Dear Linda, 

I know your school will hold activity about helping others. Here are some ideas about it. As the saying goes, helping others is helping  (we). Everyone needs help in life. 

Last Saturday, our head teacher Ms. Li encouraged us  (do)some voluntary work in our school. She also led us to the city park and the children's hospital. It was my (one)time to be a volunteer. I was shy at first. I cleaned the benches and picked up litter in the city park. 

At that time, I found people  (smile)at me. That made me happy. In the children's hospital, I told the sick kids some  (story)and jokes to cheer them up. At the end of the day, I felt really tired happy. I was glad that I could do something for them.

Volunteering is one of the most amazing experiences for students in Guangzhou. Every weekend, we can see young volunteers doing meaningful work across our city, such as helping at community centres or cleaning parks. 

What can students get from volunteering? To begin with, it can improve their real-life ability. Last month, Li Hua volunteered at a local nursing home. He learned how to clean up the house and tidy the rooms there. He also managed to cook delicious food for the old people. 

During the Guangzhou Book Donation Drive last term, Xiao Ming worked with students from five different schools. They worked together to collect thousands of books for the students from poor areas. Through this activity, they became close friends. The friendship they got was just as valuable as the books they collected. 

Volunteering can also help create a warm community. For example, helping the disabled children in the children's hospital can help them feel the love and care from the society. 

Who can volunteer? Anyone! You don't need special skills. Many organizations like the Guangzhou Youth Volunteer Association welcome student helpers. Why not try volunteering this weekend? You'll gain more than you give. 

①Is the summer vacation long enough to turn life for the better? Every person has his own talents and interests. Find something you care about, and you will see the difference. 

②Organize a clean-up program. People often throw litter in the place where there is already litter. This leaves the community in a mess. The environment will become better if someone volunteers to help. You could pick up the rubbish with your friends once a week in your neighbourhood. You could also help take care of the plants every few days. Surely, a clean and tidy neighbourhood will be worth the work. 

③Show your love to the old. Our city has some old people's homes. Without children around them, the old people there might feel lonely once in a while. Maybe they need your help. In fact, you can do a lot for them. For example, you can talk with them or play games with them. Listening to them carefully is also a good idea. Some old people can't see clearly and they would like you to read to them. No matter what small things you do, you can make them feel loved. 

④Set up a reading project with your friends. Share your favourite books with them. Besides, you may read aloud to each other and talk about what you read. Either a book or an article can start a lively discussion and your further thinking. The process often challenges more people to take action. The project is also a good way to welcome new comers. At the same time, you may find new friends with similar hobbies. 

⑤A two-month summer vacation isn't that long, but it's enough to make a difference. 

Orion Jean is a 10-year-old boy from Fort Worth, Texas. He is making a difference in the world with his acts of kindness. And these acts may change the lives of people he has helped. 

It all began after a student kindness competition last year where he gave encouraging words to share about taking the first step. "Kindness is a virtue(美德)we can all have, if we are willing to, "he said. "So why not start today? Because right now, it's what we need more than ever. "

With the $500 prize money he won, Orion donated toys to a local children's hospital. Next, he helped prepare 100, 000 meals for families in Texas. And now he wants to give books to kids who may not have them and plans to collect 500, 000 books in a "Race to Kindness"

Kherri Jean, Orion's mother, wrote on her Facebook page on July 31 that Orion had already collected over120, 000 books. "Today was one of my favourite days!" she said. "We had a'Race to Kindness' free book fair for children and their parents. It was so great to see kids looking for books they like and taking them home!"

And even if he hasn't met the goal of 500, 000 books, Orion has done far more to put books into the hands of poor children than most. "It's all about my moral responsibility(道德责任)to help people, " Orion said. "You know, it's my responsibility to be able to see these people who need help know that I can help them. "
