Why Should We Learn Body Language?

In English classes, we spend lots of time learning grammar and new words. We work hard to improve our reading and listening skills.  In fact, body language is very important.

As the old saying goes, "Actions speak louder than words."  For example, we can just shake our heads when we want to say "No".

Body language can help us stress (强调) what we are saying. It can help us show our true feelings. Moreover, body language can help us find out if someone is lying.  Body language is important in our personal lives.  When you are leaning forward (前倾) in a conversation, it means you are interested in the topic. Listening without any expression (表情) means you are not interested in what your friends are saying.

 The results of the study shows more than 70% of our messages are sent through body language. Sometimes, body language is more accurate (精准的) than the words we use, so it is very important for us to learn body language.

The eyes are the window of the soul (灵魂). Eye language can express different feelings. People from English-speaking countries have more eye contact when they are in conversation. When Americans are talking, they usually look at each other. But there are many rules about eye language: Whether to look at the other speaker or not; when it is the time to look, how long they can look; who they can look at and who they can't. All these have different meanings.

Americans put great importance on the time and the way of eye contact. In ordinary conversation, they will look at each other about one minute and then they will look away. Too long eye contact will make people feel uncomfortable. Once some Americans had a trip to a foreign village and the local people stared (盯) at them. The Americans were angry and thought the local people were not friendly. In fact, it was natural and local area. They were just curious (好奇的).

People who like each other have more eye contact than people who dislike each other. Women usually communicate with more eye contact. If two Americans stare at each other, it shows they are close friends. In North America, the children have learned to look at the other speaker in the eye. If they don't, they are thought to be unconfident.

When people communicate, they use body language more than words. People's body language shows important information just like speech does. When someone lies with their words, their body language often tells the truth. The next time you wonder if someone is telling you the truth, try watching their hands.

A person who is being honest will usually turn one or both of their palms (手掌) towards the other person. If a person is beginning to "open up" or share important information, you may notice them turn their palms towards you. Like most body language, this unconscious (无意识的) gesture usually gives the other person the feeling that the speaker is speaking honestly.

When people lie, they tend to hide their palms by putting their hands behind their back or holding them. Others will keep their hands in their pockets if they are lying or trying to hide information. Salespeople are sometimes trained to watch out for this specific example of body language when a person is saying that they can't afford a product or service. Sometimes professional liars try to use open-palm gestures to fool others. But a careful listener may tell it is a lie through their body language such as lack of eye contact and touching the nose.

Research has also suggested that if people normally turn their palms to face their listeners, they tend to be more honest themselves. If you want people's honesty, talk to them and ask them questions while keeping your palms turned out. This will put pressure on the people you are talking to.

Human body language, emotion, and communication are directly connected. By showing that you are honest, with your palms towards people, your body language pushes others to tell you the truth.

Sign language is a kind of body language. Body language includes eye contact, walking postures, standing postures and gestures (手势). Body language can express all kinds of thoughts and feelings. Different cultures have different body language. Here are some common gestures in different cultures.

In China, a thumb-up sign is used to praise someone for being "good", "great" and "smart". In America, a thumb-up sign means "It's good" or "It's OK" while a thumb-down sign means the opposite (相反的). ____ For example, in Japan, that also means "man", "your father" and "the highest". In South Korea, it also means "the chief", "one's own father", "minister" and "captain". In Australia, the United States, Mexico and other countries, it means "the fate of prayer (祈祷的命运)". As for French people and Indians, this gesture can be used when asking for a ride.

Point with your forefinger (食指). It is very impolite in Europe and America. British and American people make a circle with the thumb and forefinger and the other three fingers keep straight, which means "Excellent".

Put out your forefinger. In the United States, it's used to ask someone to wait; French people ask for an answer by using this gesture; in Myanmar, it means "please"; in Singapore, it shows something or someone is the most important.

Hold out your forefinger and middle finger and make the "V" word. "V" is the first letter of victory (胜利), so it means "victory" in Britain, France and other countries. But in Serbia, the gesture stands for "heroism" and in the Netherlands, it stands for "freedom".

Besides, the "OK" sign means "money" in Japan while it means bad behavior in Latin America.

It's good to share your feelings with others, your feelings are good or not. It can  you to get closer to others. But how can you share your feelings? you should focus on your feelings. You can keep your feelings in your head by them down on the paper or even by drawing pictures.What troubles you? Does it make you sad or angry? Do you have this emotion only once or many times? When you do this, it might help you to remember something and think about how it makes you  .Then you can say "I feel sad because my friend didn't play with me. "or "I feel so 6.

 with my classmates...". Do you know why you should talk about your feelings? you always keep your feelings inside, especially sadness and nervousness, they can even make you sick. But if you talk with someone, like your mother or father, you will feel much  .Your parents want to know what is  in your life because they love you. However, if you don't want to talk with  ,talking with your friends is also a good way.
