Have you ever thought of what life is like for old people? Have you ever helped old people who live alone? Can they get help when they need it?

Six students from Beijing 101 Middle School looked deeper at this question and wrote a proposal (提案) to the China Youth Model Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (全国青少年模拟政协活动). They advised to build more old people's service stations in the neighborhood. They also gave suggestions about how governments, neighborhoods and hospitals can work together to make this happen.

An old people's service station is different from a nursing home. It offers things like daytime care, cooking, cleaning and friendship to old people who live in their own homes. The students surveyed more than 1,100 people, about 90 percent of them said they would prefer using the stations' services to moving into a nursing home. However, there are not enough of these stations, and many are not run very well.

The six students came up with a solution after reading more than 60 surveys, interviewing 108 people and visiting 25 different organizations. Their proposal beat out almost 100 others to win the Best Proposal award (奖项) in 2021. 

"This experience helps me to better understand the importance of caring old people. Also I see the light and abilities in us," said Xu Wanqing, one of the students.

"Taking part in the China Youth Model CPPCC has been good for students," agreed their teacher Li Jie. "They've developed a sense of caring old people, as well as gotten more confidence about themselves since they've seen how much they can do for others."

Along with the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt, the Great Sphinx is one of the greatest monuments (历史遗迹) in human history. 

Carved (雕) out of a single piece of stone of hundreds of tons, the Sphinx is the head of a man resting on the body of a lion. The nose, eyes and ears have been carved in accurate proportion (比例). That's not easy for an object 72 meters long and 20 meters high. The Sphinx was built in about 2500 BC. But no one knows what tools were used or by whom. The Egyptians wrote very little about the building of the Sphinx. No one knows what the Sphinx looked like when it was first finished because both natural erosion (侵蚀) and people's damage have changed its shape. Many earlier pictures of the Sphinx show it with wings, the body of a lion, and the face of a man. 

Today only the man and the lion can be seen. To this day, people can't agree with each other on the true role of the Sphinx.

I am a middle school student. My name is Wang Jing. My grandfather is 70 years old. He often says life has changed a lot. It becomes better and better. I ask him what life was like when he was a child. The following is what he says.

When he was a child, he used to feel hungry. There didn't use to be enough food for him to eat. He has two brothers and two sisters. His parents were both farmers. They were very poor and couldn't let their children eat as much as possible. As for clothes, they didn't use to have enough clothes. They didn't use to buy new clothes. The younger brothers and sisters often wore their elder brothers' and sisters' clothes. My grandfather is the youngest. Only he went to school and had a job in the city. His brothers and sisters didn't get an education (教育) and live in the countryside now. Now my grandfather has retired and lives a happy life. He can eat any food that he wants. He can buy clothes that he wants to buy. He says he is much happier than before. He often asks me to study hard. He says if I work hard, I can have a good future.

One afternoon a boss was riding in his car when he saw two men along the roadside eating grass. He felt 1 and ordered his driver to stop and he got out to ask 2 why.

He asked one man, "Why are you eating grass?" "We don't have any money for 3 We have to eat grass." the poor man replied.

"Well, then, you can come with me to my house and I'll 4 you," the boss said.

"But sir, I have a wife and two children with me. They are over there, under that tree."

"Bring them along," the boss replied. 5 to the other poor man, he said, "You come with us, too." The second man said 6 a pitiful voice, "But sir, I also have a wife and six children with me!"

"Bring them along 7 ," the boss answered. They all 8 the car, which was no easy task even for such a large car. In the car one of the poor men turned to the boss and said, "Sir, you are so 9 Thank you for taking all of us with you."
