Many students eat their breakfasts on the way to school or in the dining room. But some of them don't really know how to eat well when eating out.

You have just experienced what is commonly referred to as peer pressure(同 伴压力), also called peer influence. You will adopt a certain type of behavior, dress, or attitude in order to be accepted as part of a group of your "peers". As a teen, you are likely to have experienced the effect of peer pressure in a number of different areas.

We are all influenced by our peers at any age. For teens, as school and other activities take you away from home, you may spend more time with your friends than with your family. As you become more independent, your peers naturally play a greater role in your life. According to Dr Casey from Cornell University, teens are very quick and accurate in making decisions on their own and in situations where they have time to think. However, when they make decisions in the heat of the moment or in social situations, their decisions are often influenced by factors like peers. In a recent study, teen volunteers played a video driving game, either alone or with friends watching. The researchers discovered that the number of risks teens took more than doubled when their friends were watching, compared with when they played alone. This shows that teens may find it more difficult to control risky behavior when their friends are around, or in situations where they are extremely angry.

Just as people can influence us to make unwise choices, they can also influence us to make good ones. A teen might join in a volunteer project because his or her friends are doing it, or get good grades because his or her friends think getting good grades is important. In fact, friends often encourage each other to study, or try out for sports.

While we are always influenced by those around us, the decision to act or not is up to us. So when it comes to decision making, the choice is up to you.

There are a lot of advantages of being tall besides being able to reach the top shelf without a step ladder. More cash? That's right. Tall men earn more money, reports Live Science. On the other hand, there is also a huge disadvantage. According to a new study from the University of California Riverside, tall people may be more likely to develop cancer.

Leonard Nunney, a researcher at UC Riverside, reviewed four large population studies about the height and cancer. Nunney studied more than 10,000 cases of cancer, and when he looked at the result given a person's height, he found that the cancer risk rises by 10 percent for every four inches above the average height.

"If you were comparing a five-foot guy to a basketball player who's over seven feet tall, then that basketball player would have around twice the risk of cancer across the board," he said.

In the study, which was published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B, Nunney explained that one possible reason why tall people have an increased risk of cancer may be because of the simple fact that they have more cells(细胞) in their bodies. The more cell division happens in you, the greater the chances that cells will lead to tumour(肿瘤) growth.

Nunney found that the connection between the height and cancer risk was nearly the same with 18 out of the 23 types of cancer he tracked. He also discovered that skin cancer risk had an unexpectedly strong relationship with the height. And taller women had an increased risk of thyroid(甲状腺) cancer, as well.

Smile Train is a charity that helps millions of children around the world, who suffer from a facial defect. The defect happens when a baby's top lip or mouth doesn't form properly before birth. Eating and drinking is very difficult for these babies. The charity provides free operations, which give these children a new smile, and with it, new hope and a new beginning.

Children with the defect need all the help. Although many sufferers are accepted by their families, sadly, others are not. In some countries, children with this defect are often abandoned at birth because their parents feel ashamed of them or cannot afford the operations. The good news is that the operation is not difficult. It takes less than an hour and costs the family nothing. The charity raises money and finds the right medical volunteers to perform the operations.

A Smile Train doctor from the UK said, "Each child who has the operation is given a second chance at life. After years of staying at home, the children can finally go to school and be happy. Every year I perform hundreds of operations free of cost through Smile Train. Some of the stories I have heard are quite surprising. One newborn baby girl was found abandoned on a train. Luckily for her, she was found and adopted(收养) by a passenger. This lady then heard about Smile Train and brought the baby to our hospital. I did the operation and gave hope to the family. Experienced doctors like me share our skills with local doctors. In this way make sure that these operations will always be available."

Something that I learnt from both my parents was the importance of having respect(尊重) for other people. I remember one day when we were travelling on a bus and1 sat down while other people were standing. My mother shouted at me "2 immediately! You have young legs and you don't need to sit down." At the time I felt shamed for being told of 3 , but now I understand. I think children nowadays have 4 that respect and it really makes me angry if I see children sitting down while 5 people are standing.

Stay away from electronic products when you are studying.  Teenagers spend too much time on these digital devices than they do in real tasks. The games and activities can bring bad influence to your schoolwork.

Don't be afraid to say NO to others. You don't have to be available for others all the time. Sometimes you need to focus, but your friends want to ask you to hang out. Just let them know you are busy.  You need to focus on your own task. Get started right away for what you want.

Let's start with the ways to get health care. Telemedicine can allow a patient to use technology to see the doctor online and get a diagnosis(诊断) and instructions without leaving home.

In addition, there are many patient websites. These allow for different kinds of interactions about our health needs without involving the medical team. Setting a date with doctors and reading lab results are readily achieved by technology.

A whole new age of medical care seems likely to come in the future. But every coin has two sides. What might be on the other side of techno-health care?

Firstly, we should think about the health care experience as a whole. A usual visit to a doctor begins with a receptionist, who can see and tell how a patient is doing. This may influence the treatment effect. It's unlikely that a patient website will have such intuition.

Next, sharing the details of one's life requires trust, which takes time to build. This is certainly true in health care, where some of life's best and worst moments involve doctors. The human touch should not be undervalued and is unlikely to be there over the smartphone.

Lastly, test results can be difficult to understand. When someone without a medical degree sees a flagged result with no explanation on the website, there's room for all kinds of stories to form in their minds—and also great worry.

So how does medicine adapt(适应) to the new technology age? Very talented companies are working on it. There is medical equipment(设备) that can be used at home to send necessary signs and heart sounds through telemedicine. It seems likely that some companies will find a way to explain test results.

But what it will not achieve is the warmth of human interaction and touch. Patients often need someone to listen to—and care about—their journey story, which will never be realized through a human-less technology. Technology should be a tool, but depending on it totally will most certainly have unexpected effects. Let's not allow our humanity to be one of them.

Everyone has heard terrible stories about sharks as "man-eaters" and most people are afraid of them. But in fact not all the sharks harm people.

There are 368 kinds of sharks and they mainly eat plants or fish. Only three kinds of sharks are dangerous to humans—tiger sharks, bull sharks and great white sharks. These sharks sometimes harm humans, but only ten are killed all over the world each year.

Like most wild animals, sharks usually prefer to avoid humans. For example, divers(潜水员) report that they can swim safely even with the sharks if they are friendly to them. When a shark comes at a diver, it is usually because the diver swam closely after it or tried to touch it.

Every year, fishermen kill more than 100 million sharks for their fins(鱼翅), which are used to make shark's fin soup. They catch the shark, cut off its fin and throw the live shark back into the sea. If a shark has no fin, it cannot swim and it dies

    ▲    First, sharks help to stop the numbers of seals(海豹) and sea lions from growing too fast, which reproduce(繁殖) very quickly and eat huge amounts of fish. If there were fewer sharks, some parts of the ocean would soon run out of fish. Another reason to protect sharks is that they are helpful in people's fight against cancer. Sharks do not get cancer and scientists believe that there is something special in their body. However, without sharks for further research, scientists may never find out.

How to save sharks? One way is to stop buying shark's fin soup. Another is to let people know that most sharks do not harm humans. Actually, sharks help to keep the oceans clean by eating dead and dying sea life.

Calvin waited outside Trudy's bedroom. Then it happened—a scream, a very loud scream. Calvin ran to his room and dived into bed.

He heard Mama coming down the hall.

"Did you do this?" his mother asked. Calvin looked out from under the covers. His mother stood over him, holding a rubber spider(蜘蛛).

"Do what?" he asked.

"You put that thing in my bed," Trudy told him, stepping out from behind Mama.

"Don't think that just because it's your birthday you can get away with something like this," Mama scolded.

"You do want your present, don't you?" That wiped the smile off Calvin's face.

"Of course I do," he said.

"Then you apologize."

Calvin dropped his head. "Sorry Trudy," he muttered(嘟囔).

"Here," Mama said. "Happy birthday." At the breakfast table she handed Calvin an envelope. Inside were tickets to the show of Lomax the Magnificent, the world-famous magician. "You've got two tickets there," Mama said, "and I know someone who'd really love to go along." She smiled at Trudy.

"You don't mean here, do you?" Calvin asked, eyeing his little sister.

"Well, that would be really nice. But those tickets are yours. If you want to ask somebody ..." Calvin didn't wait for his mother to finish. He rushed out of the house to call Rodney, his pal next door, that the two of them were going to see Lomax the Magnificent.
