My Best Friend

Have you ever visited Hukou Waterfall? Hukou Waterfall is always compared to a shining pearl(明珠) in the middle reaches of the Yellow River. 

When the Yellow River runs through mountains to Hukou, the river narrows(变窄) from 300 meters to just over 50 meters. The water suddenly falls into a deep pool. As a result, a wonderful waterfall appears. It seems that the water pours into a big pot, which is how it got the name"Hukou". 

The power of the waterfall is tremendous(巨大的) when it falls, so it is hard for you to get close to the main waterfall. Looking from far away, you can enjoy the amazing fog-covered water. The beauty cannot be described in words. You cannot know unless you visit it in person. 

There are four wonders of Hukou, "smoking in water", "colourful bridge to the sky", "dragons playing with waves" and"thunder generated from valley stream". The waterfall flies straight down with water splashing(溅), clouds and mist rising. Under the sunlight, you will see a rainbow hanging over the waterfall. The poem"Chant to Hukou" written by Zhang Yingchun in the Ming Dynasty describes the beauty of"colourful bridge to the sky". 

The view of Hukou Waterfall changes according to the seasons. So you can enjoy its special beauty from spring to winter. 

There are more than 1, 400 species of bats in the world. (science) JeremyColeman has a team that has done a lot of research(研究) on bats. 

Bats usually get enough sleep during the day and then fly  night. That's because the bright light of the day makes their eyes (comfortable). Bats feed on (in-sect). Some insects are bad for farmlands, but some bats are good for farmlands. (actual), bats help Americans save a lot of money on insect control(控制). 

But unluckily, bats are facing  serious problem. Many people usually think that bats are bad and scary. So they hunt a lot of bats every year. This has made the (protect) of bats so difficult. However, the good thing is that many countries are taking (act) to change this condition(状况). They put up lots of bat boxes in the trees. They also call on people in different places (save) the bats. Coleman and (he) team are also trying to find different ways to help bats. 

However, we should also remember one thing: bats are will animals, not pets. We shouldn't touch bat s randomly(随便地). 

A messy(凌乱的) bedroom may cause some health problems. When you live in a messy room, bad feelings may be with you. 

 Here are some ways to help you clean the house and feel better. 

Talk with your parents and work together. A messy room can make you feel uncomfortable and you may not know where to start cleaning.  You can start by deciding what to do and who will do the things. 

Make cleaning a family activity. Each person can clean his or her own room, and then meet in the shared space of the house to continue the cleaning activity together. 

Play music when cleaning. Each family member can share his or her favourite songs to play when tidying up. 

Clean one place at a time. Give yourself 10 minutes a day to clean one place in your room. It might take longer. 

In a word, messy rooms and bad feelings often go together, so it's important for you to keep the room clean and tidy. 

Humans are a kind of wonderful species(物种). We build houses to live in. We communicate with each other, which makes us work in teams. We live well in most places on earth. When we face problems, we can come up with many ways to solve them. We can grow our own food. These abilities make us different from most kinds of animals. 

There is another kind of animal, however, that can do all these things and more. In fact, these animals can also carry things weighing almost twenty times their body weight. They' re ants!

Ants have been on earth for about 1 00 million years. You have probably seen their home in the corner of walls. And they live on all the land on earth except Anterctica. They use their pheromones(信息素) to communicate with one another, and they work together to build home or carry food. 

Like humans, they also farm. And ants raise aphids(蚜虫) that can produce a special thing like water. The ants take care of aphids and keep them nearby so ants can drink the thing at any time. 

Of course, ants are also different from humans. Ants mostly live underground. Their home is made up of special tunnels. Ants usually live for only about three months, while humans can live for several tens of years. 

Pasang lives in a village in Nepal. There are always many foreign tourists. Visitors always stop at his mum and dad's teahouse, so his parents need his help to get everything ready every day!

One day, Pasang noticed a boy in the visitor group. Pasang put a teacup in front of him. The boy took his cup and smiled. Pasang had a talk with him, and he found that they had many common hobbies, like playing foot-ball and collecting stamps(邮票). Pasang showed the boy around the village. Then the boy left for the Qomolang-ma Base Camp in Nepal. 

The rest of the day was busy! Later the weather turned bad. Pasang's father came in, looking worried. "Astorm is coming down the mountain. Those visitors on the trail(路线) to the mountain might get lost!"

Pasang felt afraid when he heard this because things could be more terrible if someone got lost in this weather!

His father called the men in the village together to go to the mountain and make sure the visitors on the trail were right. Pasang insisted on(坚持) coming along because he wanted to make sure the boy would be - OK. 

After hiking up the trail for an hour or more, he finally found the boy. It looked as if he had fallen and hurt his leg! The young tourist was glad to see Pasang! He smiled at Pasang and made a gesture(手势) as if he thanked him. They both laughed happily!

Travelling can be an exciting way to learn about more places and different cultures, and it can also enrich your life experience. But how can you have a meaningful trip? Here are the steps. 

Last summer, my family and I went to Zhangjiajie, a beautiful place in Human. We really had a good time!It was the first time that I had visited there, but it was the most 1 trip. 

On the first day, we went to climb Tianmen Mountain. 2 we walked along the small road, we met a group of old people. They were climbing the mountain and everyone seemed to be over 60 years old. They looked a little tired, but they said they decided to get to the 3 .

Today, interviewed a retired fisherman, Mr. Cheung. He kindly agreed to let me interview him at his home in Sham Shui Po. he was old, he was still very strong and alert. He stood up (quick) and shook my hand. However, he could not hear very clearly so I had to speak much (loud).

He told me about some of his experiences a fisherman. He had to work hard in many dangerous (condition). He was so good at telling stories .

I enjoyed listening to his experiences carefully. He talked happily about things. For example, he used(be) caught in a storm, and he still remembered meeting unbelievable ship.

After the interview, I went to a nearby cafe and wrote up my notes with (excited) because I was full of ideas in my mind. Then it was time to go home. I had to walk quickly because it (rain) at that time and I didn't have an umbrella!

It was the summer of 1968. I was a teenager, but I remember everything1 , like it happened yesterday.

Blacksmithing is one of the oldest jobs in the world. Its history goes back over 3,500 years. Now, when we think of a blacksmith, we might picture someone putting shoes on horses. But that's a farrier (钉蹄师)! Farriers and blacksmiths are different, and farriers even learn skills from blacksmiths.

Blacksmiths work with iron and steel. They melt (融触化), shape, and join these metals(金属)to make things like gates, tools, and railings. They heat the metal in a forge (a hot place) or a furnace. When the metal gets hot enough, it softens and melts. Then the blacksmith can turn it into any shape.

◇The Anvil (铁砧)

Next, the blacksmith puts the hot metal on an anvil. An anvil is a big, flat-topped metal block (金属板).The hot metal sits there. The blacksmith uses the hammer (锤子)to make it into the right shape before it cools and becomes hard.

◇What to wear

Blacksmiths hardly wear uniforms, but they always wear a leather apron. This apron keeps their clothes clean and protects them from hot metal burns.

You can learn this job by working with an experienced blacksmith or studying in school. You can also work and learn the same time which is called an apprenticeship(学徒制).

◇Skills needed

Blacksmiths lift and work with heavy iron and steel, so they need to be strong. They must finish projects without giving up halfway.

◇Where they work

Blacksmiths work in factories or workshops. They have big open fire pits to melt metals. These coal fires can reach high TEmpeRatUre-20 Times Hotter than boiling water (100℃)!
