It was December and the snow was falling quietly outside. The four March sisters, Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy, were sitting1 the fire. They were knitting (编织) socks for soldiers (土兵). Last week I competed in the school spelling bee. This vocabulary competition (hold) at our school every year. This year was the first time me to take part in it. We all sat in three rows on the stage. When I looked up, I saw that the whole school had come (watch) us take turns to spell words aloud. Suddenly, I felt very nervous. Soon, the spelling bee began. We often hear of people who make long journeys to different parts of the world, with some even making it all the way to space. However, the biggest journey one can make is within oneself. The self-discovery journey helps you feel more confident and at peace with yourself. Then, how do you start your journey of self-discovery?

You may start with finding out what you like most about yourself. It could be about how creative you are about your ability to care about others or about your skills in playing an instrument or a sport. This will help you know better about your personal values or abilities.

Knowing what makes you excited is also helpful. What makes your eyes light up? It could be when you are performing a dance on stage, when you help your dad fix his computer, or even when you are doing research on your school science project.

It is always more comfortable to be on familiar (熟悉的) ground. However, in order to discover yourself you will need to put yourself in some uncomfortable situations. This may make you feel nervous, but it will give you a chance to learn more about how you feel and think when challenged.

What is your true purpose in life? As you go about your daily activities, ask yourself these questions to learn about your true self. Such questioning will help you to think deeply and realize what kind of person you want to be.

As you go through life, the experiences can change you, and this helps you grow. As Ariana Huffington said, "The journey towards self-discovery is life's greatest adventure."

Scientists have found that a real smile is featured by two main muscle (肌肉) movements. When we smile, we lift our mouth upwards and cause the skin around our eyes to gather into folds. These muscle movements are usually absent in the case of a forced smile, especially when the smile is small. Our brains are highly skilled at distinguishing the differences in muscle movements. That's why though trying to fake a real smile can be hard, discovering it on someone else is a piece of cake.

One of the most common reasons why you look unnatural in photos is an increased awareness (意识) of your appearance. The worry about posture, hair, and makeup can add to the stress, killing the chances of a real smile. A smile looks best when it comes naturally. Warm and welcoming smiles come along with warm and welcoming body language, but when you're in front of the camera, trying too hard to perform can make your body language appear stiff (僵硬的) and far from welcoming.

Besides, facial expressions are not always understood in the same way. A smile can mean differently in different cultures. For example, a wide smile that seems welcoming to some may appear fake and dishonest. This may also influence how people feel about your smile in photos.

However, we shouldn't let this trouble us too much. So, if you want to smile naturally before the camera, perhaps the simplest trick is to give your brain a real reason to feel happy. Maybe recall a joyful moment or just think back to a funny story you read...that should work!

At first, John and Danny stayed in the shallow end (浅水区). They played games in the water with a few other boys. Every now and then, John watched other boys jump, dive (跳水), and even do challenging actions off the diving board, like flipping in the air, but he did not feel brave enough to try it himself.

After a while Danny said they should take turns jumping off the diving board. John looked nervously at Danny and shook his head. Danny told John that it was not as scary as it looked. John finally agreed to give it a try. Slowly, he climbed to the top of the diving board. He took a few steps to the end of the board and looked over at Danny. Danny gave him a big smile. John took a deep breath, closed his eyes, and jumped. He hit the water with a splash and moved quickly up to the surface. Danny ran to John to give him a high-five. Then they spent the rest of the day enjoying themselves jumping off the diving board.

What peer pressure is

Peers are people who are about the same age as you. Peer pressure is when one or more friends or people your own age make you feel pressured to do something. You feel as if you have to do that thing because your peers are doing it, or are trying to make you do it.

Good peer pressure

Good peer pressure is when you feel pressured to do something good. You might do something good for you, for others, or for the environment.

Bad peer pressure

Bad peer pressure is when you feel pressured to do something you shouldn't do. For example, it might be something that goes against rules, something dangerous, or something bad for your health. It might also be something that goes against your values, or what you believe is good or right.

①If a friend tries to pressure you to do something, you might feel you should do it to please your friend. You might even feel that the person will not be your friend if you do not do it.

②People often want to be accepted by their peers and not feel as if they stand out because they are different in some way. Sometimes people are afraid others will make fun of them if they do not do what everyone else is doing.

Make decisions when you feel peer pressure

Here are some questions to ask yourself when you feel peer pressure to do something:

·Could I get into trouble for doing this?

·Might doing this hurt myself or another person, or hurt someone's feelings?

·Does this go against my values?

·Will I feel sorry or embarrassed if my family, teachers, or others find out about it?

If you answer "yes" to any of these questions, you are feeling bad peer pressure. If people keep pressuring you, say, "I do not want to talk about it anymore." Then walk away and feel proud that you made a good decision.

A Schoolyard Garden

Have you ever eaten something that you grew in your own garden? Many people (not have) the pleasure of this experience. Alice White, the owner of a restaurant, set out to change all that for a special group of students at a middle school.

Alice worked with the school's headmaster to create a cooking and gardening program at the school. She believes in the (important) of people knowing where their food comes from. Her goal at the middle school was to show children the pleasure in gardening and in (prepare) the foods that they grew. She wanted to teach them that a healthy body and a healthy environment go hand in hand.

Sarah loved reading books. She loved reading novels and. One day, a small book came in the mail. It was for Sarah. The book looked very different. It was on golden paper. It was about a magical place. Strange things happened there. One example from the book was about a boy who could control people. In one scene, he made his friends tell funny jokes.

Sarah loved the book. She read it all the time. Then something strange happened to her. The book gave Sarah a special power. She could control other people. She was like the boy in the book. During one exam, she made her friend tell silly jokes. Her friend got in.

She wanted to play more tricks on people. After school, Sarah did not go home. She went to the local store. There she made people fall down. She made the kids run around and around. She loudly. But she caused many problems to others.

After that, she left and started to walk home. She saw her basketball coach. He was about to walk in front of a bus when he was looking the other way. She must him! She used her power to control him. She didn't make him walk until the bus left. She felt happy to save her coach.

Sarah learned something that day. It was more to help people than play jokes on them. So, she put a limit (限度) on how she used her power. She did not want to do bad things with it anymore. She only wanted to do something good.
