Animals grow old, just like humans. What do you think of older vild animals? Are they important to their groups? A new study has found that protecting older vild animals is very important because they have knowledge(知识) to help the rest of their populations survive(生存).

Older animals face serious problems in some parts of the world. For example, fishing has caused the number of older fish to fall greatly (up to 97% in some populations). In some places, because poaching is common, older animals are more at risk.

The researchers from Charles Darwin University in Australia, said humans must do more to make sure that enough old animals survive. They've asked the International Union for Conservation of Nature(国际自然保护联盟) to help researchers come up with ways to protect those at risk. They also said that fishing companies should try to stop catching too many old fish, to protect the whole population.

"Kids can make a difference," Craig Kielburger said when he was 12. Craig is now in his twenties, and he still believes it's true. He started a group to help kids all over the world at the age of 12. The group is still going strong

How did Craig get started? In seventh grade, he learned something that made him angry. It was about a Pakistani boy who started working in a crayon factory at the age of 4. The child worked 12 hours a day, 6 days a week. He couldn't go to school or play. He had no freedom at all.

Craig compared that with his own life. Laws in Canada said that kids must go to school. Education was free to all kids. But in Pakistan, education was not free. Children from poor families went to work instead of going to school.

Feeling this was unfair, Craig and his classmates started "Free The Children". Their goal was simple: raise money to build schools and give working children education. At first, some kids laughed at them, saying they couldn't make real change. But Craig didn't give up.

Today, "Free The Children" has more than one million members in 45 countries, Most of them are kids. The money they have raised has helped build more than 5o0 schools around the world. It also pays for health care in poor places.

What is Earth Hour?

On the last Saturday night of March every year, people around the world turn their lights off for one hour.  They are trying to show that small changes can make a great difference to our planet (星球).

How did it start?

The World Wildlife Fund started Earth Hour in 2007, in Australia. More than 2,200,000 homes and businesses joined in.  The electricity (电) they saved could power thousands of computers or televisions for one hour.  They started to take part in the event in 2008. Every year, many landmark buildings in Chinese cities turn off their lights for Earth Hour.
