Salted fish is a common food that is popular in the south of China.It is chewy ( 有嚼劲 的 )and it adds a salty flavour to other dishes.But eating too much salted fish can cause cancer, according to the China Food and Drug Administration.

Salted fish is produced with a large amount of salt,which later turns into nitrites (亚硝酸 盐)."When nitrites reach our stomachs,they turn into another kind of chemical that can cause cancer",Huang Yufang,from the Cancer Centre of Guangzhou Medical University,told Xinhua News Agency.

So does this mean we can't eat salted fish any more?

"People don't need to worry too much.It has to do with how often you eat certain foods and how much of them you eat,"Huang said."If you really like eating salted fish,you can eat a small amount once or twice a month.You should also eat more fruit and vegetables that are rich in vitamin C,as this can help prevent the formation( 形成)of nitrites."

In fact,many of the foods we often eat are thought to cause cancer,such as pickles( 咸菜), certain fried foods and even red meat like pork,lamb and beef.Although these foods may cause cancer,it doesn't mean that a person will get cancer just from eating them,according to the World Health Organization.Cancer is caused by many different factors(因素),such as one's genes( 基 因),environment,lifestyle and eating habits."As long as one has a balanced diet,one doesn't need to completely avoid cancer-causing food,"Fang Yu,a doctor from the Beijing Cancer Hospital,told People'sDaily.

Long long ago, the State of Qi was very strong, but later it became weaker. Yan Zi was a wise adviser, so the king of Qi sent him to the State of Chu to build friendly relations. 

The king of Chu knew Yan Zi was very short. He tried to make fun of Yan Zi about his height. When Yan Zi arrived, the guard told him to enter through a small gate. Yan Zi didn't get angry. "Only a state of dogs welcomes visitors with a gate for dogs. I come to visit the State ofChu. This gate isn't for me, " Yan Zi said. Then the guard had to let him go through the main gate. 

The king of Chu was unhappy with what Yan Zi said. He tried another way to shame Yan Zi. 

 "Why did Qi send someone like you? Doesn't Qi have anyone better?" the king asked. "When Qi visits a great king,it sends the best ambassador(使臣).I'm the worst.That's why I'm here,"Yan Zi replied calmly. 

Just then, the guards brought a thief to the king. The thief was from Qi. "Haha! Yan Zi, is Qi a state of thieves?" asked the king with a laugh. 

Yan Zi replied, "Orange trees growing south of the Huai River produce big and sweet fruits, while those growing north of it produce small and sour fruits. The environment makes the fruits grow differently. People in Qi are honest and kind, but here they steal. What made the man become a thief here?"

In the end, the king smiled and said to Yan Zi, "I was wrong about you and your state!"
