Shenzhen is a fast-developing and innovative city. In the past ten years, we have seen great changes in our daily lives.

To most people, Chinese characters may seem like a random mix of strokes(笔画) and radicals(偏旁部首). But to Lena, a 20-year-old student from the US, each one tells unique story.

Monkeys often help each other to raise their young babies. A new study has found that snub-nosed monkeys ( 金 丝 猴 )actually choose babysitters based on who has the most parenting experience. 

This discovery was made by accident by a team of researchers at the Southwest Forestry University in China. While studying black-and-white snub-nosed monkeys during the baby season in Baimaxueshan National Nature Reserve(自然保护区), they noticed that the monkeys often passed around their newborns. They took turns to clean, carry, or even feed them. 

This behaviour reminded the researchers of how humans babysit for each other, so they decided to watch the monkeys more closely. They followed the group every day for six months. There were more than 400 moments where a female monkey spent time with a mother and newborn. These moments involved cleaning the baby or gently pulling them closer. 

Once the babies had grown up a bit, the mothers were more willing to let other females take care of them. They usually picked babysitters who had more experience with young monkeys. Younger females with less experience would still be allowed to look after the infants, but usually after a more experienced monkey had finished helping. 

Chum-Yan Cui, one of the researchers, told New Scientist magazine that this was a good chance for the younger females to learn how to take care of babies, so they would be ready to care for their own babies in the future. She also said that more research needs to be done to find out if mothers choose babysitters based on the social status of monkeys or family relationships.
