It is said that Harvey Ball, an artist from the USA, created it. It began as a bright yellow circle with two dots (圆点) and a curved (弯曲的) black line. The two dots are eyes and the curved black line is a smiling mouth. Later, Harvey came up with the idea of the smiling face for World Smile Day to make people devote (奉献) one day each year to smiles and kind acts.

There are a number of things you can do on that day to make people around you smile. You can do little acts of kindness, like buying a stranger a cup of coffee, offering your seat to people in need on the bus, etc. Or you can surprise someone in your family with a gift, by cooking a meal for them, or doing something special for them.

World Smile Day encourages you to do something to bring smiles into the world. If we do this, we can make the world a better place.

The white stick has been used by many blind people for a long time. However, it hasn't really been improved, until a blind engineer named Kursat decided to do something to change that. He hoped his invention would help the blind.

He invented a smart stick called the WeWalk. The smart stick uses built-in speakers and different sensors (传感器) to warn about possible dangers. It helps blind people in navigating (导航) around their environment. It makes their travel much easier. The stick is priced at around $500. It is less than half the price of most smart phones. Most people can afford it. This invention is going to change life a lot for the blind.

Kursat well understands the difficulties that the blind face. That's because he is blind himself. He decided to put his knowledge of technology into inventing something. It would not only change his life, but also the life of many others.

"In these days, we are talking about flying cars. But the blind have been using just a simple stick. As a blind person, when I am at the bus stop, I don't know which bus is coming or which stores are around me. Now that kind of information can be provided by the WeWalk," he said, "I believe life of the blind will be much easier and safer."

The Lantern Festival falls on the 15th of the first month of the lunar calendar (阴历). This day is always the1 full moon in the new year. Ancient people also called it the Shangyuan Festival. Celebrations and traditions on this day2 from the Han Dynasty and became popular in the Tang Dynasty.

Watching the red lanterns is one of the main traditions. Lanterns of different shapes and sizes are usually put on trees or along river banks on display. It is said that sky lanterns were first used by Zhuge Kongming to3 help when he was in trouble. Today, when the lanterns slowly rise4 the air, people make wishes.

Another tradition is5 lantern riddles (谜语). The riddles are usually short, wise, and sometimes humorous. The answer to a riddle can be a Chinese character (汉字), a famous person's name, or a place name.

The most important thing is to eat sweet dumplings with6 tastes. In northern China, they are called yuanxiao7 in the southern part, they're named tangyuan. Because making sweet dumplings is like a game or an activity, they are usually done8 by a group of friends or family members.

In old times, the Lantern Festival was also romantic. Watching lanterns gave young people a9 to meet each other. A line from Xin Qiji, a poet during the Song Dynasty, shows this:

Each new year is like a blank notebook, waiting for us to fill it with wonderful stories and growth. People can improve their lives in many meaningful ways. So I am going to make clear resolutions that I will try my best to keep.

The first one is about taking up a new hobby. I am going to join the school dancing club next term. In my opinion, this resolution will not only make me happy but also bring joy to the people around me.

I am also going to get fitter and healthier next year. Besides jogging for 30 minutes every morning, I plan to do push-ups for at least 15 minutes every evening after finishing my homework. Every time I exercise, I can feel my body becomes stronger. I believe keeping this exercise routine will help me stay away from illness and make me a healthier and happier person.

Last but not least, I know my English isn't good enough now, especially in listening and writing, so I am going to spend two more hours each weekend studying English.
