It's said that there is no safer place than home. There are many reasons why your home seems safe. One is that you know the environment well. However, accidents can happen anywhere, even at home, According to the UK safety charity, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents(RoSPA), lots of people die as a result of home accidents across the UK every year. Among them, home fire is one of the main causes.
In fact, cooking is the leading cause of all home fires and fire injuries. Nearly half of reported home fires start in the kitchen. Thanksgiving is the most likely day of the year for home cooking fires, followed by Christmas.
People are the main cause why home cooking fires start. Cooking with no one around is the main cause for most cooking fires. Other causes of kitchen fires and injuries include people's wrongly using rice cookers, microwaves and other kitchen appliances(电 器) and forgetting to turn them off.
Luckily, there are many ways to cook safely every day of the year. For one thing, always stay in the kitchen while cooking. If you must leave the kitchen for a reason, turn off the appliances. Certainly, keeping a fire extinguisher(灭火器) in the kitchen is not just smart but is highly suggested. It helps to put out a small fire before the firemen arrive. What else? Never cook if you feel like sleeping. And always practise carefully. Lastly, do what is needed to make sure your kitchen is a safe place at home. Your family's health and safety partly depend on it.
