Alan liked all kinds of delicious food. As  (a) important officer, he often ate out with other people. The shopkeepers (店主) were glad to see them and they tried their  /best/ to make Alan have a big meal. Then Alan became fatter and fatter. He couldn't even go upstairs to have a sleep. So he had to sleep downstairs. He often felt tired when he walked or did some housework. He was very  (worry) about it.

Unhealthy eating habits can cause  /^'ɪlnəs/. His daughter advised  (he) not to eat out and he had better do some sports to keep healthy. At  (one) , it was difficult for Alan because he couldn't say  to delicious food. But his daughter forced him to have dinner at home and let him eat less than before. After two weeks, Alan was  /sə'praɪzd/ to find that it was easy for him to go upstairs. He was also able to do some housework.

Now, Alan likes to do sports. And he often  a walk with his family after the meal.  order to keep healthy, he also plays basketball on weekends.

Plants are very important.  This is because plants can provide food for animals and human beings. Animals and human beings need plants to live. 

If you look carefully at the plants around you, you will find that there are two kinds of plants: flowering plants and non-flowering plants. Flowering plants can make seeds (种子).  Some fruits have one seed, some have two, three or four, and some have many seeds. But only a few fruits don't have seeds in them at all. An example of a fruit without seeds is the banana.

 They grow from spores (孢子). Spores are very, very small. Some spores are so small and light that they can float in the air.  When these spores fall on wet places, they usually grow into new plants.

A new game is becoming popular with young people: tens or even hundreds of people come together, choose to be "cats" or "mice" share locations (位置) on their phones, and then play hide-and-seek (捉迷藏) in a big open-air space.

Young people said that this game not only gets people to exercise but also throws them into the happiness of childhood memories (回忆). It helps with stress (压力) and turns running into a fun social (社交的) game.

On Sept 24, I went to experience (体验) the activity with Patrick McCarthy, a writer for Teens, at the Olympic Forest Park in Beijing. There were around 30 people. Most of us didn't know each other. The game had two rounds (轮). In the first round, five people were "cats" and the rest were "mice". With five minutes for "mice" to run and hide, the "cats" found them using the locations they shared on a map app. The second round was group competition (竞赛).

We all played hide-and-seek when we were little. When I invited McCarthy, he wondered, "What's the point of playing this game as a grown-up?"

It turned out to be a happy experience for him. The use of GPS made this childhood game much more fun. "It was a creative (创造性的) way of bringing something new to old games with technology (科技)," said McCarthy. "It is a good way to meet new people and even make friends, as one needs to work together with new people."

For me, it's good that this activity got me moving as I'm not so interested in working out in my daily life. However, I could have more fun if the park were a bit small. When I saw the "mice" were so far away from me, I just wanted to give up. Also, when it made it difficult for me to get caught, I felt less excited.

The next day I looked for a pen and some paper in my things. I made two lists (清单): one of all the bad things about my situation (情况), and the other of all the good things.

Sometimes it rained all day, so I had to stay inside. It was hard to read or write because the house was dark and I didn't have candles. Then I remembered in Africa people made lamps using the fat of animals. I did the same. They didn't give much light, but they were better than nothing.

I looked at my lists and I thought. "These lists show something important. We can always find something good in a bad situation if we look for it. I must stop feeling sad and sorry for myself. My new life is here, on this island (岛). I must make it as comfortable (舒服的) as I can."

I started making my house stronger. I built thick walls and put branches (树枝) on the roof to keep out the rain. I put up some shelves and I put my things on them. I made some furniture—two tables and a chair. They weren't very beautiful but they were very useful. I made a small cave (洞穴) at the back of my house. It was cool and a good place to keep food. I called it my "kitchen".

Children get together around a big and old tree. They bring pigs' feet and a cake. An old host stands at the front. The host asks the tree to bless (保佑) the children. Then, the host cuts the food into pieces and gives it out to the children.

This is a big part of the New Year of the Yi people. The New Year begins on November 20th and lasts for three days. Yi parents cook pigs' feet for their children. They tie strings (系绳子) onto the pigs' feet. This way, the children can carry the feet on their backs.

Usually, there is a small pigs' feet competition. A good pig's foot should be big and strange in shape. The stranger it is, the more luck the family has. Yi children share the "lucky" pigs' feet with the tree during the New Year. They hope they can grow as tall and strong as the tree!

Most Yi people live in the mountains of Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou and Guangxi. They grow up with lots of trees. During the New Year, young men and women of the Yi people get up early. They bring some water and vegetables back home. They do it secretly (秘密地). They believe it brings good luck to their families.
