①With his bald head, thin body and shy nature, Mohandas Gandhi seemed a kind father. Within this quiet man, however, was a powerful will. His strong beliefs (信仰) in fairness, freedom, kindness and peace carried him through the difficult years and changed nations. Even many years after his death, the man who was called"The Father of India" continues to inspire people around the world. 

②Gandhi was born into a large Hindu family on October 2nd, 1869. His father worked as a local government leader. He often fights with the British who ruled India for the rights of the local people. From him, Gandhi learned to respect(尊重) others and their beliefs. 

③At eighteen, Gandhi went to England to study law. After a few years, Gandhi got his degree and returned to India. One day, while Gandhi travelled by train, he was refused to sit in the first-class car because he was not white. Well-dressed Gandhi explained politely, but the conductor(乘务员) turned a deaf ear to him, threw him off the train and beat him. These events brought the suffering of Indians in South Africa to Gandhi's attention. Later, he did a lot to get the rights for the Indians. Gandhi was put into prison(监狱) several times, but these never stopped his beliefs or actions. In 1947, the British finally ended their rule in India. However, disagreements broke out between Hindus and Muslims. Gandhi worked day and night to solve the problem and reached a number of peace agreements. No one else was able to do this at that time. 

④On January 30th, 1948, Gandhi left the world. His death saddened people everywhere. Hundreds of thousands of people were at his funeral(葬礼). 

⑤His efforts inspired great leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela, and will continue to inspire people for many years to come.
