• 1、In 2017, a famous painting called A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains was on show at the Palace Museum in Beijing. This 900-year-old artwork attracted (吸引) lots of people. Among them was Gui Haowen, then a 16-year-old high school student.

"Taking a clear photo in thoseconditions is difficult," Gui said. But she didn't give up. She tried to be creative. For example, when she took a photo of a silver bowl, she used the shadows (阴影) to make it look like an ink painting.

Gui didn't just take photos. She also studied the history of cultural relics. By understanding their stories, she could take better photos of them. Gui visited around 60 museums and took countless pictures. Whenever she travelled to a new city, a trip to the museum was always at the top of her list.

  • 19、It was a hot sunny summer day. A tired man was walking through a desert. He lost his way and had no more water with him. He felt helpless and thought he would certainly die if he could not meet his thirst (口渴)。

Suddenly, he saw a small house not far away. He could not believe his eyes but he decided to walk closer to have a look.

The small house was abandoned (废弃的), but had a hand pump (泵) inside. "How lucky!" the man thought. However his over-excitement soon came down when he saw no water coming out of it. As he was about to leave, he noticed a bottle of water in the corner of the room. And there was a piece of paper under that bottle. It said, "Use the water to start the pump. Don't forget to fill this bottle. "

What should he do now? He stopped and thought for a moment. He could simply drink that bottle of water and save his life at once. But, in that case (既然那样), he would not be able to carry any water on his way ahead. Also, no one else would turn up there to get a drop to save his life. But if he chose to follow the instruction of the paper and that didn't work, he would simply die.

In any case, he had to take a risk—sooner or later. He closed his eyes and picked the second choice finally. To his great pleasure, cool clear water came out of the pump in a glugglug noise. He drank it like a thirsty cow, refilled (再装满) the bottle and put it back in the corner. Besides, he added some words on the paper, "Believe me; it works."

He also refilled his own water bottles, rested for half an hour, and started his journey once again with a smile on his face.

Nature is full of wonderful plants and animals that are connected to our lives in many different ways.

    Nature's Gifts for Humans

Nature doesn't just look nice—it also gives us many important things. Many plants give us food directly, like apples from apple trees and rice from rice fields. For example, silkworms (蚕) make silk, and then we use silk to make soft and beautiful clothes.

    Useful and Long-lasting Plants

Redwood trees can grow to over 100 meters tall and weigh hundreds of tons. Bamboo grows really fast and can be made into many things, like chairs, baskets, and musical instruments. In some Asian countries, people often plant ginkgo trees. These trees can live for thousands of years, and their leaves are even used to make some kinds of medicine.

    Small Animals, Big Helpers

Small animals play a big role too. Butterflies with colorful wings help flowers by carrying pollen from one to another. Bees make honey in their honeycombs, which people love to eat. Frogs are helpful too because they eat insects that feed on crops (庄稼). A frog can eat thousands of bad insects each year! This helps farmers grow healthy food for us all.

    Small Wonders in Nature

When we go for a walk in nature, we might see mushrooms under leaves or lotus flowers in the lakes. If we look closely enough, we might also find wild strawberries growing in the grass or pretty roses by the roadside.

All of these plants and animals are connected in the ecosystem. This is why we must protect nature.

    A. This process called pollination helps plants make seeds (结籽).

    B. However, not everyone understands their importance in the world.

    C. They help clean the air and are used to build houses.

    D. Let's explore some of these amazing connections!

    E. Some animals also provide (提供) us with useful things.

    F. Without them, our planet would lose its balance.
