Humans have tried to predict (预测) the weather. From the hunters of ancient times to today's pilots, predicting rain or shine can shape people's lives and make a difference. Do you know how people predict the weather?

In 650 BC, the Babylonians tried to predict the weather based on the appearance of clouds. Around 340 BC, Aristotle, a famous Greek thinker and scientist, wrote Meteorology. It introduced the types of weather, such as rain, clouds and lightning. Aristotle believed that there was water, air and fire around the Earth. It was almost   2, 000 years before his ideas were replaced by new ones.

By 300 BC in China, a calendar gradually divided the year into 24 solar terms, each solar term related to a type of weather, like the Rain Water (the start of the spring rains), the Waking of Insects (the spring thunder awakens sleeping insects) and so on. That was useful for farmers to plan when to plant and harvest (收获) crops.

People used lots of ways to predict the weather over the centuries. You might have heard the expressions like "Red sky at night, sailor's delight", which suggests a red sky in the evening is followed by good weather. This has a basis in science, as does telling wind direction through smoke from the fire. On the other hand, some thought that if sheep crowded together, it meant rain. But there isn't any science behind it.

The science of weather prediction really took off in the 1830s with the invention of the telegraph (电报). It sent messages over hundreds of thousands of miles, so weather maps were drawn up and storm systems were studied. The next big step came in the 1920s with the invention of the "radiosonde (无线电探空仪)", a balloon carrying weather instruments high above the ground to collect information. Experts took the information and built a picture of the weather over the following few days.

Today, supercomputers are used to take data (数据) from the world. And it is processed very fast to work out the weather. For example, they once helped predict where Hurricane Lee, which hit the US and Canada, would land nine days in advance (提前).

Shang Qinjie, also known as the modern "Shenbi Maliang", has helped his hometown out of poor conditions with his paintbrush.

Shang Qinjie has been engaged (从事) in art-related work in the city since graduation (毕业). During the Spring Festival in 2020, Shang Qinjie began to paint on a few walls in his hometown, Xiaotun Village. This made his village more colorful and was liked by many villagers.

Later, more works were painted, although painting on walls was a tough task. Shang started painting at 8 o'clock in the morning and continued until the sun went down. Usually it took seven or eight days to complete a whole painting. But when he saw more and more people come here to enjoy his paintings, he felt very happy. He liked painting some cartoon characters such as Nezha and Sun Wukong, because he thought those characters could give people power. As his works became popular on the Internet, Xiaotun Village also became a popular travel place. Villagers there didn't go out to work anymore. They improved their living conditions by selling local products (产品). Shang Qinjie also realized painting in the village was very meaningful. So he will continue creating art in his hometown.

Shang Qinjie's story is just one example of how young people are changing their hometowns. Many artists like Shang are using the artistic methods (方法) loved by young people to let people feel the beauty of the countryside. It not only makes the childhood of left-behind children more interesting, but also brings new life to those unknown villages.

Over the last few centuries, there have been many changes in our lives. 

To start with, people were not able to travel such a long distance in such a short time in the past. Planes were not very popular at that time because taking a plane used to be a very expensive way to travel. Nowadays, we have fast, comfortable cars, and more and more people can travel by plane.

Secondly, in the past, people had to work much harder because they did not have the tools that we have today. Today, most of the difficult and dangerous work is done by computers and machines.

Thirdly, in the past, the living conditions were not as good as they are now. There were no bathrooms or running water in many houses, and many people could not buy things like fridges, TV sets or washing machines. Now, most families have several of these things.

Finally, nowadays, more and more people have the chance to get a good education. In the past, there were fewer schools and the quality of education was much poorer. Now education is free for primary and middle school students. Also, it is much easier to find the educational materials that you need on the Internet now.

The scientific and technological development in the world is amazing. Life now is much better than it used to be. And we are still creating new things to make our lives better and easier.

Frank used to be a shy and quiet boy. During his primary school years, he seldom spoke in class. He was afraid to answer questions. He didn't have many friends because he was too nervous to talk to others. As a result, he often felt lonely. His grades were just average (一般的).

However, when Frank entered middle school, things began to change. His teachers noticed that he was a very kind and thoughtful student. They encouraged him to speak up more in class. Slowly, Frank started to become confident (自信的). He began to answer questions actively and even joined the school's debate (辩 论) team, which helped him improve his speaking skills. Of course, his grades had a great improvement.

Frank also made new friends. He joined a few clubs, including the soccer club and the art club. These club activities helped him become more outgoing. He learned how to work in a team and how to communicate better with others. Now, Frank is one of the top students in his class, and he has many good friends. He is no longer the shy boy he once was.
