On a December morning in 2024, Zhang Yuheng, a junior high student from Bao' an, was on his usual way to school when he saw an elderly man fall on the sidewalk. Remembering the first-aid skills he had learned from both school and his parents, he rushed over and immediately began to perform CPR (心肺复苏) on the elderly man while calling out to passers-by for help to call  120. The situation was dangerous, but Zhang remained calm and focused. He kept doing CPR until the ambulance(救护车) came.

Zhang's story is more than just a single good deed. It highlights the importance of popularizing first-aid knowledge among teenagers. His school has long included safety education in its courses. Zhang believes that"micro-civilization" is the light of human nature that shines  in small acts, from saving a life to not littering. He hopes his experience will encourage more young people to  learn practical  skills and  lend a helping hand whenever they can.

On November 26,2025, a serious fire broke out (爆发) in Hung Fuk Court, TaiPo, Hong Kong. The fire grew fast inside the building, making it a dangerous place in just a few 1 . Firemen 2 right away, fighting the thick smoke and high heat 3 . They  searched  every  room carefully, never 4 anyone in danger.

Then Farmer John and Farmer Bob met in the middle, taking each other's hands."I'm(terrible) sorry for what I have said and done. We should be good to each other," said Farmer Bob.

You are probably familiar with the saying:  An apple a day keeps the doctor away.

The research chose fruit flies(果蝇), as they share many genes(基因) with humans. The fruit flies were either fed normally or had an apple extract(浓缩物) added to their diet.

It turned out that those fruit flies that were given apple extract lived about 55 days— five days longer than the flies that were normally fed..

According to the result, the researchers believed that the antioxidants(抗氧化剂) in the apple extract helped clean up dangerous chemicals that cause illnesses, as well as aging.

 They discovered that those who regularly ate apples were 20 percent less likely to suffer heart illnesses and stroke.

The apples' genetic code(遗传密码) was discovered recently. Researchers are already using the information to grow a kind of apples full of antioxidants that can keep eyes and joints healthy and protect humans against heart illnesses and cancer. The researchers keep studying apple DNA. The extra genes allowed the apple to get used to worse conditions.

"Homestay is a form of study abroad program. It allows the visitor to rent a room from a local family to better understand the local lifestyle. It also helps to improve the visitor's language ability," said a teacher during a school meeting last term."Students who wish to learn more about foreign cultures or to get foreign experience should join this kind of holiday.I am sure you won't be disappointed(失望的)."

After this special meeting, I always thought about this kind of holiday. Last month, Ihad a chance at last to go on such a holiday with some of my schoolmates and we went to London, a place where I had wanted to go since years ago.

As we were still young, we had a group leader who planned things for us and looked after us. After we got to London, we went to stay with different families. I was lucky that my host family was a white couple who had a daughter about my age. They treated me as a daughter of their family during my stay there. They were interested in me and I learnt a lot of things from them, too.

The holiday was filled with activities every day. After breakfast, a local teacher would come to take us in his car. Then we would have classes or go on a sight-seeing trip to different places of interest like the Big Ben, the London Bridge, and the Buckingham Palace.We would go back to our own homes after the activities.

The holiday was a valuable experience for me. I enjoyed every minute of it. Yet, time really flew fast. Three weeks later, we had to leave"home" for Hong Kong.

Su Su is a 16-year-old Beijinger. She studies at the High School Affiliated to Renmin University. She has just published her first book, The Enigma of the Universe.

The Enigma of the Universe tells a story of a girl called April. One day she meets an alien boy named Kaka. Kaka takes April on a journey into the universe. Later April finds out a big secret about Kaka.

What's special about this book? It's a book written in both Chinese and English. Su wrote the book when she was 14 years old. She was influenced by the book Sophie's World and the movie The Truman Show. Sophie is a girl who is interested in philosophy (哲学).Truman's life is run by television.

These stories gave Su an idea for her own book. She decided to write it in English."My English teacher asked us to write something," says Su,"I thought I'd write about my idea."Su spent a whole summer vacation writing the story."Sometimes I had to stop because I couldn't find the right words," says Su."I used the dictionary all the time."

After finishing the English novel, Su had another idea. She decided to turn it into Chinese. The job took her just a few days."It was easy because Chinese is my mother language," she says.

Su says her story is"a mixture of philosophy and detective story and science fiction"."My classmates and I have turned it into a DV play," says Su."I wrote the play and I played April. We will show it in our school soon!"

An old saying goes,"When in Rome, do as the Romans do." I learned the meaning of this when I studied in Russia.

One day I1 some of my Chinese friends to a famous local restaurant in Moscow.My guests and I were excited from visiting Red Square and happy about our meeting. We chatted 2 until the waiter told me that we were talking too loud. We turned our voices lower. But this didn't last long. The waiter came over to us two more times with the same 3 .

How bad an impression we must have left on the local people! In China, it's natural and 4 for a host to make a lively atmosphere (气氛). However, in Russia and western countries, having a meal in a public place means you must 5 your voice low. You need to be polite to others.

 she returned four weeks later, she reported she felt a bit better, and the pain in her back and legs had been reduced. "And I lost five pounds. I feel much (easy), " She said excitedly. Returning eight weeks later, Lynn reported, "Changes (has) been clear. " She had lost 20 pounds and her energy was much improved, "I get ready for (walk) every day. " She kept walking for miles and her craving(渴望) for sugar was also disappearing. She felt she could be in control of her eating. 

What is your first memory of being in the kitchen? Perhaps it's making cookies with a grandparent or preparing a great meal for a special celebration. Not everyone is going to be a great cook as it requires time and patience. However, it certainly can be an excellent hobby. 

Cooking can reduce stress and add happiness. Like other creative hobbies, it allows you to practice your imagination, try new things and show your personality(个性).

Cooking is a great way to learn about different cultures and taste your way around the world. For example, pizza, lasagna and pasta bring you to Italy, sushi provides a taste of Japan, and tacos take you to Mexico. 

Cooking also brings people together. If you enjoy cooking, inviting a few friends over to enjoy an evening together around food can bring a lot of fun. Sitting down to eat with friends and family builds a strong connection.

Bertha: Just call me Miss Bertha or Bertha. 

Me: Okay, sorry about that. So, you' ve been on Earth for about a week now. What have been your biggest disappointments or challenges so far?

Bertha: It's not the worst planet I' ve ever been to. Mercury(水星) was much worse. But the aliens—oops, I mean humans, have been unkind. The family I'm staying with, for example, were nice at first. But now they roll their eyes whenever I open my mouth to say anything. They' re not interested in any of my stories. And I think they may be trying to avoid me. Worst of all, they make me wash my own dishes and bathe myself. They' re so rude. 

Me: Oh, um. . . wow. That's just. . . 

Bertha:I am used to having high standards when I choose where to stay. I have stayed with presidents on other planets. And they all adored(崇拜) me and begged me not to leave. But I gave this human family a chance to host me. I mean, really, they should be grateful that I selected them to wash my clothes and cook my meals and entertain(款待) me. 

Me: Well, what you' re saying is surprising, Bertha. Do you think it's possible that this family just wants you to be a good guest?

Bertha: Why are you not agreeing with me? If you were smarter, you'd agree with me. Everyone on Zadernol is smarter than the smartest person on Earth. Earth is below me. 

Me: You know what, Bertha? I'm starting to see why you' re so unhappy here on Earth. You' re just a boastful(自夸的), spoiled alien. 

After the birth of my second child, I got a job at a restaurant. Having worked with an experienced waitress for a few months, I was 1 to wait tables on my own. All went 2 that first week. When Saturday night came, I was luckily given the table not far from the kitchen. 3 , I still felt it a little hard to carry the heavy trays(托盘). 

Before I knew it, the restaurant was full of people. I moved slowly, minding every step. I remember how 4 I was when I saw the tray stand(支架) near the tables; it looked different from the one I was 5 on. It had nice handles, which made it 6 to move around. I was pleased with everything and began to believe I was natural at this job.

Pupils spend more time at school than they spend with their parents. So communication between them can be difficult. Parents spend the whole day  work and they  come  home  in  the  evening.  Then  they  hardly talk  with  or pay  attention  to   children. And it will be worse  parents work in another town. Parents and children only spend weekends together. This is bad because we know how important  communication  is  to  people,  especially  to  children.   To  grow  up  (healthy), children need to learn (communication). That is why I think school is more important in forming (塑造)(children)characters.

First, school is a place where children can learn how to read and write. They can have good conversations learn good manners from teachers. School is also the place where they can meet other pupils and learn how to  communicate with  (other).

(two), children can find out what it means to work in a team every day. Teachers show children how important it is to get information. The things children learn at school help them make important (decide) in later life.

A student is studying British English. He wonders: Can I have a talk with Americans?Can they catch me? Learners of English often ask-what are the differences between British English and American English? How important are these differences?

Certainly, there are some differences between British English and American English.There are a few differences in grammar. For example, speakers of British English say"in hospital" and"Have you a pen?" Americans"in the hospital" and"Do you have a pen?"Pronunciation(发音) is sometimes different. Americans usually sound the"r" in words like"car" and"farm". Some speakers of British English do not sound the"r" in these words.There are differences between British English and American English in spelling and vocabulary. For example,"colour" and"honour" are British English spellings."Color" and"honor" are American English spellings.

Do you yawn(打哈欠)? There are about 20 reasons that scientists think are possible for yawning after research. They do not know exactly why yawning happens, but they know many facts about yawning.

We know that everyone yawns in the same way. First you open your mouth slowly. Your mouth stays open for about five seconds. You take in a lot of air and then push it out. Then you quickly close your mouth. We also know that yawning is contagious. When you see someone yawn, you yawn, too.

Many people say they yawn because they are bored or tired. That might be true. People do often yawn before they sleep and after they wake up. However, we know that people also yawn when they are excited or nervous. Olympic runners, for example, often yawn before a race. Why is that? Scientists found that a yawn can help a warm brain cool down.

Some scientists believe that yawning makes you notice things more quickly. When you yawn, you breathe deeply. You also stretch (强化) the muscles(肌肉) in your face, mouth,and neck. Your eardrums stretch, too. Maybe this helps you to be quicker to notice things.

In some countries, people think yawning is not nice. People put their hands over their mouths to cover a yawn. In other countries, people think yawning is healthy. They think that opening the mouth very big can let good things in. When they breathe out, they think that bad things go out of the body with the air.

Scientists do not spend much time studying yawning. That is probably because yawning does not hurt. It is just something we do.

A young woman was driving alone through the country. It 1 dark and raining.Suddenly she saw an old woman by the side of the road, holding her hand out as if she needed a lift. She stopped the car and opened the door.

A new library opened last month in Norway. But it may be a little hard for you to visit.It is 150 meters under the ground. It is inside  old mine(矿井) on the island of Svalbard. The island is about 1,000 km away  the North Pole(北极).

The library is called The World Arctic Archive. In fact, it's not (make)for people to visit. It is (protect) the world's most important books from(nature) disasters(灾害) and wars. Some people also call (its) the"doomsday(世界末日) library".

According to the company that (build) the library, Svalbard was the best place to build it."Deep in the permafrost(永冻土层), it's about minus 10 (degree)," the company told The Verge."In this environment, the books can last for(much) than 500 years."

So far, three countries-Norway, Mexico and Brazil (put) books in the library. The Brazilian Constitution(宪法) is one of the books.

Being an orphan(孤儿) is difficult; however, being an animal orphan can be deadly.

This season, the Volunteers for Wildlife Rehabilitation(野生康复) Center in Locust Valley took in six young red-tailed hawks (鹰). If we could get these birds back with their parents, they would have a better chance of surviving. However, we couldn't find their nests or parents.

But there was another way to help them: foster(寄养的) parenting. But we must place the orphans with other adult pairs before nesting season ended in early July. It's not always easy. Hawk nests are often 40 or 50 feet high in trees. What's more, not all birds will accept foster chicks. So we paid close attention to the research by experts before moving chicks.

That day, we happily knew of a nest that was still active at Bethpage State Park! There was one chick in the nest. And the young bird was going to fly but was still in the nest and being fed.

So we decided to move one of our orphan birds. I drove the bucket truck to the nest tree;Lauren, my workmate, held our chick. And up we three went in the bucket. We worked fast,for the wild parents might be back soon, and the female hawk could be aggressive!

To make sure the adults had accepted their new child, I came by later in the day and the next morning. Oh, they had! The chick was just fed up and the adult female hawk sat nearby,staring at me closely.

The results were so encouraging and we tried it again! A week later , we successfully placed another chick in the same nest.

The adult hawks now had three children to care for, one theirs and two foster chicks. It was heartwarming to see the two animal orphans living in their new loving family!
