Tsung Dao Lee, a famous Chinese American physicist, passed away on August 4, 2024, at the age of nearly 98. 

Lee was considered one of the greatest physicists of the 20th century. In 1957, at only 31, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics with his coworker for discovering that subatomic particles (亚原子粒子) aren't always symmetrical (对称的). 

When Lee was in high school, the war between China and Japan forced him to give up his studies. It was during this time that he fell in love with physics through science books he came across.  Although he didn't finish high school, Lee still got into the National Chekiang University(now Zhejiang University) in1943. Because of the ongoing war, he went to the National Southwestern Associated University in Kunming in1945 and then he got a chance to study in America.

After finishing his PhD at the University of Chicago, he joined Columbia University in 1953 as an assistant professor(助理教授). After retiring(退休) at age 84, he still kept working.

 He started a program for choosing talented Chinese physics students to do PhD studies in America. Between 1979 and 1989, nearly 1,000 young students were trained in the program, and they have become key people in many fields in China, including physics, chemistry and finance. His spirit of hard work and achievements in science will be remembered forever.

Turning Red was by Domee Shi, a Chinese Canadian. Her films have impressed(使……印象深刻) the world with interesting stories, amazing creativity and profound(深刻的) . In this film, she uses some of her   experiences to shape the story.

It's about the story of Meilin who is a Chinese-Canadian girl. Meilin is energetic and likes asking questions. As she grows up, an old curse(魔咒) put on her family   . She becomes a big red panda whenever she experiences strong  . She finds growing up is really painful. This  drives her to a decision: She must find a way to balance her schoolwork and life.

Meilin's mother experienced the same problem when she was young. However, the mother is very strict with Meilin and isn't ready to let go of her daughter. Luckily, Melin has some good   at school.Miriam, Abby and Priya are Meilin's classmates. They have something difficult  too, but they' re with Meilin every step of the way. The group keeps Meilin's feelings in check(可控制的), making her trouble   finally.

"The film is about growing up," said Domee Shi. "I want young people to consider how to respect parents and stay true to at the same time."

Everyone likes a good laugh from time to time, and science supports that feeling. Studies have shown that laughing is related to our physical health, feelings—— even our relationships.

To understand why we laugh, let's go back to our very beginnings. Think back to a time when fast food was a four-legged animal running away from us, and we had to hunt(猎杀) it down to fill our stomachs. At the same time, there were also animals running towards us, hunting us down to feed themselves. At such times, our ancestors would have been under great stress. So it makes sense that when the danger finally passed, early humans shared a laugh with one another as if to tell the group everything was OK, and that there was no need to be afraid of what was happening around them.

A long-running study of couples at the University of California of more than 150 long-term relationships that started in 1989 has shown that laughter is the glue that keeps people together. "Laughter can make it easier for couples to communicate and keep their relationships," one researcher said.

What's more, laughter is 30 times easier to happen together with others than when one is alone. Laughter is contagious. You' re much more likely to laugh if you hear someone else laughing.

Laughter is like a pill in your medicine box to help you feel better. And it's free. So don't think it is silly or worthless. If you want to use the magic power of laughter, a funny movie might help—— but it's really the connections laughter builds with other people that count.

Farmer Fred had a donkey. He used the donkey to carry heavy things. One day Fred's brother, Ted, came to visit. He said, "Can I borrow your donkey to take my carrots to the market?"

Fred smiled and said, "Sure! I will go with you."

So the two brothers left for the market. It was a hot day, and soon they began to sweat like a pig(大汗淋漓).

"Let's find a tree and rest in its shade(树荫)," suggested Fred.

"OK!" said Ted. They looked around and couldn't find a tree. Ted had an idea, "We can sit in the donkey's shadow(阴影)!"

"Good idea!" Fred said.

"But the donkey's shadow isn't big enough. Only one of us can sit there. I' ll sit in the shadow because I'm really tired," Ted said.

"I'm tired, too! And don't forget, the donkey is mine!" Fred replied.

"But you lent the donkey to me, so it is mine for now!" They began to squabble.

The donkey thought, "These two brothers are selfish. They both want my shadow, but neither of them cares about me! How could they do that to me? I should run away!" Then the donkey ran away with the carrots quickly.

When they realized the donkey had been gone, Fred said, "Oh, no! We' re so silly. We lost the most important thing in the fight simply for a shadow."

John liked running, but he wasn't a very strong runner. However, he 1 to take part in a marathon.On the day of the race, he still couldn't help feeling 2 though he had trained hard. As the race began, John had trouble catching up with other runners. His legs ached, his breath was short, and he wanted to 3 .

A long time ago, people just thought about Artificial Intelligence (人工智能). But now, it's really here, and it is growing very fast.

It can do a lot of things to help us in different ways. Many industries use AI to improve their work efficiency (效率). New energy cars use AI to help people drive more comfortably. In the medical system, AI is also used to help with disease diagnosis (诊断) and medical image analysis (分析).

AI is also influencing education. Some schools are starting to use AI to help with building a student ability analysis system. Some students and even parents use AI apps like zuoyebang to help solve problems in the homework so that they can get the correct answers at once.

Not long ago, mobile phones were used mainly by business people and government officers in society. In the US, mobile phone users were about 350,000 in 1985. Now there are 210 million mobile phone users in the US. Studies also show that over 50 percent of children in the US have their own personal mobile phones. The number of mobile phone users has also increased throughout the world. At the beginning of 2019, the number of total users jumped to 3 billion worldwide.

When people throw their mobile phones away, they usually end up in the open air. Mobile phones include some materials like lead, mercury, and cadmium. They can go into the public drinking water and food to cause people and animals health problems. About 75 percent of mobile phone users don't throw their phones away. Instead, they prefer to keep the waste ones sitting around the house as they are not worth very much. People are also afraid that others may know their information if they sell their waste phones. Less than 20 percent of them are recycled each year.

Mobile phones have valuable materials inside. The most valuable material is gold. They can be used again after recycling. If all of the waste phones in the US are recycled, it will save enough energy to offer over 194,000 US families electricity for one year.

One method of recycling mobile phones is to take the working parts of broken phones, then combine (使结合) them with the working parts of other used mobile phones to make one ready-to-use mobile phone. Another method of mobile phone recycling is to melt (熔化) down and separate parts of the phone, getting the valuable materials, such as gold and platinum. Plastic and glass can also be recycled from used mobile phones.

After washing your hair, you might want to make it dry as soon as possible. Then a hair dryer is a great tool. A normal hair dryer is a small device(设备) in the shape of the number seven. At the bottom is a long wire(电线).  Sometimes the long wire might be trouble for you. But now Volo Beauty has helped to solve the problem. They have invented the world's first cordless(无电线的) hair dryer.

Last Sunday, the company showed off the new technology at a fair.  It will cut down the time it takes to dry your hair and be more convenient to use.

According to Volo Beauty, this special hair dryer can run on medium heat for more than 20 minutes on a single charge(单次充电). 

The system, called Volo Go, has a battery(电池) in it, allowing it to be used without the wire. Volo says it will be sold at the price of $399.

  Ryan Goldman, the CEO of Volo Beauty, tells reporters that the system takes years to make. He has got this idea because he has been tired of seeing all of the wires hanging out of drawers at his salons (美发厅).

The Chinese character fu is a necessity in Spring Festival celebrations. It expresses best wishes for the coming new year. The tradition of pasting(贴) the character fu on walls and doors  around for a long time. It's recorded that people already started this tradition in the Song Dynasty.

The character fu can be pasted either   or upside down, because in Chinese, the "reversed fu " and " fu arrives" sound similar to each other, and both are  as " fu dao le". There is a story about the origin of pasting the "reversed fu ". Zhu Yuanzhang, the first emperor of the Ming Dynasty, used the character fu as a secret signal to kill a family for laughing at his wife, Empress Ma. the disaster , the kind-hearted Empress Ma ordered every family in the capital to paste the character fu in front of their doors  the sun rose the next day. Everyone followed her order, but one family pasted the character upside down, because they couldn't read or write. The next day, when the emperor ordered his soldiers to check, they found the character fu everywhere,  the upside-down one. The emperor was very angry and ordered his palace guards to kill the family who had posted the character.

Realizing the situation was not good, Empress Ma said to the emperor, "That family knew that you were coming to visit them today, so they posted the character upside down on purpose. Doesn't it have the same as‘fu arrives'?" After hearing this, the emperor set the family free. From then on, people began to paste the character fu upside down for the purpose of hoping for luck and honoring Empress Ma.
