. 

After 97 days, she  (successful) arrived in Guiana, on the coast of South America on February 1^st, 2025.  "I went through a hard time.  It took a  (long) time than I had expected,  I'm still proud of my effort," Zara says. 

A nudge is a gentle push.  Sometimes it's a physical push.  A person might nudge a friend to make him move out of the way, or a parent might nudge a child to get her to say thank you for a gift.  Sometimes a nudge is a mental (心理) push.  A boss might nudge workers to work faster by reminding them that a deadline (最后期限) is coming up. 

In design terms, nudges usually have two characteristics.  First, they make one choice seem more attractive and useful than the others.  Second, design nudges don't say clearly what the best choice is.  They just suggest it in an indirect way. 

We can see many examples where nudges help people choose what's good for them.  Take students as an example.  Nudges can encourage them to give up negative behaviors, such as eating junk food at lunch, and develop positive ones.  Studies show that most of people take the first three foods they see more often than other foods.  Schools can use this information to nudge students to eat better by putting healthier food choices at the front of the line, and unhealthy ones at the end.  Giving food nicer names can also change student choices.  "Cool summer salad" will probably be more popular than just "salad". 

However, not all design nudges are beneficial.  For example, shops might shine a light on fruit, using this nudge to increase sales.  But it benefits shops, not customers.  A hotel that offers a free breakfast might choose to put low-cost but unhealthy food in a noticeable place and put higher cost but healthier food in a far corner.  This helps the hotel save money but is bad for guests. 

Design nudges are all around us because they are effective.  A growing number of people are now using nudges on themselves to help overcome problems and make better choices. 

Lightning usually destroys (破坏) trees it hits.  But scientists have found an amazing tree.  It not only lives through lightning strikes (击中) but actually grows better because of them!

For years, scientists thought lightning was only bad for trees.  But as they explored places like the Amazon rainforest, they started to think there could be trees that fight against lightning.  It wasn't until about 100 years ago that such "super trees" were discovered.  Now, they know of a tree that uses lightning's power to kill nearby trees and get more sunlight and nutrients (营养) for itself. 

In 2015, scientist Evan Gora saw a Dipteryx oleifera tree, which had been struck by strong lightning.  It wasn't badly harmed while the neighboring trees were killed.  Scientists thought this tree could handle lightning, but there was no way to be sure. 

Gora and his team saw more of these trees that grew well after lightning strikes.  So, they did a study.  They followed 93 trees struck by lightning for 2—6 years.  They found that all 9 Dipteryx oleifera trees in the study survived with little harm.  But 84 other trees were badly hurt, and 64% of them died within two years. 

These Dipteryx oleifera trees are very tall and have wide tops, making them 68% more likely to be struck by lightning than other trees.  During the study, one of the Dipteryx trees was struck twice in 5 years yet continued to grow well. 

At present, more studies suggest that these trees attract (吸引) lightning on purpose to destroy other trees and grow better.  Scientists are not sure how these trees survive lightning, but they guess it may involve the trees' ability to carry electricity.  They are also interested in other trees with similar characteristics. 

Last summer, my brother, Juan, and I were staying at our grandfather's house in Mexico.  When he was young, our grandfather was an explorer. 

One day, we were looking at his books and we found an old map hidden between the pages of a book called Animals of Mexico.  On the map there were directions to a secret place, deep in the forest. 

Juan wanted to follow the map.  "Perhaps we'll find some treasure!" he said excitedly. 

We set off early the next morning.  The marks on the map took us deeper and deeper into the forest.  The tall trees blocked the sunlight, so it was very dark.  Suddenly, we heard a deep loud noise.  From the dark corner came out a huge, wild, spotted cat. 

"It's a jaguar (美洲豹),"I breathed as quietly as I could. 

Juan froze with fear.  My heart was beating really fast, but I calmly looked the jaguar straight in the eyes and tried not to show how scared I was. 

"Back away, slowly," I said to Juan in a low voice. 

We walked backwards, very, very slowly.  The jaguar took one last look at us, then turned and disappeared back into the darkness. 

Juan's hands were shaking as he looked again at the map. 

"We're here!" he said.  "This is Grandpa's secret place. "

As we turned around, we saw a small, wooden cabin (木屋). 

We nervously opened the door and went inside.  On the walls, there were photos of beautiful jaguars, like the one we had seen. 

Still shaking like a leaf after our adventure, we began to realize that we had in fact found a treasure—a place where jaguars live in the wild. 

Tim had always struggled with his weight.  At school, his classmates would call him "Big Tim".  Every day, he wished he could be like other kids, running fast and playing sports 1 , but that always seemed out of reach. 

One day, a group of his classmates decided to play a 2 on him.  They secretly entered him for the school's long-distance race.  They thought it would be fun to watch him 3 . 

On the race day, as Tim was about to 4 his classmates to watch the race in the stands (看台), he saw some of them holding posters of his face with big words "The Big Runner" "Go Tim".  He realized he was tricked into the race.  He froze there, 5 . 

The race started, and to everyone's 6 , Tim began to jog.  It was not fast.  He kept moving, 7 he could hardly keep up with the other runners.  His legs burned with each step, but he didn't stop. 

As the race went on, something 8 .  A few students started cheering for him.  "Come on, Tim" they shouted.  Their encouragement made Tim feel 9 .  It wasn't about winning anymore; it was about 10 to himself that he could finish. 

By the time he reached the final lap (圈), Tim was tired out, but he pushed through.  As he 11 the finish line, he fell to the ground, completely out of breath. 

His classmates, who had once 12 him, were now clapping and shouting his name.  Tim smiled.  It didn't matter that he hadn't 13 the race.  He had finished, and that was more than he ever thought 14 .  From that day on, the teasing (取笑) stopped.  Tim had shown everyone that strength wasn't about 15 —it was about heart.
