Ever felt stuck on a math problem, only to solve it after a walk? That's your brain taking a "break" and science says it's more important than you think.
When we focus hard, our brains use a lot of energy. After 45-60 minutes, they start to feel tired, making it harder to concentrate. Taking short breaks, called "mental rests", lets them recharge. But not all breaks are equal: scrolling through phones doesn't count. Why? Because screens keep your brain active, flooding it with new information and stopping it from relaxing.
So what works? Moving your body: a quick jog, stretching, or even just walking around the classroom. Nature helps too — studies show looking at trees or grass for 5 minutes boosts focus by 15%. Another good choice? Daydreaming. Letting your mind wander can spark (激发) creativity, like when a writer gets ideas for a story while staring out the window.
Timing matters too. Experts suggest the "5-5 rule": work for 50 minutes, then rest for 5. Next time you're stuck, try this: set a timer for 5 minutes, step outside, and listen to birds. You might be surprised how much clearer your brain feels when you get back to work—ready to tackle that problem with fresh energy.

① to increase or improve something.
② to make someone feel happier or more confident.
③ to push someone up with your hands.
④ to make a loud noise.
A、① B、② C、③ D、④(4)、What can we infer from the "50-5 rule" in Paragraph 4?A、Students should rest for 5 minutes every hour. B、The longer the break, the better the brain works. C、Working non-stop can lead to bad study results. D、We must set a timer to solve math problems quickly. -

Cities are growing, and green spaces are shrinking. But a new idea — "vertical forests" — is changing this. These are buildings covered with thousands of plants, turning concrete towers into living ecosystems.
The first vertical forest opened in Milan, Italy, in 2014. It has two towers, with over 900 trees and 20,000 smaller plants like bushes and flowers. The plants aren't just for beauty. They absorb carbon dioxide (CO2), the gas that warms the planet, and release oxygen. They also block sunlight, keeping the buildings cool in summer and reducing the need for air conditioning.
But how do the plants survive (存活)? Special systems water them through pipes hidden in the walls. The trees are chosen for their size, so they won't grow too tall and damage the building. Roots are contained in strong pots to prevent them from breaking windows or walls.
Critics say vertical forests are expensive to build and maintain. However, supporters argue the benefits are worth it. In addition to fighting pollution, the forests attract birds and insects, bringing nature back to busy cities. "They show that humans and nature can live together in harmony," says architect Stefano Boeri, who designed the Milan towers.
(1)、What is a "vertical forest"?A、A tower made entirely of concrete. B、A large park in the middle of a city. C、A building covered with many plants. D、A forest where trees grow extremely tall.(2)、What is one benefit of vertical forests mentioned?A、They make buildings look older and more traditional. B、They reduce the need for air conditioning in summer. C、They allow plants to grow much taller than normal. D、They provide free food from fruit trees for people.(3)、What is the main idea of Paragraph 3?A、Why the roots are safe. B、How tall the trees can grow. C、Where the plants are placed. D、How plants live in vertical forests.(4)、What do supporters of vertical forests believe?A、They cost much but bring more good. B、Only large cities can benefit from them. C、They will replace all traditional buildings soon. D、Humans and nature can live together peacefully. -

Noah had never paid attention to the stray cats in his neighborhood. He often walked past them without a second look, focusing only on his own life — schoolwork, video games, and hanging out with friends. He thought caring for small animals was something kind people did, not something he needed to bother with.
One rainy evening, he found a tiny cat trembling under his window. It was weak and could not even stand up. Noah hesitated for a moment, then took it inside quietly. He dried it with a towel, fed it warm milk, and made a soft bed for it. That night, he stayed up late worrying about the cat.
As days passed, the cat got better and closer to Noah. It followed him around the house and curled up on his desk when he studied. For the first time, Noah felt a strong sense of responsibility. He started learning about how to look after stray animals, preparing food and clean water for them every day. He even put up posters to help other stray cats find homes.
His parents were surprised to see his change. "You used to be a boy who only cared about himself," his mom said. "Now you're kind and responsible." Noah smiled. He realized that kindness was not a difficult thing. It started with small actions, and it could warm both others' hearts and his own.
From then on, Noah became a person who noticed and helped the helpless around him. He learned that the greatest happiness in life comes from giving, not receiving.
(1)、What can we infer from Paragraph 1?A、Noah was self-centered before. B、Noah disliked all small animals. C、Noah lived a busy and hard life. D、Noah had no close friends at school.(2)、What was Noah's feeling when he first took the cat home?A、Angry but patient. B、Uncertain but kind. C、Confident and excited. Listening to music, watching movies, reading novels...Which kind of art is your go-to choice for fun? According to a new study, art not only calms your mind but also improves your physical health.
For the first time, scientists in the UK found that art helps the immune (免疫的), endocrine (内分泌的) and nervous systems all at once, said The Guardian. The study included 50 healthy volunteers aged 18 to 40. Half of them went to see real artworks at the Courtauld Gallery in London, while the other half looked at copies of the same paintings in a non-gallery setting. All of them wore health sensors throughout the experiment.
The result showed a 22 percent drop in stress hormones (激素) for the gallery-goers and an 8 percent drop for the other group, according to Art Fund. Signs of inflammation (炎症) also went down by about 30 percent for the gallery group.
It's not just visual art that has such effects. For example, a 2021 Swiss study said that dance reduces stress by improving movement control.
What makes art so powerful? Scientists have different ideas. One, developed by Edward Vessel at the City College of New York, looks to our brain's default mode network (默认模式网络). This network is thought to play a key role in creativity—it usually stays quiet when we pay attention to things around us. But when we enjoy art, this network becomes active.
Although we are still learning how this works, ▲ . According to American Scientist, art therapy was first developed to help traumatized (心理受创的) World War II soldiers express their feelings. Those painful experiences often hurt the parts of their brains that control speech, so traditional talking therapy didn't work well. Since then, art therapy has helped over 650 million people around the world.
Marygrace Berberian, a professor at New York University, said in the university's news in September that number-based studies, like the new UK study, can help more people get art therapy.
(1)、What does the result of the UK study show?A、Young people get more good from viewing art. B、Looking at art copies is of little use for health. C、Painting is the most helpful art for lowering stress. D、Stress went down more for the gallery-goers group.(2)、What does Edward Vessel's theory suggest about art?A、It makes people's memory become better. B、It makes the brain's special network active. C、It makes the brain's usual activity weaker. D、It makes people careless about the outside.(3)、Which of the following is the most suitable for ▲ ?A、Art's power has long been used in treatment. B、Art's power is still doubted by scientists. C、Art's power has been fully understood by scientists. D、Art's power hasn't been used in treatment till now.(4)、How does the writer develop the passage?A、By describing research steps. B、By offering interesting ideas. C、By using many examples. It was a week before I saw Captain Nemo again. Every morning, I noticed fresh air coming into the rooms and I knew that the Nautilus had come to the top. I would go out and see the sunrise.
Then I received a note from Captain Nemo. He invited me and my friends to go hunting with him in the forests of Crescent Island. Ned was excited because he thought there he could find a chance to run away. When I saw Captain Nemo the next day, I asked him why he was so interested in Crescent Island.
