On the last day of the year, the 31st of December, people wait till 12 pm. Everybody must have 12 grapes to eat at midnight. At each sound of the clock, we must eat a grape. But we can't ever finish eating the grapes on time! Usually when people still have some grapes in their mouths, they look at each other and start to laugh. This tradition started in Spain long ago. One year, when there were a lot of grapes, the king of Spain decided to give grapes to everybody to eat on New Year's Eve.

On New Year's Day in Britain people have parties. At 12 o'clock, the music stops, and we listen to the radio. On the radio we hear Big Ben, the famous clock in London. Then everybody sings a song about friendship and kisses their friends. We say "Happy New Year" to each other. It's lucky if a tall man with dark hair is the first person to come to the house in the New Year. So I go and visit as many friends as I can. They all give me a drink.

In all cities in Brazil, we have a big party on New Year's Eve, especially in Rio de Janeiro. People in this city go to the beaches to watch fireworks. We put flowers in the sea and think about things we want for ourselves or others. We usually wear white clothes for good luck during the New Year.

Can you imagine a world where white children can take the school bus every morning, while black children have to walk? Can you imagine a situation where a black man can't sit with a white man on the bus?

The things really happened in the United States. However, a black woman named Rosa Parks helped change those things.

Rosa Parks was born in 1913 in the United States. She lived on a farm with her parents and grandparents. They taught her that everyone should be treated fairly. She kept that in mind. But the truth was that white people enjoyed more freedom (自由) than black people at that time.

One evening, Rosa Parks took the bus home. She sat down in her seat. As the bus became more crowded, the driver ordered Parks to stand up so that a white man could sit down. Parks replied, "No." In the end, the police arrested (逮捕) her for such a small matter.

It made black people angry and encouraged them to stand up for fair treatment. Black leaders asked people to take part in the bus boycott (抵制). Martin Luther King gave a speech to encourage people to take action together. Finally, the Supreme Court ruled that everyone had the same rights (权利) on buses.

Rosa Parks died in 2005 at the age of 92. She spent her whole life fighting for fair treatment.

Tom is like any other teenagers. He goes to school, studies at school, does his homework, meets his friends and enjoys doing sports after school.

But between 5:30 and 6:30 from Monday to Friday, Tom cooks breakfast for all the family: Mum, Dad, younger brother Joe and old sister Emma.

"I think it's important for teenagers to learn how to cook. Maths and English are important, of course, but they also need other skills to help them in today's world. First I taught Tom how to cook easy meals like hamburgers, eggs and chips. Then he started using recipes (食谱) in my cookery books. Yesterday he made vegetable soup. It was very good!" Tom's mum says.

"I love cooking and I'm really good at it. None of my friends cook. I don't know why. It isn't difficult and it's great fun. I can also get up early in the morning. It makes me relaxed," Tom says.

In the past, Tom got up late in the morning. Sometimes he went to school without breakfast. He didn't help out at home. His mum wasn't happy with him. Today, things are different and she is very happy.

A tall man wearing a black raincoat stood outside. He said that he came to sell books and he2 politely, "Are your parents at home?" Without thinking, my brother said, "No." Then the man asked, "Would you like to buy some storybooks?" I told him we didn't want to buy anything. When I wanted to close the door, he suddenly pushed the door very3 and came into our house. He took out a4 and ordered me to tie (绑) up my brother's hands with a rope (绳子). I tied up his hands in a special way so my brother could untie himself easily. The man then tied my hands up and locked both of us in the kitchen. Soon, he went upstairs to5 money. I taught my brother to untie the rope on his6. He then untied me. I rushed to the telephone to call the police,7 the line was dead. The doors were all locked from the outside. It was lucky that the man forgot to lock the kitchen window. So we got out of the house through the kitchen window and went to the nearest pay phone to call the police.

Soon8 came to our house and the man was caught by the police. By that time, my parents had come home. We told them the whole story. My parents were9 that we were not hurt. They told me that we shouldn't10 the door to strangers. I learnt a lesson about safety.

Qian Xuesen was born in Shanghai in 1911. He received doctor's degree in1938 in America. He tried to3 China in 1950, but American government stopped him. He didn't come back4 1955. He gave his life to Chinese space flight technology. I must learn from him, and5 for our country.

It was the school art festival again. The art festival show is usually on Saturday afternoon. At the show, the main (perform) are students and teachers. Some of them are really (talent). They sing, dance or perform magic or talk shows. And many parents come to watch the show.

This year, Cathy's school would have a (compete) in the theater near the school.The (win) would get a very good prize. Cathy's class made a show as well. Cathy played a princess (公主) in it. That was one of the ( important)   roles in the show. Cathy got some tickets for her family. She hoped they could come to watch the show.

On the day, Cathy looked out of the back stage (舞台). The whole theater was full of people. She looked for her family (care) and saw they were all on their (seat) except (除了) her father: Her father was a (report) and he might still work overtime (加班) at the TV station. Cathy felt a little sad that he couldn't come.

It was time for Cathy to get on the stage. As she walked up to the stage, she looked down again. Surprisingly, she found her dad was there! Cathy and her classmates acted well and their show won the (one) prize. She felt so good that she could share the happiness her family.
