Litter is a big problem around the world. It can end up in rivers and lakes where it pollutes the water. In theUK, two million pieces of rubbish are dropped every day. Harlee,6, from the UK, is thought to be younger than any other litter-picker in his country. After Harlee noticed lots of rubbish near his local fast food restaurants, he decided to pick up waste in his spare time. His efforts are having an impact (巨大影响).

Young Plastic Hero

Plastic is used to make many things we use every day. When these things are thrown away, some of them end up in the ocean. The plastic does harm to animals and plants in the ocean. Tony,13, from Canada, set up the PlasticMoney Shop when he was six years old. People can trade their single-use plastic for free rice, school things or a young tree in the shop. The unwanted rubbish is turned into school chairs and roof(屋顶) materials for houses."The goal of my project is to take every single-use plastic away from our planet," explains Tony.

Young Tree Hero

Trees are necessary for our planet. They clean the air, provide a home for wildlife and keep our drinking water safe. But in 2022, planet Earth lost 66,000 square kilometres of forest worldwide. Ellyanne,14, from Kenya(肯尼亚), decided to change that. She began planting trees when she was four years old. In 2017, she started an activity called Children With Nature to show other kids how they can make a difference in their own area. So far, she has planted more than 250,000 trees around the world. "No matter how old or young you are, you can start making a difference," says Ellyanne.

A lot of work is still needed to protect the earth. If more of us can be like these young people, it will certainly make life better for everyone.

Tan sheep

Ningxia is (know) for Tan sheep. Grass and (leaf) are their favourite food. Tan sheep are treasures all over. The sheep meat tastes delicious. The soft wool(羊毛) is perfect for making sweaters, scarves  gloves.

Two special plants

Goji berry(枸杞) and liquorice(甘草) are two special plants in Ningxia. They are both (wide)used in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Goji berry can help keep eyes healthy. Liquorice is usually used to stop coughing. Goji berry and liquorice are also used for cooking. Local people often put (they) in soup or tea.

Interesting places

Ningxia is full  interesting places to visit. At Shapotou, you can take a sheepskin raft(羊皮筏子)on the Yellow River. For movie fans, Zhenbeibu West China Film Studio is the (good) choice. Chinese movies march towards the world from here. Besides, Helan Mountain is also worth visiting. You can enjoy the beautiful rock paintings and feel close to nature there.

 Lingling is so excited. Her class plans to go on a school trip to the Sand Lake.

There are two kinds of squirrels(松鼠) in the UK: the red squirrel and the grey squirrel. However, the population of red squirrels has become smaller since the last century. This is mainly because grey squirrels have made the life of red squirrels more difficult. Grey squirrels are bigger and stronger, so they are better at competing for food and areas to live. Grey squirrels also carry a virus(病毒). This virus doesn't harm grey squirrels, but it can be dangerous for red squirrels.

However, scientists have developed a system(系统) to help boost red squirrel numbers. And it uses artificial intelligence(AI). AI is a computer that has learned from experience and can do things that usually need human intelligence. The AI system has been trained to look at photos of squirrels and tell red squirrels from grey squirrels.The aim of the system is to help red squirrels by giving them more food, while stopping grey squirrel population from getting even bigger. To stop grey squirrel population getting bigger, the AI system can offer grey squirrels a kind of special food that stops them having babies. Scientists check the AI has recognized grey squirrels properly.

What's next? Scientists think the AI could also be taught to recognize squirrels by their whiskers(胡须). This could help scientists follow squirrels more closely. For example, if a red squirrel gets sick, the AI could let scientists know quickly.

With the help of AI, the number of red squirrels might rise soon. "This isn't just about squirrels," Dr. Smith,a wildlife scientist, says. "It's also about learning to protect wildlife with technology."

Liu Wei is a Confucius Institute (孔子学院) kung fu teacher at the University of Sierra Leone(塞拉利昂). To help his students learn kung fu well, Liu puts lots of effort into researching and improving his teaching methods. He teaches martial arts(武术) in a creative way, making learning more enjoyable.

Liu Wei' s students were introduced to kung fu through movies and TV shows. Kung fu movies and TV shows are very popular among them. That's where Liu Wei has got his new ideas of teaching. He uses movie clips(片段)in class to help students learn kung fu better. "Martial arts classes should not be just about martial arts skills," Liu said . He also teaches students the Chinese language and other knowledge he considers necessary for their overall martial arts development. He encourages his students to take part in all kinds of cultural exchange(交流) activities,including martial arts performances and traditional Chinese festivals.

"I used to think kung fu was just for movies. Now I have a better understanding of its spirit," one of Liu's students, Georgiana, said. After meeting Liu, many students expressed a strong wish to visit China.

So far, Liu has taught nearly 1,000 students. "In the future, I want to build a‘martial arts bridge' between China and Sierra Leone," he said. "I hope more and more people come to China to enjoy the beauty of rich Chinese culture."

The Blind Artist: Seeing the World Through Determination

What would you do if the very thing that defined you—— the thing you loved the most—— was suddenly taken from you?

A Born Artist with a Bright Future

Liam had been drawing since he could hold a pencil. As a child, he would spend hours drawing everything around him. By the time he reached adulthood, he was a rising star in the art world. His paintings were displayed in galleries(画廊), and collectors eagerly bought his works. He was living his dream.

Then, everything changed.

The Day the World Went Dark

One evening, as Liam was driving home from his studio, there was a crash. When he woke up in the hospital,everything was black. The doctor explained,"I'm sorry, Liam… but you' re blind."

Liam's heart sank. Blind? At first, he refused to accept it."This can't be happening," he whispered."I'm an artist. I need my eyes."

Falling Into Despair(绝望)

The following months were the darkest of Liam's life. He refused to leave his house. His paintings sat untouched in his studio, collecting dust.

Whenever someone encouraged him to try something new, he said,"What's the point? I can't paint. I can't see." His soul was drowning in hopelessness.

One day, his best friend, Ava, visited him. She placed a canvas (画布) in front of him, took his hand and placed a textured (有纹理的) fabric on the canvas."Feel this," she said."Art isn't just about sight. It's about expression. Maybe you can find a new way to create."

Learning to See Without Sight

The idea hit him. Could I still create?

One night, alone in his room, he hesitantly(犹豫地) picked up a brush. He let his fingers explore the textures of different materials—— canvas, clay, wood. He tried to tell the difference between them by touching and draw by feeling. The thickness let him"see" the painting. At first, it was hard. His hands trembled, his lines were messy, and his paintings didn' t make sense. But he kept going. He learned to"see" with his hands. Slowly, something unbelievable happened—— he started creating art again.

Proving the World Wrong

When Liam finally showed his new works to Ava, she gasped(倒吸一口冷气). "This is… amazing!"

Word spread(消息传开), and soon,

The exhibition was called"Beyond Sight: The Art of Feeling".

The exhibition was a success, and Liam became an inspiration worldwide. He proved that creativity isn't about what we see— it's about what we feel.

Dezhou red-green porcelain(红绿彩) is a special kind of china. Artists paint red and green designs on it with brushes. The folk art with eye-catching colors and cheerful designs, made for everyday life use,hopes of people in northern China. Dating back to the Song and Jin dynasties, it developed along China' s GrandCanal(大运河), mixing Central Plains and nomadic(游牧的) cultures.

In 2006, it was listed as part of China's National Intangible Cultural Heritage (非遗) officially. This listing made the government and the community start to protect their traditional techniques. Now, there  a lot of training programs and workshops where young artisans learn skills. These skills keep this centuries-old craft alive.

Artisans and researchers are learning to bring back the lost ways of  red-green porcelain. For example, they try to rebuild the old designs and rediscover the ancient glaze formulas(釉配方) again. By doing this, the modern red-green porcelain still has the eye-catching colors and countryside style.

Dezhou red-green porcelain has been shown in many big exhibitions around the world. In 2019, an exhibition  at the China National Museum in Beijing. This showed its historical and artistic value. International museums in Japan and Europe showed this unique Chinese art form  the craft to people all over the world.

Artists mix the traditional red-green porcelain styles with modern designs nowadays. They create decorative vases(花瓶) and tableware with simple designs  by younger buyers. So, this craft remains popular in the market while staying true to its tradition. Also, local businesses use eco-friendly materials to make it. This helps to make less pollution to the environment than ever before.

Up to now, in workshops, Dezhou  up red-green porcelain cultural tourism. Visitors about the craft's history and make pottery here. In schools, pottery classes are offered to help students learn and experience this heritage.

In 2021, a master artisan  the"Outstanding Inheritor of Intangible Cultural Heritage" award,showing the importance of passing down this craft."I  the traditional craft ahead to go global in the future," the master artisan said.

Dezhou red-green porcelain is like a bridge between the past and the future. It is not only a symbol of ancientChinese culture, but also a developing art form which combines tradition and modern creativity.

Scientists have created a soft-bodied robot that's powered by air. The robot doesn't have a computer or a"brain", and yet it can"walk" by . And if it is dropped into water, it swims.

 is this possible? The secret is in the science of how air moves.

Have you ever noticed a"tube dancer" which is used to attract customers? If you have seen a tube dancer flopping around, you will understand it  .

Tube dancers are tall, thin tubes of cloth through which air is pumped (用泵抽送). High pressure from the pumped air fills the tube, making it stand , and then the air flows through faster, making the pressure drop. When this drop in pressure forms a bend in the tube, it causes the tube to fall party(中途) over. The bend makes the pumped air move more , raising the pressure again. The pumped air pushes the bend up until the dancer is pushed up once more.

Air pressure moving a bend along a tube is exactly what drives the robot. The magic happens there are several tubes hooked(固定) up to the same pump. When the air starts to flow the tubes move in different ways. But very quickly, all of these"legs" start to move in exactly the same way, making the robot walk. The robot's speed is controlled by the air pressure.

The researchers built two robots. The first robot had four legs and the air was pumped to it  a hose(软管). Later, the team developed a lighter, two-legged robot that could carry its own battery-powered pump.

There are several remarkable things about the robot. The first is its speed. The robot can cover a distance as long as thirty of its body in a second. That would be like the world's  man, Usain Bolt, running the100-meter race in 1.71 seconds. The robot can also go over uneven (坑洼的) ground. If it bumps into a wall, it turns  help or control.

Because there is no brain, the new invention is really just a machine. So far, the robot has done all the things on its own. Now, scientists are exploring new ways to control the robot and perhaps will give it more

 in the near future.

As time goes by, we believe such technology will play a positive role in achieving a more energy-efficient and eco-friendly future.

In the far areas of western China, educational resources are not as developed as those in the eastern parts. In a program called"Go West" to help bridge the gap, many young volunteers have traveled to these areas, leaving their comfortable urban(都市的) lives behind and choosing to grow alongside the children.  . Since 2003,tens of thousands of university graduates have served in the"Go West" program, in order to offer the children there opportunities for a broader and brighter future. 

At Xinjiang's Xieyite Primary School, Gao Chao came to teach here after graduation. She noticed children here have difficulty in understanding common math problems using examples like"getting on and off the bus". So she changed the content to meet the local needs, using sheep-counting problems instead:"There were a certain number of sheep in the pen, some were let out in the morning, and some came back in the evening. How many are there now?"

Gao Shuxian joined this school in 2023. Seeing most students haven't stepped outside their hometown, she shared her travel photos and videos during breaks. Moreover, in August 2024, she and three other teachers took 12students on a study tour to Beijing. "After this trip, I realized if I study hard now,I will have more choices in the future," a girl called Dilizhada said. —— living in the mountains forever.

Yan, another volunteer teacher at the school, is known among the students as their warm-hearted"big brother".He carefully observes the children's learning habits and pays regular home visits.  . Yan also held a class talk about"how to get along with classmates", teaching kids to help and understand each other.

The volunteer team, averaging 24 years old, was recently honored with the China Youth May FourthMedal—— the highest honor for Chinese youths aged 14 to 40—— for their contributions to ethnic unity and border stability.

Getting hit by lightning is not usually good. But in fact, one tree seems to benefit from the natural reward.

The height and broad head of almendro(杏) trees act as natural lightning rods (避雷针). They not only can survive powerful lightning, but actually attract it. In a thick jungle, such lightning strikes(击中) can even grant the tree a decisive advantage in the competition for survival. Why? Because the lightning will hurt its surrounding"enemies".

The finding comes from a years-long study. Scientists studied lightning's influence on trees and finally wrote a paper to share their new findings in the May New Phytologist.

This scientific team studied and recorded the fate (命运) of 93 trees hit by lightning. Among them were 9almendros. After two years, every almendro tree of the 9 was doing fine. To their surprise, in fact, they were thriving(茂盛的), while 56 percent of the other species(种类) that had been hit are now dead.

Except a few leaves which are not so smooth as before, almendros weren't hurt by lightning. However,scientists observed that the lianas(藤本植物) which grew on them were all burned by the electric shock. These vines(藤蔓) spread everywhere and they are a danger to almendros. At least, they cut off light to the trees that they climb up. They can also steal nutrients(营养) from almendros. And a liana may not climb just one tree. It can send up vines that connect to branches on neighboring different species. So when lightning strikes an almendro, the deadly current(电流) spreads through lianas to neighboring trees and burns them up. This can free up space, light and nutrients for an almendro to grow vibrantly (生机盎然地).

But why were almendros not hurt as other species nearby? Some of the scientists think the reason is that the

tree' s wood has low electrical resistance (阻力). That might let it safely lead the current to the ground without suffering a buildup (积聚) of heat. Others think the structure of the tree' s head may direct electricity away from the branches—— and toward its neighbors. It's really difficult to understand all the biological and physical steps that take place when lightning hits trees. "It would be interesting to be able to say something more on that," scientists noted."We' re all curious how the almendro avoids getting burned by each lightning strike. But we are not sure. So we didn't mention that in the paper."

Carl Allamby started his auto repair business at the age of 19. Over the years it had grown into two shops with11 employees, but Allamby started to expect something more. At first, he thought it must have something to do with

growing his business even further. So, at the age of 34, Allamby enrolled(注册) in a bachelor' s degree(学士学位)in business management.

There was one problem: after taking classes part-time over the next five years, Allamby was told he had to take a biology course to get his degree. "Why do I need to take biology?" he thought.

However, the best influence of this requirement is that it restarted his childhood dream. "I wanted to be a doctor when I was younger," Allamby says. "I lost that dream somewhere through high school and life." He grew up in a poor neighbourhood, and his school didn't offer the advanced science classes. So he had no chance to study at medical school. Instead, Allamby set aside thoughts of becoming a doctor, and chose a realistic career path—— fixing cars, which helped support his family.

But at age 39 a different Carl Allamby walked into that biology class. He was ready to live his dream. With the support of his wife and family he quickly chose not to go to business school and instead took science classes to become a healthcare worker. "Becoming a doctor when I am nearly 50 was crazy. I will become a nurse like my wife," he thought. But Allamby's biology professor stopped him after class one day. "Carl," he said, "you' re like the oldest guy here. What's your endgame?" Allamby said he' d like to become a doctor, but it would be more practical to aim lower.

"Why not a doctor? You have a great talent for the work," the professor said. "I didn' t even see in myself if my professor hadn't told me that," Allamby says.

And so, in 2015, Allamby sold his two shops and started medical school at Northeast Ohio Medical University.In 2019, at the age of 47, Carl Allamby became Dr Carl Allamby. He now works as an emergency medicine doctor at Cleveland Clinic Hillcrest Hospital.

"How many people can do something new at such a late stage in their life?" he asks. "My kids look up to me,my community looks up to me. Whether it's because of my age or my past career—— these are all reasons why Ishouldn't be here. And yet, here I am."

Birds don't have very large brains, but they are super clever!

Recently, researchers in New Jersey discovered the Cooper' s Hawk (库珀鹰) can understand how to use human traffic rules to hunt, so that they hunt more easily and successfully. This was discovered by Vladimir Dinets,who is both an animal expert and a mathematician, and his research was published on May 23,2025, in Frontiers inAnimal Behavior. Other studies have pointed out that birds often use human buildings and vehicles(机动车) to help them hunt, but recognizing traffic lights is a first.

In the winter of 2021 Dinets saw a young Cooper's Hawk standing in a tree near the traffic lights. It flew low with the cover of stopped cars, and disappeared into the front yard across the street. A moment later, it reappeared,catching a sparrow(麻雀). This hunt left a deep impression on Dinets. It seemed to know when the traffic light was red.

Through continued observation(观察), Dinets believes it recognized traffic lights through the buzzi ng sound when the red light was on at a certain time. Also, the hawk knew that sparrows would be at a certain house because the owner put out rubbish every day. So, the hawk used the cars which lined up to get close to the sparrows without being seen, making it easier to catch them.

This is more difficult than imagined.

The Cooper's Hawk can't see its prey(猎物) from the tree. So it has to remember the surroundings(环境) and work out its way. Also, it has to know that some buzzing sounds have something to do with traffic lights. This behavior must come from careful calculations(计算), a great memory, and complex(复杂的) thinking skills. In a word, to have this hunting skill needs a lot of intelligence(智力).

Maybe other animals can do the same, but this Cooper's Hawk is the first wild animal they' ve discovered.

These birds fly through here when migrating(迁徙) in summer and winter. This means the Cooper's Hawk probably learned to do this in just a few days or weeks.

Finally, Dinets also saw a Cooper' s Hawk hunting in the same manner the following winter(2022), and he believes it is the same hawk, now an adult. However, in the summer of the year after that, the sound signal from the streetlight was gone, the people living there moved away, and there were no longer any sparrows there. From then on, until the article was published, Dinets never saw the Cooper's Hawk nearby again.
