Hello, boys and girls! I'm Helen. The art festival starts in our middle school. Today is December 13. There is a photographic exhibition (摄影展). Students take many photos. All of them are great. I love one of the photos a lot. It's a photo of a big family. It's named "Happy Birthday, Grandpa!" I think this student must have a happy family, just like me.

The Spring Festival is the most important festival in China. It is also known as Chinese New Year. It usually comes in late January or early February. People like the Spring Festival not because of the new clothes or nice food. It is the family reunion (团聚) time after one year's hard work. People do different things during the festival. Now let's see what the three students say about the Spring Festival.

Amy: It is my favourite festival. I'm from Guangdong. I get oranges when I say "Happy New Year!" to my grandparents. We watch the Spring Festival Gala on TV. On the fourth day, my family usually get some water and wish a good new year. It is so fun.

Tom: I'm 12. I come from Shanxi. Before the festival, we clean our house. On New Year's Eve, our family always have a big dinner. I eat noodles and dumplings on the Spring Festival. And I get lucky money (压岁钱) when I say "Happy New Year!" to my grandparents. This year, my mom buys a pair of red socks for me. She says it's for good luck. I'm so happy.

The smart wristband (手环), a new welcoming product (产品), is changing our lifestyle . And there are also many different brands to choose, such as Huawei or Xiaomi.

Here are the reasons why people choose a wristband.

 The wristband can also be connected (连接) to the mobile phone. You are able to use it to answer the phone, but a traditional (传统的) watch can never do that.

Besides, the smart wristband looks great.  We often see teenagers wearing wristbands.

Thirdly, today, many people have known the importance of health. Some people play sports every day to keep healthy.  The wristband shows the results every day and they'll know if they get enough exercise.

However, some parents still have some worries.  They think the teenagers are under the radiation (辐射) all the time.

Have you heard of depression? It's a mental illness. People who have it may feel sad all the time or do something to hurt themselves. Now, doctors can put a "happy switch (开关)" in their heads to help them. 

Doctors at Shanghai Ruijin Hospital helped a patient (病人) known as Wu Xiaotian. Wu, 31, has had depression since he was 15 years old. 

The doctors did a surgery (手术) on Wu. They put two long lines of electrode (电极) inside his brain (大脑). The 16 electrodes are used to let out electricity on different part of the brain, which can change the patient's feelings. And these electrodes are put in a small "box" inside Wu's body. 

Wu can control the "happy switch" through an app on his phone. When feeling down, Wu turns on the switch and the electrodes start working. He is soon cheered up. 

"It feels like there is power rising from the inside of my body," Wu said. 

The hospital has tested the switch on 26 patients since 2020. Up to now, it has helped cut down a patient's sad feelings by 60 percent, said the hospital. 

But is the switch safe enough? Although patients like Wu feel great using it, the surgery is actually a dangerous one. Healthy people shouldn't use it, or it may hurt their bodies.

Do you like skiing (滑雪)? When it comes to skiing, we have to know about one man—Shan Zhaojian. He is known as China's "father of skiing". 

In 1938, Shan was born in Tonghua, a city known for its ice and snow. In the 1950s, China began to develop ski winter sports in its northeastern areas, and Tonghua built its first cross-country ski team. Shan joined it when he was 16. 

"Things were really tough at that time. We had no money to buy good skis, so we made them by ourselves. Even so, I kept practising hard and believed we could do well," he said. From 1957 to 1960, Shan won 10 medals in different skiing competitions (比赛). 

Because of his poor health, Shan stopped working as a skier at the age of 24, but he stayed close to the winter sports he loved. He worked as a ski coach and head of the Chinese Ski Team. In 1998, Shan stopped his job as a coach and spent more time studying the history of skiing, giving public talks and holding activities about ice and snow sports in schools across the country. "I hope to see more people take part in ice and snow sports," he said.
