I always have fun at school

Electives (选修课) are always popular with students because they give the chance to learn something exciting, and they' re a welcome break from regular courses like maths and physics. Here are just a few of the exciting electives lucky teenagers can take in some of China's middle schools. 

● Self-defense

A school from Chongqing

The school offers a self-defense course— just for girls. Those who attend the lessons have the chance to study basic self-protection skills in a one-on-one practice. They learn how to get away and defend themselves against attacks. "I feel safer in myself now, " said Zhang Yi, 15, a girl student. 

● Pottery

A school from Tianjin

Young artists at the school love to get their hands dirty creating beautiful pieces. Students learn how to make different kinds of clay projects. In the end, they have the skills to make their own clay bowls, cups, vases and pots. 

● Horse riding

A school from Beijing

Equestrians (马术) can look pretty cool, can't they? Teenagers at this school can now choose a course in riding skills. To ride a horse in the right way, a student must hold the head forward and keep his back straight. Students come away from this elective not only knowing how to ride a horse gracefully, but also becoming physically fitter!

Nowadays in many Chinese cities, schools have made class breaks longer. They used to be 10 minutes, but now they are 15 minutes. This change is to help students and teachers go outside and play more. 

Before, the short breaks didn't give students much time to play outside, especially if they were in big buildings with many floors. Sometimes, schools didn't let students leave their rooms during breaks because they were worried about safety. 

Now, with longer class breaks, schools want to make sure students can play and exercise for at least 30 minutes every day. Cities like Beijing, Tianjin, and Qingdao have started doing this. In Beijing, they made the breaks longer by taking time from the longer breaks in the middle of the day. This didn't change when students start and finish school. 

In Wuxi, a city in Jiangsu Province, schools have 15-minute breaks and make sure students have one gym class each day. In order to help students play outside and talk with their friends, schools ask students to exercise for at least 100 minutes every day. The people in charge of schools there said they want to give the break time back to the students. 

In Qingdao, a school started playing different games outside, like jump rope and hula hoop(呼啦圈 ), and also had puzzles to play inside during the longer breaks. They organize the students by the floor they are on so everyone can play outside. A check in May showed that more students in Qingdao are getting good scores on their health tests. 

Look around your classroom! What hairstyles( 发型 ) do you see? Many primary and middle school girls now wear low ponytails( 马尾辫)and have bangs(刘海). Their bangs are long, like a" fish' s whiskers(胡须)". These bangs cover their foreheads(前额) and make their faces look smaller. Boys often cut their hair short on the sides and leave the top a bit messy for a cool look. 

Why do students choose these styles?

Girls say, "Long bangs hide(隐藏) my round face!"

Some copy stars: They see these hairstyles in TV shows, movies, or cartoons and think they look cool. 

Others want to match friends, "If my best friend has this haircut, I want it too!"

Experts(专家) say, "It' s okay to like popular hairstyles— everyone wants to look nice! Sharing (分享) style ideas can also help you make new friends. But remember: Just because it's popular. It doesn't mean it's right for you. "

As students of modern times, we have a colourful school life. Every day, we get lots of knowledge on different subjects in class. And our school organizes many activities. In this way, they can help us put what we have learned into practice. 

After class, we take part in all kinds of activities, such as playing football, basketball, badminton and so on. They are good for our health. Besides, we are able to join the music club and the art club. There we can enjoy famous works, learn to play instruments(乐器) or draw pictures. There are chances for us to use computers and talk with some foreign teachers about anything we are interested in at the English corner. 

Now, most of us can play good computer games and have a good sense of spoken English. In addition to these after-school activities, there are many others, such as sports meetings, social investigations( 社会调查) and so on. All those activities make our school life attractive and interesting. I'm sure they are very useful to us. 

In the morning, Daniel and Peter finished their breakfast quickly. They put on their school uniforms, took their schoolbags and walked quickly to the bus stop. They had to wait for their school bus as usual. They waited for half an hour but the bus didn't come. The two brothers were starting to get worried. They did not want to be late for school. 

Just then Daniel' s classmate, Ben, came with a football on his bike. They were surprised to see that Ben wasn't in his school uniform. 

Ben stopped in front of the two brothers and asked, "Where are you going?"

"To school, " replied Peter quickly. 

"Why aren't you ready for school, Ben?" Daniel asked. 

"Have you forgotten that today is a school holiday?" laughed Ben. "We have no lessons today!"

When Daniel and Peter told their mother about it, they all laughed. At last, the brothers joined Ben in playing football in the field nearby.

School systems ( 制度 ) are different from country to country. The students in Singapore study 1 subjects than we do. My friend Mike is a middle school student in Singapore. Most of the time, he is always busy. He 2 Chinese, Physics and Chemistry. He also has to have Paper Writing, Maths and PE classes. On Wednesday, Mike only has three classes. 3 he has six classes on Friday. 

In Singapore, 4 is different every day. On Wednesday, Mike has lunch at 10:30 a. m. because he has a PE class at noon. On Friday, it 5 him the whole morning to have four classes, so he has lunch at 1:00p. m. The timetable of lunch solves(解决) the 6 of long queues(队)in the students' canteen. 

In Singapore, students have different classes in different 7 . If you walk in the school, you can always see students 8 their schoolbags on their shoulders rushing to the next classroom. So sometimes Mike arrives at the classroom just as the bell rings. The ten-minute break seems to be too 9 for students to have enough time to go to the room or for snacks.
