• 1、Katie DeWitt is a high school student in Washington, US. She loves flying planes. At just 14, she took her (one) flight (飞行) in a small plane. It was a little scary at the very beginning, but once she was in the air, she loved it. "I saw everything up there! an amazing experience!" she said.

Katie is part of a programme (计划). It teaches young people how to be pilots (飞行员). Another student, Evie Nesselrode, is also in the programme. Although they go to different schools, they learn to fly together. They become good friends and form strong relationship.

In this programme, Katie and Evie learn about many subjects like physics (物理学) and maths. Maths is really important for pilots! They use it to know how heavy the plane is, how fast it is flying, and how long it will take to land. They learn these things to make sure every flight is safe. Katie and Evie never get tired learning them. In fact, they enjoy it so much when they see and feel their own (improve). They find they become even (organized) than before.

Katie and Evie don't just study in the classroom. They also practise flying real planes in the air. After flying for 30 hours with a teacher, they will be able (fly) on their own. Katie and Evie both dream of (become) real pilots one day. They know it takes hard work, but they are ready to try (they) best. "We have really big goals, and we (work) harder for them in the coming days. I have confidence that we can achieve them," Katie said. "Anyway, not many people get the chance to fly."

Steaming is one of the oldest and healthiest ways to cook food. People have steamed food for thousands of years, using simple pots. Today, it's still very popular all over the world.

You put a little water in a pot and bring it to a boil (around 100℃). The boiling water makes steam-hot water vapour (蒸气). You place the food over the water, not in it, on a special plate or basket with holes (孔). The steam rises and cooks the food softly. A tight lid (紧密的盖子) keeps the steam inside the pot.

Why is steaming good? It's easy for beginners. Next, steaming needs no oil or fat, so food is lower in calories (卡路里). It also keeps more nutrients (营养成分) inside vegetables compared to boiling them in water. Also, the steam cooks food softly. Boiling or frying can make food hard or dry. More importantly, steaming lets the food's delicious flavour come through.

Almost anything: Like vegetables, fish and seafood, dumplings, chicken, rice, and so on.

It makes food tasty while keeping all the good nutrients inside. Next time you cook vegetables or fish, try steaming!

    A. How does steaming work?

    B. Why don't you choose to boil or fry?

    C. What can you steam?

    D. Steaming is a fast, healthy, and clean way of cooking.

    E. First, you only need a pot, a little water, and a steamer basket.

Do you ever wish your pet could talk? Well, some animals on the Internet are doing just that. With the help of their owners a lot of training and some special buttons (按钮), pets are learning to "talk" in their own ways.

A popular pet right now is Merlin, an 8-month-old mini pig. People call him "the world's smartest pig". His owner, Mina Alali, put videos of him using buttons to communicate online. Each button has a different word, like "walk" or "food". Merlin presses (按) them to let Mina know what he wants.

Merlin isn't the only pet to learn this cool skill! Some pet dogs, cats, horses, monkeys and even parrots have all been doing the same. Bunny the Talking Dog is another star online with over 8 million followers. She can use over 50 buttons to make sentences and ask questions, though it sometimes takes her owner a while to understand what she means. However, for a pet, it's still amazing!

So, how do you teach a pet to "talk"?

First, get some buttons you can record your voice on. Then, use words your pet hears often, like"treat", "walk", or "play". Say the words clearly many times before you press the buttons. For example, "Want a TREAT? Let's get a TREAT!" Next, put the buttons in a quiet, easy-to-reach place. At last, teach your pet to press it with a paw (爪) or nose. Reward (奖励) them by giving them a real treat when they try!

It takes a lot of time and patience (耐心), and not every pet can learn to do it. But that's okay. Even without buttons, your pets can show their love to you in their own special ways!

(1)、Why does the writer talk about Merlin and Bunny?
A、To give examples of pets that can "talk". B、To encourage people to be kind to animals. C、To show one animal is better than the other.
(2)、What is Paragraph 5 mainly about?

In 2017, a famous painting called A Thousand Li of River and Mountains was on show at the Palace Museum in Beijing. This 900-year-old artwork attracted (吸引) lots of people. Among them was Gui Haowen, then a 16-year-old high school student.

Gui took some photos with her phone, but they didn't show the painting's beauty well. This made her want to learn more about photography and start taking pictures of cultural relics (文物).

However, taking photos in museums isn't easy. Museums don't let visitors use flash or tripods (闪光灯或三脚架), and the lights are often not very bright. "Taking a clear photo in those conditions is difficult," Gui said. But she didn't give up. She tried to be creative. For example, when she took a photo of a silver bowl, she used the shadows (阴影) to make it look like an ink painting.

Gui didn't just take photos. She also studied the history of cultural relics. By understanding the stories, she could take better photos of them. Gui visited around 60 museums and took countless pictures. Whenever she travelled to a new city, a trip to the museum was always at the top of her list.

In 2022, Gui began sharing her cultural relic photos online. Many young people enjoy her works and are becoming more interested in Chinese culture.

    Digital Citizenship Week

Every third week in October, schools around the world celebrate Digital Citizenship Week (数字公民周), which focuses on the healthy and responsible use of online technology. This was originally created by Common Sense Education. It is the time for students to know about their digital footprints (足迹) and why they matter so that they can develop good digital citizenship.

During the Week, the teachers always stress the importance of digital citizenship. It involves online safety, speaking up against cyberbullying (网络霸凌), protecting personal information, respecting copyright law and more. Good digital citizenship helps students understand the importance of balancing technology use with other non-digital activities. It also encourages students to connect with one another and create long-lasting relationships online. The key idea behind good digital citizenship is to treat other people, places, and things with respect.

However, students might not understand what information is not safe to share on social media, how to properly check sources, and the possible results of having online communications. Helping students understand digital citizenship helps them to manage Internet risks and succeed in the digital world. Teachers need to think about how digital citizenship is taught and learned in the school. There are some useful resources and models on the Internet that can help teachers develop a digital citizenship framework and program.

One of the important things of digital citizenship that students need to understand is their digital footprints. Every person who uses the Internet has a digital footprint. Because digital footprints can't be erased, students' digital footprints have the possibility to influence their whole life. Students' digital footprints can also leave them easy to get social engineering attacks or cyberbullying.

Since digital footprints may influence students' online safety, some suggestions are necessary for them. For example, they need to clear cookies (网络浏览数据) from time to time They should also be careful about what they share with online service providers, and who they share their information with. The most important thing is that they should be responsible for what they post on social media.

(1)、When do the schools around the world celebrate Digital Citizenship Week?

(2)、What's the key idea behind good digital citizenship?

(3)、Why do digital footprints have the possibility to influence one's whole life?

(4)、Do you think it's necessary to celebrate Digital Citizenship Week? Why or why not? Give two reasons.

  • 9、If you're working to become better or hoping to make a change, you'll probably hear your family and friends say "go big or go home". But sometimes big goals can shoot you in the foot. So, is it good to set high expectations?

Having high expectations could be beneficial. It can motivate (激励) you and increase your productivity. When you have high expectations for something, you'll probably behave in ways which can help make your expectations come true. For example, if you believe that you're able to score an A in a test, you will probably spend a lot of time working on it. And when you have to complete a written task before the deadline, having expectations on yourself can motivate you to keep on going. Another benefit of setting high expectations is that as you start meeting your expectations, you'll be even more motivated to set higher goals for yourself. In addition, having high expectations on yourself doesn't only benefit you. You're likely to encourage others to be more productive! While there's plenty of good that comes from setting high expectations, going overboard and being unrealistic in expectations can be detrimental.

Having high expectations sometimes can cause psychological (心理的) problems, such as worry and unhappiness. The findings of a study showed that a group of students who were expected to do perfectly by their parents experienced serious stress and anxiety (焦虑). Great expectations can also lead to great disappointment. This is especially true when you set expectations on other people whose actions you cannot control. For example, if you're feeling alone and you call up your friends, you surely expect them to make you feel better. When this fails to happen, you will feel disappointed and displeased with your friends. To avoid this situation, you should accept your friends for who they are and set your expectations around reality.

It is hard to manage expectations, but the main goal is to find the perfect balance in setting a more realistic and achievable expectation. Learn to let go of things, especially when they don't turn out the way you hoped. Most importantly, don't be afraid to celebrate your victories no matter how small they are.

(1)、If you have a high expectation on yourself, you will probably _________.
A、discourage others B、work hard to realize it C、be more confident than before D、have high expectations on others
(2)、The word "detrimental" in Paragraph 2 probably means "_________ ".
    A、harmful B、unusual C、disappointing D、impossible
(3)、The writer probably agrees that _________.
A、it's wise to ask your friends to help you set expectations B、stress is very likely to help you achieve your expectations C、parents should avoid setting expectations on their children D、we should set expectations on others according to the reality
(4)、What is the writer's main purpose in writing this passage?
A、To offer advice on how to realize expectations. B、To explain why people like to set high expectations. C、To lead people to take a right attitude towards expectations. D、To encourage people to set high expectations for themselves.
  • 10、The Stanford marshmallow (棉花糖) test was originally done by psychologist Walter Mischel in the late 1960s. Children aged four to six at a nursery school were placed in a room. A single sugary treat (甜食), selected by the child, was placed on a table. Each child was told if they waited for 15 minutes before eating the treat, they would be given a second treat. Then they were left alone in the room. Follow-up studies with the children later in life showed a connection between an ability to wait long enough to get a second treat and various forms of success.

As adults, in fact, we face "the marshmallow test" every day. We're not tempted (诱惑) by sugary treats, but by our computers, phones, and tablets—all the devices that connect us to the global delivery system for various types of information that do to us what marshmallows do to preschoolers.

We are tempted by sugary treats because our ancestors lived in a calorie-poor world, and our brains developed an ability to respond to these treats that reflected their value—a feeling of reward and satisfaction. But as we've reshaped the world around us, greatly reducing the cost and effort involved in getting calories, we still have the same brains we had thousands of years ago, and this mismatch is at the heart of why so many of us struggle to resist (抑制) tempting foods that we know we shouldn't eat.

A similar process is at work in our response to information. Our formative (发展的) environment as a species was information-poor, so our brains developed a system that prized new information. But global connectivity has greatly changed our information environment. We are now constantly bombarded (轰炸) with new information. Therefore, just as we need to be more thoughtful about our intake of calories, we also need to be more thoughtful about our intake of information, and refuse to accept the temptation of the mental "junk food" in order to manage our time most effectively.

(1)、According to Paragraph 3, there is a mismatch between ______.
A、the calorie-poor world and our own desire for food B、the shortage of sugar and our nutritional needs C、the food-rich world and our unchanged brains D、the attractive foods and our efforts to keep fit
(2)、What does the author suggest readers do?
A、Use diverse information sources. B、Be selective consumers of information. C、Absorb new information readily. D、Protect the information environment.
(3)、Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A、The Later, the Better B、The Sad Truth about Early Humans C、Eat Less, Read More D、The Marshmallow Test for Adults
  • 11、Relationships fade (逐渐消失). People change. But what if we could travel to the past and experience our old memories again?

Lexa Hillyer's first novel, Proof of Forever, deals with common topics in young adult literature such as friendships, relationships and self-discovery, but is filled with surprises. That's what makes it different from other novels.

The main characters, four seventeen-year-old girls—Joy, Tali, Luce and Zoe promised to be best friends forever. But, like many friends, they grew away from one another as their interests changed. Now, they hardly speak. After Joy asks the friends to get together before they leave for college, a photo booth camera (机器拍照亭) moves the girls two years back in time to their last summer at camp. The summer will change them forever again.

At first, the four girls are troubled by the absurdity (荒谬) of their time-traveling, but with one week of camp left, they finally realize they have to recreate their last summer together to return to the present day. They must learn to work together, or serious problems may happen. Along the way, the girls learn that the past doesn't necessarily repeat itself—It's filled with new memories and discoveries.

The ending is very surprising, with an unexpected twist (转折) that may even result in a few tears. However, the ending needlessly leaves a few questions unanswered and some problems to deal with.

Proof of Forever is not a common story about friendship. Because of its many plots and characters, the story is sometimes difficult to follow. While the storyline might interest younger readers, it is most suitable for readers 15 and older. However, it still is a good read, telling the ups and downs of coming of age and the power of friendship in an honest way.

(1)、The novel Proof of Forever is different from others because ________.
A、it includes some common topics B、it is Lexa Hillyer's first novel C、it gives readers many surprises D、it brings back readers' old memories
(2)、What happens when the girls get together?
A、They promise to be best friends forever. B、They talk about their last summer camp. C、They move the photo booth camera away. D、They have a time-travel to the past.
(3)、What can we learn from the passage?
A、The success of the novel depends on its ending. B、The girls suffer a lot but rebuild their friendship. C、Memories of the past bring trouble to the girls' lives. D、Young readers love the novel because of its simple plots.

  • 13、Image(形象)Isn't Everything

Before I went to high school, I was eager to start my new life. I wanted to get into the1 of popular students at school, so I bought a new outfit(套装)to present a good image for myself.

On the first day of school, I didn't know where to have my first class. I was standing in the hall, looking2, when a short girl wearing glasses came up and asked, "Hi, my name is Judy. Are you new? Do you want me to help you find your class?" Although she seemed not the kind of girl I wanted to make friends with, I told her my name and followed her, making3 conversation the whole way.

When we reached my classroom, she said, "It was nice meeting you. I hope your day goes all right. "I said thanks and waved good-bye.

In the classroom, I saw a big group of students around a girl wearing blue jeans with holes. She was talking about her adventures in summer. I thought this girl was popular. When the teacher came and told us to break up, I4 to get a seat next to her, and said, "Hi, my name is April and I'm new here." She said, "Hi, I'm Ella."

Once the class was over, I turned to her and asked, "My next class is physics. Could you help me find it?" She said "No"5 and walked to her friends. I heard her say, "Did you see that new girl trying to get into our group? Her outfit is so strange." They all looked at me and laughed.

The same type of thing happened in other classes. When I was ready to go home, someone came up and said, "Hi, again. How was your first day?" It was Judy. I told her my day was not good. She said she was sorry and6 to walk me outside.

Walking with Judy made me realize how7 it was to try to only make friends with popular people, and how nice it would be to have a friend like her.

As time went on, I made friends with lots of different people, but my8 was different. I decide whether a person is worth being my friend or not by who he or she is, not how popular he or she is.

  • 16、Strength training helps build strength, power and endurance (耐力). Many adults do this exercise, but is it safe and good for kids? People once thought it was not good, even dangerous for kids. They worried it might hurt kids and affect their growth. But a new study says: strength training actually makes kids' health better overall.

When kids do strength training, their muscles grow, which makes them stronger. It also makes their bones, joints and body systems healthier. It's really good for their bodies.

Becca Rigg is a fitness teacher at a sports center. She knows the good things about strength training. She takes her kids to do strength training 2 to 3 times a week. "I like that teens feel more confident after doing this exercise. They're happy when they see they're getting stronger. Sometimes they make strength training part of their life, and it's easier to keep doing it later," says Rigg.

To start strength training, it's very important to learn the right way from an experienced coach. The coach can make sure kids do the movements safely and correctly. At first, teens can use their own body weight (like doing push-ups or squats). Later, they can make it harder with equipment (like a barbell).

So, let's cheer our kids on as they lift, pull, and push their way to a stronger future. With our support and care, they'll grow up ready to take on whatever life throws at them.

(1)、What does the new study say about strength training for kids?

(2)、How often does Becca Rigg take her kids to do strength training?

(3)、Why do kids need to learn strength training from an experienced coach?

(4)、As a middle school student, would you like to try strength training? Why? (Please give 2 reasons.)

  • 17、Like most people, you usually start work with the hope of being as productive as possible. Yet, as the day rolls on, you find your task list grows. What you set out to achieve in the beginning seems to get pushed to the side.

You're not alone. Many of us don't have a process toprioritize tasks and always feel like we're playing catch-up. We fail to decide what's the most important task even when everything on the to-do list feels important. But we can get ahead of the game and stay on top of deadlines with some simple methods to set priorities and manage our workload.

Here's a simple way to prioritize our daily tasks and focus (专注) on the work that matters most: Of all the things we now have the energy for, do the thing we're normally least likely to do. If we have two live frogs (青蛙) to eat for breakfast, the idea is to eat the ugliest one as early as possible.

There are several ways this trick (技巧) can benefit us.

Doing something we rarely (很少) do is energizing. You do a behavior like washing your windows that you never do. Having clean windows won't change your life but it challenges your conception of yourself. It influences how we see ourselves. Getting our body moving gives us energy and can improve our focus.

Unfamiliar behaviors often provide more chances to help us grow than familiar ones. When I write for a new publication, it's with a new editor. I get different feedback. I need to change my style to match the style of that publication, so I develop my skills. In this way we'll expand (发展) ourselves, our skills, and our future opportunities.

Some people react to anxiety by working hard on very comfortable behaviors but pay no attention to uncomfortable tasks that are a higher priority. The way of prioritizing helps prevent us from doing that. It makes it harder to fool ourselves that we're being productive by doing busywork that's super comfortable for us but has little chance of changing our life.

Should we use this trick all the time? No. This is a good tip for when we've got energy, but we're swimming in thoughts about all the things we could do, and we're having trouble deciding and focusing.

Priorities are great. Knowing our priorities reduces stress, helps us focus and can also improve productivity and time management. But remember to be realistic about how much work we can actually do each day. When we prioritize our work properly, we're sure to have a good day.

(1)、What does the word "prioritize" in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A、To explain what's the most beneficial. B、To decide what should be done first. C、To tell what's the most meaningful. D、To discuss what can be achieved.
(2)、The ugliest frog refers to ________.
A、the animal we fear most B、the to-do list we've messed up C、what we are least likely to do D、what makes our day terrible
(3)、What can we learn from the passage?
A、Doing unfamiliar behaviors possibly improves our skills. B、Doing energizing behaviors shows how we see others. C、Doing things we rarely do leads to poor focusing. D、Doing comfortable things changes our life.
(4)、What is the passage mainly about?
A、A solution to reduce our stress. B、Ways to help us focus and decide. C、A trick to increase our productivity. D、Advantages of developing our skills.

I have three exams next week. So, I'll spend most of the weekend studying. I'm worried about the exams, but they aren't the only thing I'm worried about. Like most people, I'm worried about missing out on all the fun activities my friends will do.

I have serious FOMO—fear (害怕) of missing out. It is the feeling or idea that you are missing out on something important or enjoyable that others are experiencing. And a big part of FOMO is the feeling that your friends won't miss you when you're not there.

FOMO is a pretty common feeling, especially when people are going out more. Social media (社交媒体) makes it even worse. It's easy to see other people doing fun things while you're doing something boring. Don't get me wrong—I also do fun things, but I still get caught up in FOMO.

Worst of all, I feel like I'm missing out on things I don't even want to do. Even though I don't want to go to a party, I still get FOMO when I think about my friends who are already there. When you feel like you're missing out, it can be hard to decide if you even wanted to go out in the first place. It can make you do things you don't want to. No one wants to miss a joke or see all the pictures when they weren't there. But it's important to take a step back and think about it. Would you have suggested that activity? Do you really want to go, or do you want to go because your friends are going? Do you have something else you'd rather be doing?

Even though FOMO can be harmful to your life, it can also have some good benefits. I know a lot of people who joined clubs or took up new hobbies because their friends did. A lot of these clubs and hobbies have made people happy, including me. In that way, I owe (归功于) some of my school experience to FOMO.

So it's best to avoid FOMO as much as possible. The best thing to do is to check in with yourself and notice how you feel. If you have a good reason for not doing something, don't worry too much about missing out. Do what's best for you, even if that means uninviting yourself from a plan. Your friends are your friends for a reason—they won't forget about you.

When I moved to a new city with my parents, I had to join a new junior high school in Grade Nine. It was a top school, and everyone seemed to be1 at their studies. On my first day, I stood outside the classroom, feeling nervous and unsure. I didn't know anyone, and I was afraid I couldn't2 up with the others.

As the teacher led me into the classroom, all eyes turned to me. I felt my face turn red and my hands shake. The teacher asked me to introduce myself, but my voice was so low that almost no one could hear. After that, I sat in the last row3, too afraid to talk to anyone. During the first class, the math teacher wrote difficult problems on the blackboard. I tried hard to follow, but I couldn't understand most of them. I started to4 about falling behind.

Just then, a girl next to me leaned over and passed me a piece of paper. On it were clear notes she had taken. "Don't worry," she whispered with a smile. "I can5 you review after class." Her name was Lily, and she was the top student in our class. After class, she explained the math problems to me. She used simple words and drew pictures to make it easier to understand. Weeks later, our class had a group project about environmental protection. I was6 to join a group because I thought no one would want me. But Lily came over and said, "Come with us! Your ideas are important." In the group, I tried to share my thoughts, and everyone listened carefully. With their7, I became more confident. I even volunteered to give our group's presentation.

Now, I'm no longer the lonely new student. I have made many friends, and my grades have improved a lot. I know that without Lily's kindness and help, I would have8 up easily. It's true that a little help from others can make a big difference. No matter how hard the new environment is, we can always find warmth if we open our hearts.
