Dong Lina: A Shining Star

Tips to Save Water and Electricity in Our Schools

Water and electricity are important for all of us. We use them every day at school, and there's something we can do to save them. 

First of all, let's focus on saving water. Always double-check that you turn off the taps after washing your hands.  If you see a running tap, tell your teacher right away. When you' re filling up your water bottle from the water fountain, don't let the water run wild. Just take what you need. 

 Turn off the lights when there's plenty of natural light in the classroom. Also, remember to turn off the fans when nobody's in the room. And don't leave things like the projector, computers, or TVs on standby.  In the corridors and stairs, some lights come on automatically. But we should still be careful and not mess around to make them turn on more than necessary. 

Saving water and electricity at school is necessary for all of us.  Besides, it's good for the planet as well. Let's get started right now and encourage all our mates to join in!

① Scientists in Australia have used Artificial Intelligence (AI) to help them locate（定位）a rare bird called'the Plains-wanderer'. This new information will help scientists protect the endangered birds. 

② The birds were once common in eastern Australia. But as grasslands were turned into farms and cities, the birds' numbers fell by over 85% in recent years. Scientists believe there are now only 250 to 1, 000 of the birds in the wild. 

③ To protect these rare birds, scientists first had to learn where they were. Zoo Victoria worked with Queensland University of Technology to locate the birds. Plains-wanderers are hard to find, so the team chose to"listen" for the birds instead. 

④ Female Plains-wanderers make an unusual"Ooom" call, and this was the key to locating them. The researchers set up 35 special recording devices（设备）called"song meters" in nine different areas. Song meters record all the sounds made in an area. 

⑤ The AI system analyzed（分析）the sounds and discovered Plains-wanderer calls coming from two of the sites. The scientists checked carefully and found that the AI system was correct. It's the first time in over 30 years that the Plains-wanderer has been found in the west of Melbourne. The researchers said that it was a huge and exciting finding. 

⑥ And the researchers are still"listening"-using song meters and AI to try to locate more of these birds. 

China has its own"spidermen" in Huangshan, Anhui Province. Their work is not to save the world, but to collect rubbish from high mountain or get phones dropped by tourists. 

Li Peisheng, 51, is one of the 18 spidermen. They climbed down the Mountain on ropes to keep it clean. "We collect and clean rubbish from very steep cliffs（悬 崖）, "he said. "When we climb, one hand holds tight, and the other hand moves us carefully. We must be careful not to hit the rocks or bushes. "

He added, "To be a'Spider-Man' cleaner, you need a strong awareness of safety and you have to be responsible. Besides, you'd better be in very good health. People with heart problems can't do this job. "

The jaw harp, or kouxian in Chinese, is one of the world's oldest musical instruments（乐器）. It is believed that the jaw harps were introduced to eastern Europe near the end of the  (thirteen) century. This instrument  (make) of either metal or bamboo. Each one is 8 to 9  (centimetre) long and 1 centimetre wide. It can produce amazing sounds of nature like birds singing and water running  the instrument is small and simple. Kouxian is now  (wide) played by musicians across the world.  larger number of young people are using this instrument to play pop music today.

Ma Guoguo is an ethnic Yi（彝族）woman. Her grandmother was a skilled kouxian player and she learned the skill  her grandma. Ma's kouxian style is faster and  (loud) than traditional performances, producing more powerful echoes（回声）. Ma received a prize in an international jaw harp competition in Russia. She often offers online kouxian lessons  (teach) worldwide learners this traditional instrument. So far, the Chinese National Museum of Ethnology (CNME)  (organize) several activities to show the culture of kouxian worldwide.

Respecting others is important in our life. But it is not always easy, especially when people have different views.

More and more traditional cultural elements （元素）are added into street dances, such as Tai Chi, Drunken fist（醉 拳）and face-changing. Young Chinese dancers are trying to use some creative ways to tell Chinese stories to the world.

Homies, a street dance team from Chengdu, got third place at the VIBE Dance Competition with their performance, "Sword and Qi in Sichuan". It was the first time for a Chinese team to win a prize in this competition's 30-year history.

"The cheers from the worldwide audience（观众）are lifetime treasures for us, which are more important for us than the prize itself," said Fang Zhenghua, the director.

Mixing modern dances with tradition, young Chinese street dancers are attracting worldwide audiences with their deep love and understanding of traditional culture. As an example, the "Sword and Qi in Sichuan" got inspirationfrom a Kung Fu video game and a book that Fang loved when he was young.

Following the competition, Homies quickly got attention from the media, making their dance well known to the whole world.

"Young Chinese dancers are confident and creative. They mix traditional Chinese culture with modern street dance to show their love for our culture. This amazing mix is helping Chinese culture connect with the world in a new and exciting way," said Cai Shangwei,a Chinese director.

Today, China is facing a growing obesity rate（肥胖比率）. The National Health Commission (NHC) reported that over 50% of adults are overweight or obese. It warned that ifit is not controlled, the rate could climb about 20.5% by 2030.

What's worse, people are suffering from more and more health problems because of overweight. To deal with this, the government carried out a nationwide action to build a supportive environment for weight control within three years.

At a hospital in Beijing, Ms. Chen, a patient, received help from a team of doctors. They worked together to create a plan for her, which included traditional Chinese medicine treatments（治疗）and diet changes.

At the same time, sports are more and more popular. Families are spending more time on outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling and camping. By 2023, China had built 4.59 million sports centres and 370,000 km of fitness trails(健身步道). Nearly 50% of people now have the habits of doing exercise—an 18% increase since 2018.

The government has also guided people to build healthy eating habits. A healthy dinner usually includes fish, vegetables, and whole grains. Many office workers now prefer bowls of greens topped with beef or chicken for lunch. Healthier traditional foods, like low-sugar mooncakes, are becoming popular.
