Yang Chen-Ning, a great physicist and Nobel Prize winner, passed away in Beijing on October 18, 2025 at the age of 103. He was a professor (教授) at Tsinghua University and a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Yang was born in Hefei, Anhui Province in 1922. At a very young age, he showed great talent in physics. He attended university in Kunming in his early years and later went to the University of Chicago in the United States for further studies. Yang worked in the USA and made great discoveries in physics. In 1957, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics with Tsung-Dao Lee. Their discovery changed how scientists understand the laws of physics.
Though successful abroad, Yang never forgot his homeland. In 1971, when the US allowed travel to China again, Yang was one of the first Chinese-American scientists to return. For years, he often returned to give speeches and train young talents. In 2003, Yang moved back to Beijing and worked at Tsinghua University. Yang spent his later years developing basic science in China. At Tsinghua University, he encouraged students to think creatively and ask questions. He once said, "Don't just follow what others say—think on your own, and never be afraid to ask ‘why'." He believed that science and education were key to China's future.
In 2015, he gave up his American citizenship (公民身份) and lived in China. He then became a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2017. He called his home "gui gen ju", showing that his life had come full circle. His love for science and motherland made him widely respected (尊重).

In spring, they are like silver rivers, shining brightly in the sun. Summer sees the mountains turn bright green with growing rice. In autumn, the mountains are gold. And in winter, white snow covers them, making them look very beautiful. These changing colors are what the Longji Rice Terraces (龙脊梯田) look like all year round.
The Zhuang and Yao people built the Longji Rice Terraces hundreds of years ago. You might wonder why the Zhuang and Yao people worked so hard to make these terraces. Well, here are the reasons. First, in this area, there were few big, flat (平坦的) pieces of land. By building these terraces, they could get more places to grow things. Second, the flat terraces can catch rainwater on rainy days. This helps stop the soil from being washed away.
In this way, people have worked in harmony (和谐) with nature to make these terraces. Perhaps, it's the most meaningful part. The terraces are in shapes with hundreds of waterways that connect with each other. During the rainy season, rainwater moves down the mountains and into the terraces through these waterways. The sun heats (加热) the water and turns it into vapour. This forms clouds and then rain falls down onto the mountain terraces once again.
Although modern technology can help grow more rice, these terraces still mean a lot to the local people and they pass down the knowledge of taking care of the terraces. So, people today still use the old ways to keep the terraces in good condition. Today, people come from far away to see this great wonder which shows how people work together with nature.
(1)、How does the writer start the passage?A、By telling stories. B、By asking questions. C、By describing sights.(2)、What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?A、What terraces look like in different seasons. B、Why farmers turned the mountains into terraces. C、How people work in harmony with nature together.(3)、Which number shows the underlined word "vapour" in Paragraph 3?
A、① B、② C、③(4)、Why do the local people still keep their ancient farming ways?A、To help the local people produce more rice. B、To satisfy more visitors from all over the world. C、To pass down the knowledge of looking after the terraces.(5)、 What is the main purpose of writing this passage?A、To introduce the history of the terraces. B、To advise people to build more terraces. C、To list the ways of improving technology. -

One day, Andy was on a business trip. While walking past a village, he saw many people busy with their work in a large field. At that moment, a young man who sat by the road caught his attention,
Andy wondered why the young man was free in such a busy season. Then he went up and asked "Have you grown your vegetables?"
The young man shook his head and said, "Not yet! I'm worried about the weather. If there is a storm, my vegetables may be destroyed (毁坏). If it is too cold, the seeds (种子) may not come out from the ground at all. If it is too hot, the seeds may even go bad in the soil."
Andy nodded his head and asked again, "Then, have you grown rice?" The young man thought for a while, and answered, "Not yet. I'm worried about the birds. They may eat the rice. I can't take that risk." Andy was very surprised, "So, what have you grown then?"
The farmer replied, "I haven't grown anything. I am waiting for the best time! I must make sure that nothing is going to destroy my plants."
Of course, the best time never came. And the young man didn't get anything from the field at last.
In our life, many people may have the same problem. They have dreams, but they don't take action because they worry too much about the difficulties in the future. However, if they don't do anything, how can they achieve their dreams?

The Friendship of Yu Boya and Zhong Ziqi
In ancient (古代的) China, there was a famous musician named Yu Boya. He was highly talented in playing the guqin. His music was so beautiful that it could touch people's hearts.
One day, while playing the guqin by the riverside, Yu Boya met Zhong Ziqi. Although Zhong Ziqi was only a woodcutter (伐木者), he was able to understand the feelings and meanings expressed through Yu Boya's music. Zhong Ziqi could tell when Yu Boya was playing for the mountains or waters. This deep understanding helped to build a strong friendship between them. They became close friends who could communicate (交流) through the language of music.
Unluckily, Zhong Ziqi died soon. Yu Boya was really sad. In memory of his dear friend, he broke his guqin, saying never to play it again.
