Did you throw something away today? The answer for most people would be yes. But where does our1 go?

It doesn't just sit in the rubbish bin. Every day,2 come to take the rubbish from our rubbish bins. They put it into a big truck and3 it to landfills (垃圾填埋场). At the landfill, people sort (分类) the rubbish. They recycle some,4 some and bury (埋) some of it underground. The more rubbish gets recycled, the5. It means that less rubbish ends up in landfills. Landfills can also be bad for the environment.

So many Chinese cities encourage everyone to sort out their rubbish6 throwing it away. Put the food in one bag. Put the plastic bottles in7. And throw them in the right rubbish bins. In this way, we can help8 a lot of time, money and energy for all of society.

Many foreign9 have good sorting systems (系统). So they have higher recycling rates (比率). In Sweden, only 4 percent of household waste10 in landfills every year. In Japan, people recycle nearly 10 percent of all rubbish.

There is11 a lot to do when it comes to rubbish sorting in China. People in the country make about 300 million tons of rubbish every year.12 they only recycle less than a quarter of the waste. The13 of it ends up in landfills. Most of it is unsorted. The good news is that many cities are trying different ways to make things better. • 17、根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有一项为多余选项。

Every week, even every day, we have lots of different tasks to finish. With our busy lifestyle, it can be hard for us to find time to volunteer. Volunteering can offer help to people in need. But for the volunteers themselves, the benefits may even be greater. Why?

Volunteering can be good for your health. Studies suggest that focusing on others rather than your own issues can make your stress levels go down, strengthen your immune system (免疫系统) and increase your general sense of life satisfaction.

Being volunteers helps you develop new relationships. It lets you meet people from all walks of life. These can help you build close relationships with them, which can have a lasting influence on your life.

During volunteering, you can have lots of opportunities to learn useful and important skills. For example, volunteer organizations always provide on-the-job training courses for volunteers before they start the work. Those courses can help you learn some skills for certain jobs. And they're often offered to you for free.

Volunteering can make your resume (简历) attractive. Are you stuck for what to write on your resume to get the job you want? Research has shown that people who volunteer have a better chance of finding a job than those who don't. Whether you do one thing on a regular basis, or help with various causes for a short period, each voluntary experience you have will impress your future boss.

    A. Try to list your hobbies and interests on the resume.

    B. Doing volunteer work teaches you valuable job skills.

    C. This is because helping someone else makes you pay attention to the positive things in life.

    D. And it gives you a good chance to communicate with them.

    E. Deal with it by showing the volunteer work you have done.

    F. However, the benefits of volunteering can be great.

  • 18、No one wants to go on a fun trip but end up spending the whole time running to the bathroom. While bad seafood might cause a stomachache, the trip itself can also upset your stomach.

Your stomach is full of tiny helpers that work to digest (消化) your food. But when you travel, things change. Sitting for too long, changing time zones (时区), and not sleeping on time can all make your stomach feel uncomfortable.

For one thing, sitting on a plane or in a car for hours can squeeze your stomach. This slows down how food moves, and your stomach may feel uncomfortable. Also, your body has a "daily clock" that helps it know when to eat, sleep, and even poop (排便)! But when you travel far, this clock gets mixed up. You might not go to the bathroom like you normally do. Sleep matters, too. If you don't get enough sleep, your stomach can become upset. You may even feel like eating a lot of sweet snacks, which can make things worse.

The good news? You can stop stomach troubles before they start! Try standing up and stretching (伸展) every hour on the plane or during long car rides. If you're flying across time zones, begin changing your bedtime a few days early to help your body get used to the new time. And before your trip, be sure to sleep well every night. A rested body is a happy body, and that means a happy stomach, too.

So remember: move, sleep, and plan early. That way, your trip can be full of fun, not bathroom runs

  • 19、Two weeks before the Christmas holiday, I hadn't sent out our holiday cards yet. Each year, we get lots of cards from friends—some with family photos, some with bright holiday wishes. This year, I wanted to send out cards with nice family pictures.

After taking my two sons to school, I called a local photographer. He said he could come on Sunday morning. He told us all to wear white shirts. I thought it would be perfect.

But I had so much to do—shopping, cooking, and taking care of everyone. On top of that, I had to find white shirts for the whole family. I finally bought white polo shirts for all of us. I felt proud and excited. Everything was ready!

But on Saturday night, when I said good night to my younger son Jim, I noticed his hair. It was a complete mess! He really needed a haircut, and it was too late to go to a salon (美发厅). Then I had an idea. I got my scissors and made our bathroom into a little "salon".

My son sat still while I tried to cut his hair. When I finished, we looked at each other ... It was terrible! I had never cut hair before. What was I thinking?

I told my husband what happened. He gave Jim a funny look and said, "This is the worst haircut ever!" I felt awful. But then he smiled and said, "Don't be so sad. Let me fix it."

Soon, both of our boys came to me—with matching buzz cuts (寸头)! A minute later, my husband showed up ... with a buzz cut too!

Our holiday cards turned out great—with a little less hair, and a lot more love.

    A Farewell (告别) Song

    Wang Wei

    No dust (尘土) is raised on the road wet with morning rain;

The willows by the hotel look so fresh and green.

I invite you to drink a cup of wine again.

West of the Sunny Pass no more friends will be seen.

    (Translated by Xu Yuanchong)

Friends are important in our lives, but we sometimes have to separate from our friends. A Farewell Song is about saying goodbye to a friend. It is a famous poem by Wang Wei, a great poet, who lived in the Tang Dynasty. He is good at writing poems and drawing. When talking about Wang Wei, people often say there are pictures in his poems and there are poems in his pictures.

"No dust is raised on the road wet with morning rain." "The willows by the hotel look so fresh and green". A picture of silence and peace gets into our eyes. After the morning rain in spring, the road, the willows (柳树) and the hotel are completely different. The hotel looks green. The willows look fresh. Everything is nice, gentle and silent. Willow branches are considered as a typical symbol of farewell in China. In ancient times, Chinese people often used them as gifts when they said goodbye to their friends.

Lastly, "West of the Sunny Pass no more friends will be seen" shows the feeling of being alone and missing someone. It also shows his sincere love and care for his friend.
