Have you ever noticed something around you that you' ve never seen before? They all came about because someone invented them. Most inventions begin with an idea. Someone sees a need or a problem. Then he or she thinks of an idea to meet that need or solve the problem. 

But not all inventions happen on purpose. They may come up with something by working on an idea and invent something else by chance. Or an inventor might make a mistake that turns out to be a good idea. 

Between AD 600 and 900, scientists in ancient China were working in a lab when they invented fireworks by accident. They were working on an invention that would help people live forever. They mixed materials together like salt, charcoal, and sulphur. They put the mixture into pieces of bamboo. Then they threw them into a fire. This is how fireworks were invented. 

In 1905, a boy named Frank Epperson left a cup of soda outside all night. It had a wooden stick in it. The soda froze in the cold evening. In the morning, Frank tasted the frozen soda. He shared the frozen soda with his friends. All of them spoke highly of his new invention. It tasted really good! He called his invention" Episicle". 

In 1968, scientist Spencer Silver was researching adhesives when he discovered one that stuck to things, but could then be easily taken away. For years he tried to find a use for his invention. At the same time, another scientist named Art Fry was singing. He used small pieces of paper to mark the songs in his book. He needed bookmarks that would stay in place. Silver and Fry discussed their ideas and created the Post-it note.

Peking Opera

PekingOperais considered thequintessence of China, but actually, its language is not the dialect of Beijing. In 1790, the "Four Great Anhui Troupes" traveled toBeijing, the capital of the Qing Dynasty, to perform for the Imperial Court, They createdPeking Opera by mixing their local opera with the others in Hubei, Shaanxi and Zhejiang. The basic skills include singing, speaking, dancing and acrobatic fighting. In general, the roles on the stage are divided into four categories: Sheng, Dan, Jing and Chou. Exaggerated make-up helps to build different characters. 

Huangmei Opera

Huangmei Opera, which originated in Huangmei County, Hubei Province and developed in Anqing, Anhui Province, is one of China's five major operas. Dating back to the TangDynasty(618——907), it was first sung by women when they were picking tea. Known as theTea Picking Tune, the opera has gone through several stages including one-man shows, three-role playlets, sanda qichang (three performers play percussion music while seven sing) and orchestral music accompaniment. The costumes show strong Han characteristics, but heavy facial makeup is seldom used. 

Yue Opera

Yue Opera, known as the second national opera, originated in the late 19th century inShengzhou of Zhejiang Province, developed in Shanghai and spread throughout the world. There were only male performers when it was created, but with the development of both the opera and people's mind, female performers are increasing. Its performance is characterized by beautiful singing with lyrical expressions. Due to the gentle characteristic, the opera is a perfect way to show love stories. Yue Opera uses soft and natural makeup, and the beautiful and painting methods make the characters look more lively.

Last week we went on a school trip to a science museum. Ms Liu, the guide, showed us around a smart home.

We started with the front door. Ms Liu asked me to ring the doorbell. I didn't notice the tiny camera that was fixed just above it. After I pressed (按) the doorbell, the camera sent a live video (视频直播) to the homeowners. "They can electronically open the door when they are not at home," said Ms Liu.

The other thing I couldn't see on the door was a lock. "There must be one," I thought. At this time, Ms Liu took out a smart phone and put it against the door. And it opened. "Oh, the key is on the smart phone."

After entering the living room, I saw a computer on a table. By using the computer, the owners can control how much energy is used. In this way, they can manage their living cost.

We're staying with Lucy's uncle in Hunan Province, and I'm having a  (wonder) time here in Zhangjiajie. It's a magic land of mountains, forests and rivers. It's very large. It's famous  the strange shape of its tall rocks. Some of  (they) look like humans, and others look like wild animals.

Few people knew about online food delivery (外卖) apps ten years ago, but today, many would find it hard to live without them. For better or for worse, online food delivery services have changed the way we eat. 

These services no doubt have many advantages. They provide jobs for millions of people and help restaurants find more customers. Since the apps are very easy to use, they also do good to customers: we can now have meals delivered at any time of day. This is especially important for people who might not have time to cook. Not only do these apps save time, they also provide us with plenty of restaurants to choose from.  They can buy meals and foods more easily with these apps.

 First, they make it even easier to order unhealthy food. Food safety is another problem: it can be hard to know where the food comes from. As delivery men need to send the orders as quickly as possible, some pay little attention to traffic rules.  What's more, delivery services are creating too much packaging waste, and this will be harmful to the environment.

There are many advantages of online food delivery services, but we need to make sure that we make the right choices in the long run. We should do our best to avoid waste. We also need to make sure what we eat is healthy. Next time you are thinking about ordering in, ask yourself whether you really need to. Most of the time, it's better to buy what you need and cook by yourself.

It may sound hard to believe that animals can predict earthquakes, but many events seem to support this idea.

On 4th February 1975, Chinese officials ordered people in Haicheng, Liaoning Province to leave their homes and stay outdoors. They believed a disaster (灾难) was coming, partly because of animals' strange behaviour. For example, people reported seeing groups of toads (蟾蜍) appear in the streets and hibernant (冬眠的) snakes coming out of the ground. Just hours later, a large 7.3-magnitude earthquake rocked the city.

Another example happened in December 2004 in a national park in Sri Lanka. The animals seemed to sense that something was wrong that day. The birds flew away for no reason, and the elephants ran to higher ground. A few minutes later, there was a huge earthquake deep under the sea.

However, scientists say that while these are interesting examples of animals behaving strangely before earthquakes, it doesn't necessarily mean that animals have the ability to predict natural disasters. It could just be a reaction. All animals have the instinct (本能) to avoid dangers.

So how do they do it? Well, animals have highly developed senses that allow them to pick up on environmental changes that we might not even notice. Some have extremely strong hearing or smell, while others can detect changes in atmospheric pressure (大气压). For example, fish can sense changes in water pressure, so they may jump out of the water or swim in unusual ways before an earthquake.

Although scientists may not agree on animals' special ability, it doesn't hurt to pay a little more attention to the animals around you.

Family education plays a big role in one's life. Good parents will greatly influence their children. Our group wants to know what great values teenagers learn from their parents and how often they communicate with their parents. So a survey was made among 1,000 students in our school including the first, second and third students. Here are the diagrams showing the results.

Family is the first classroom for teenagers, and parents are their first teachers. The character and habits that teenagers develop have a lot to do with their parents. Parents should pay attention to their words and acts because teenagers will follow parents' behavior. Parents should serve as role models for their teenage children. They should show positive behavior (积极行为), such as kindness, honesty, and respect, which their children can learn from them. By setting a good example, parents can help shape their children's character and habits in a positive way.
