Dragon-Head-Raising Festival is celebrated ①    ▲     the second day of the second Chinese lunar month to show respect to Dragon King and wish good weather for a big harvest. It is considered the start of spring and farming.

After a long winter, spring comes and animals are awake, but the weather is dry and farming needs water. The story goes that after this day, the Dragon King who controls clouds and rains would wake from his winter sleep and bring rainfall for the crops. It is said that after that day there will be more and more rain.

The most well - known tradition on the day is having a haircut. It's a sign of good luck and energy in the whole year. However,    it    is    very    bad    luck    to    get    a    haircut    during    the    first lunar    month.

Eating "dragon" food is another important part of celebrations. As we all know, Chinese are good ②    ▲     connecting certain food with luck, so food eaten on this day also gets special names. Noodles which are long and thin are called "dragon beard (long xu)." Dumplings are called "dragon ears (long er)." Spring rolls are "dragon scales (long lin)", and people call popcorn "dragon seeds (long zi)".

Those celebration activities may be different in the south and the north, and some activities are remained to nowadays, while some are just kept in the past. But the wish for a good year ahead is the same despite the change of time or space.

Friendship comes before competition. It's easy to say but hard to do. However,11-year-old Jerome, a boy from Australia, did it and set a good example for us.

Jerome was good at running. Of all the races he took part in, he always got the first prize. But last November, after giving up winning a school race, the boy won the (heart) of thousands of people. In the race, kind Jerome ran back to help his good friend Seth to stand up again after he (fall) down. And then he encouraged him (keep) running and let him cross the finishing line first.

Seth, ten years old, was born with cerebral palsy (脑瘫). After he moved to the school last year, he got lots of problems. And he often felt lonely and (happy). Noticing that, his teacher Mrs Taylor (introduce) Seth to Jerome. She asked Jerome to help Seth with things like (go) to the washroom. The two boys soon became good friends. Because of his (ill), Seth had a big head. Some students refused (make) friends with Seth and often laughed at him. Jerome (brave) stopped them.

Seth's father thanked Jerome for treating his son nicely, "He is such a good child." The two  (boy) story got popular quickly after Jerome's mother Susan shared it on the Internet. "These boys didn't win but they were champions (冠军)," said the mother.
