This is a true story about something that happened to me last summer. I was spending the holiday (happy) with my family at a beach in the south of England. I spent the rest of the summer saving up for a new camera.

So is it really true that life is better for teenagers now? It is certainly true that many teenagers have got more things nowadays. So parents have got more money to spend on each child. And many things are cheaper than they were when our parents were children.

Forty years ago, no one could imagine a world with tiny computers and amazing smartphones. And now these things are necessary—we can't imagine living without them!

However, technology often means we spend more time at home. And often it's just us , with our computer or television. Teenagers don't do enough exercise. And, although young people still get on well with their friends, some people think teenagers today don't have so many social activities as the teenagers in the past.

Now researchers have found that people with musical training have an easier time learning Chinese. Writing in the online edition of Nature Neuroscience, researchers from Northwestern University say that both skills draw on the same parts of the brain that help people discover changes in pitch (音高).

One of the study's authors, Nina Kraus, said the findings suggested that studying music "actually tunes our sensory system". This means that schools that want children to do well in languages should hesitate before cutting music programs, Dr. Kraus said. She said music training might also help children with language problems.

Mandarin (普通话) speakers have been shown to have a more complex encoding (编码) of pitch patterns in their brains than English speakers do. This is because in Mandarin and other Asian languages, pitch plays a central role. A single-syllable (单音节) word can have several meanings depending on how it is intoned.

For this study, the researchers looked at 20 non-Chinese speaking volunteers, half with no musical background and half who have studied an instrument for at least six years.

As they were shown a movie, the volunteers also heard an audio tape (录音磁带) of the Mandarin word "mi" in three of its meanings: squint (眯), bewilder (迷) and rice (米). The researchers recorded activities in their brain stems (脑干) to see how well they were processing the sounds. Those with a music background showed much more brain activities in response to the Chinese sounds.

The lead author of the study, Patrick C. M. Wong, said it might work both ways. It appears that native speakers of tonal (声调的) languages may do better at learning instruments (乐器).

Though she never told stories, her stories were in the way she ate—she savored (品味) her food, valued it. Often she would be the first to sit at the dinner table, and the last to leave. Food had been really scarce (缺乏的) when she grew up.

Her stories were in the way she handed me lucky money. From a young age, my grandmother was brought up to understand the importance of hard work and the necessary of saving. Every Chinese New Year, I would be handed, or sent, a small red envelope that contained money, but never more than twenty dollars. When I was young, I didn't understand why my grandmother gave me such a small amount of money. As I grew older, I realized that she wasn't teaching me about money, but about tradition and hard work and family. The money was insignificant. I would probably spend it on any toy that I would lose soon after; it was the meaning behind her gift that mattered. It was her saying, "I love you; I am your family and I want you to work hard as your family has before you."

My grandmother's stories were lessons. But they were never told in words. From the time that I was very young, up until she could barely remember my name, I remember her calling me "good girl". Those two little words, in the course of my growing up, were a constant reminder that I was still so young, with still so far to go.

Now my grandmother is gone, but I see her every day. I see her in the women around me and in the mirror. She lives with me, inside me, and in the legacies (遗产) that I will create. And I know she would be proud.

Another one I am pleased with is that I managed to improve the relationship between Mum and Dad. Dad was a successful businessman who was rarely at home. Mum was a housewife who always felt bored and constantly nagged (唠叨) him to let her go to work. Their constant arguing bothered me, so I advised Dad that Mum would be better off with a part-time job. He agreed, and their relationship has improved since then.

My most proud achievement, however, is my successful work in the local old folks' home. My grandparents had raised me since I was a child. I wept (哭泣) bitterly when they died. Unlike many of my classmates, I do not take part in my school's community service to earn points. I enjoy my voluntary work and believe I'm contributing to a worthwhile cause. This is where I can help. I talk to the elderly, assist them with their daily life, and listen to their problems, glory days and the hardships they experienced.

Last year, I hosted a successful New Year party for the elderly and they enjoyed a great time. Many expressed a desire to attend another party the following year. When I reflect on my accomplishments, I'm especially proud of my service at the old folks' home, so I hope to study social work at university and work as a social worker in the future. I wish to be more skilled in attending to the less fortunate as well as find great satisfaction in it, after all.

The koala is unique (独特的) to Australia and is an important symbol of the country. The koala is found in open eucalypt (桉树) forests in south-east Queensland. Even if it is called koala bear, this animal has nothing to do with the actual bear. Koalas have thick fur and large ears. Their broad, flat nose makes them look cute, similar to teddy bears. In fact koalas aren't cute. They have sharp teeth and very sharp claws (爪)! Koalas are marsupials (有袋类). This means the mother carries her baby in a pocket while it develops, like a kangaroo. The baby koala lives in its mother's pocket for the first six months of its life.

The name "koala" comes from a native Australian word that means "no drink". The koalas get almost all their water from the eucalyptus leaves they eat. That's where they get their food too. Koalas eat only eucalyptus leaves. The eucalyptus trees are where the koalas live and also where they sleep. Koalas sleep about nineteen hours a day!

Why do they sleep so much? Some people think it's because they're lazy. But koalas aren't lazy. They sleep so much because there isn't much nutrition (营养) in eucalyptus leaves. Koalas store hardly any fat, so they must save their energy. One way to do this is to move slowly and sleep a lot. After a day of sleeping they like to move around and cat just after sunset. They live alone most of the time. Koalas are very protective of their trees. If a koala sees another koala eating in its favorite tree, it might tell the other koala to leave by "barking" at it. Koalas do "talk" to each other. Besides barks, the males make a deep grunting (呼噜的) sound. The mothers and babies talk in soft clicking sounds. If they get scared they may scream (尖叫) like a baby. The koala is also an excellent swimmer.

They are able to cross rivers to escape from heavy flooding (泛滥).

When we first met in a summer camp, we got along so well.

But then something happened at a picnic. "Did you hear about the shopping center news?" asked one of our friends Levar. "They want to cut down lots of trees to make room for a shopping center."

"That's terrible! We have to stop that," I said.

"I disagree," said Karina. "The shopping center would give new jobs to people in need."

"But animals would lose their homes!" I said. "I want people to have jobs, but it doesn't mean cutting down trees."

I wished Karina could agree with me about saving the trees, but she had her reasons for believing what she did. I was so angry that I didn't talk to her for days.

I smiled at her and said, "You did your share, because it was your idea and you started all this." The little boy smiled and thanked us. I was left with a good feeling. I saw the love and goodness of others all around me. The woman in front of me smiled and said, "It feels good to give, doesn't it?" I smiled back and said, "Yes!"

I love shopping online. I sit in front of the computer for hours. I shop every day. I can always find cheap but good things online. Sometimes I watch movies or listen to songs.

Orion Jean is a thirteen-year-old boy from Texas, the US. So far, he (make) great efforts to make the world a better place.
