    Meet a Brat

Collins Dictionary picked "brat" as its 2024 Word of the Year. The term "brat" means a person, especially a playful or naughty (淘气的) child who behaves badly. But in 2024, "brat" became popular to describe people who are confident, independent and enjoy life. For example, a young person who dresses fashionably and isn't afraid to be different might be called a brat. It's a playful way to show that they're cool.

Oxford Dictionary named "brain rot" as its 2024 Word of the Year. Brain rot happens when you spend too much time on your phone or computer looking through boring or silly things. Think about how your brain might feel after watching hours of meaningless videos on social media. Of course, it gets tired and doesn't learn anything new. So, remember to take breaks and do something productive to keep your brain sharp.

    Manifest Your Dream

Cambridge Dictionary chose "manifest" as its 2024 Word of the Year. Manifest means showing something clearly. For example, if you see smoke from a window, it manifests that there's a fire inside. But now, it also means picturing something in your mind and repeating positive words to imagine achieving it. For example, Simone Biles, a famous gymnast, often manifested her dream of winning an Olympic gold medal and finally really succeeded. However, hard work still matters in achieving dreams!

It was the night of the primary school talent show. After dinner, my mother took out her phone to show a video of my 10-year-old daughter Jenny's performance. Jenny had1 the famous piece "Perfect" on the piano while singing along during the show. Although she was2, she still managed to shine on the stage.

When I saw my mother about to click "Play" on her phone, I3 and stopped her. "Mom, wait a minute. We shouldn't show the video right now."

My mother looked at me in4. "It was such a great performance. I just wanted to show her how wonderful she was."

I nodded (点头). "I know, Mom. But why don't we just let her5 that moment?"

My mother looked a bit more confused (困惑的). Then I6, "Jenny has felt like a star on stage. Seeing the video7 an outside view so soon might change her memory of that experience. You might understand this if you've heard yourself on a recording. You may wonder, ‘Wait, do I really sound like that?' A lot of people have difficulty accepting that8."

My mother nodded with an air of9, "You're right. Let's not show it for now." Then she put her phone away.

10, my worries have a scientific basis (依据). Research has shown that reactivating (重新激活) an experience can influence one's11. Elizabeth Loftus studies memory at the University of California. She once told me, "The timing really12. If you want to share photos or videos, it's better to wait for a few13. An immediate replay can sometimes make the moment less special."

Now a week has passed since the performance. "I can't believe it's over!" Jenny says as she dances around the kitchen. She knows I have the video, but interestingly, she has never14 to see it. I think I'll let us both remember the experience15 it was on that day. It just felt perfect from our own point of view.
