When 14-year-old Lin Tao saw an old man fall down on the street, he didn't hesitate to help. He called the old man's family and stayed with him until the ambulance arrived. Later, the old man's son thanked him with a gift, but Lin Tao refused it. "I just did what I should do," he said.

Lin Tao is a member of his school's "Kindness Club", which was set up last year. The club has over 80 members, and they do different voluntary work every month: they help clean the community park, read stories to children in the hospital, and buy daily things for the lonely elderly. Lin Tao says the club teaches him that kindness is a circle. When you help others, they will pass the kindness on to someone else.

Last month, the club organized a book donation activity for a primary school in a mountain village. They collected over 500 books, and the students there sent them a thank-you video. "Watching the video made me feel so proud," Lin Tao said. "I realize that helping others is the happiest thing in the world."

Voluntary work is more than just giving a hand to others and it's a way to build a warmer society. A recent survey among middle school students in Shanghai shows that 68% of teenagers have taken part in at least one voluntary activity, but only 32% keep doing it regularly. Some students say they quit because they have no enough time, while others think their small efforts can't make a real difference.

However, volunteers from a community service center tell a different story. They say even a simple smile or a short talk can light up the life of people in need. For example, visiting the elderly once a month can make them feel less lonely, and teaching primary school students to read can help them build confidence in learning. What's more, voluntary work also helps teenagers grow in that they learn to care for others, work with teammates and understand the meaning of responsibility.

The survey also finds that schools and families play a key role in encouraging students to do voluntary work. When schools organize more voluntary activities and parents set a good example, more teenagers are willing to join in and stick to it.

A school newspaper is a great place for students to practice writing and share ideas. Our school started one last term, and it has become very popular among us.

Last month, the newspaper club held a meeting to choose new members. I 1 to join them because I love writing. There were about twenty students at the meeting. The teacher asked us to write a short passage in fifteen minutes.

When I finished, I handed in my paper and waited for the result. Three days later, I received an email. It said I was one of the new writers. I was so excited that I told my parents the good news at 2 .

My first job was to write a report about the school sports meeting. I took a notebook and a camera. During the meeting, I interviewed some players and took many photos. I also 3 notes carefully.

At a primary school in Beijing, students watched carefully. An old craftsman(手艺人), Mr Zhang, finished a small green butterfly. He made it with thin grass. When he held it in the sun, it looked like it could fly away. 

Mr Zhang is very good at this art. With his hands, even common grass becomes lovely animals. "Straw weaving(草编) is like talking to nature," he says. Mr Zhang fell in love with straw weaving when he was a child. Later, it even became his job. Over the years, he has learned more than 100 ways to weave. 

He once worked in a store, making animals with grass. "Not many people bought them," he laughed, "but some people loved them and ordered more." He knows that this art is not for everyone—only for those who see how valuable it is. 

Straw weaving is not easy. It needs a calm mind and patience. Not many young people want to learn it, because they can't make much money. But Mr Zhang keeps teaching. He often teaches kids the traditional art in schools in Beijing.

"Maybe the kids won't become straw weaving artists," he says. "But if they remember making a grass butterfly with their own hands, this traditional art will live on." 

The first person in our family to do yoga was my mum. Her best friend, Sissy, who lived next door to us,1 yoga to her. She said if Mum was 2 of the rush of modern life and wanted to reduce stress, then yoga could help. Sissy was a very peaceful person so Mum 3  accepted. 

I watched Mum every day doing her breathing exercises and 4  her postures(动作). After a few months, she said she felt much 5 . Dad was getting envious(羡慕的). He wasn't going to be left out so he 6  yoga too. He goes to a class twice a week now. 

Then Mum had the bright7 that my sister and I should do yoga. She researched the kind of yoga that is 8  for children and learnt as much as she could about it. Then she became our9 . To my surprise, it turned out really well. 

At first, we mostly did breathing exercises but then we moved on to stretching(伸展) exercises. We had to lift our ribcage(胸腔), reach our arms to the side and circle our body with them. Mum told us to10 we were enjoying ourselves in the sunshine. It was really fun! 

Our whole family does yoga now. Even our dog, Bingo, likes to join in!
