    On the last day of the year, the 31st of December, people wait till 12 pm. Everybody must have 12 grapes to eat at midnight. At each sound of the clock, we must eat a grape.     Can you imagine a world where white children can take the school bus every morning, while black children have to walk? Can you imagine a situation where a black man can't sit with a white man on the bus?

    The things really happened in the United States. However, a black woman named Rosa Parks helped change those things.

    Rosa Parks was born in 1913 in the United States. She lived on a farm with her parents and grandparents. They taught her that everyone should be treated fairly. She kept that in mind. But the truth was that white people enjoyed more freedom (自由) than black people at that time.

    One evening, Rosa Parks took the bus home. She sat down in her seat. As the bus became more crowded, the driver ordered Parks to stand up so that a white man could sit down. Parks replied, "No." In the end, the police arrested (逮捕) her for such a small matter.

    It made black people angry and encouraged them to stand up for fair treatment. Black leaders asked people to take part in the bus boycott (抵制). Martin Luther King gave a speech to encourage people to take action together. Finally, the Supreme Court ruled that everyone had the same rights (权利) on buses.

    Rosa Parks died in 2005 at the age of 92. She spent her whole life fighting for fair treatment.
