Today, the hot pot is one of the most popular forms of cooking in China, and nearly every town and city has some hot pot restaurants. Some people might ask how hot pot becomes so popular. In China, people often joke that there's no problem that a hot pot can't solve. Over a hot pot, people can talk about not just food, but friendship. The food may soon be forgotten, but the friendship will stay with us forever. Even today, I remember all the good times I spent with my friends in Chongqing.

One day, a kind man gave Fred a large bowl of rice. Fred didn't eat up the rice in one go. He put the remaining（剩余的）rice on the table. He lay on his bed and kept an eye on it. After a while, Fred fell asleep and had a dream. He dreamed that there was a famine（饥荒）in his village. He sold his remaining rice and got some money. He used the money to buy a pair of goats（山羊）. His goats had kids in months, so he got more goats. He sold some goats and became rich. He bought a large house. He fell in love with a beautiful lady and they got married.

Fred dreamed that he was dancing with his wife. He felt so excited that he kicked in air and his leg hit the bowl on the table. The bowl with rice dropped and broke into pieces. The noise woke him up. At once, Fred realized that he had been dreaming. He also realized that he could get nothing if he didn't make a change. Then he decided to get rid of his laziness. Soon he found a job and worked hard.

I often hear some students say English is difficult, and it gives them a headache. So they can't learn it well. But English is very easy for me. I'm good at it. I'm very glad to tell you something about how I study English.

First, I think an interest in English is very important. When I was in Grade One, we had a new subject—English. It was fresh for me. I was interested in it, so I worked hard at it. Soon we had an English exam and I got a very good mark. How happy I was! After that, I learned English harder and harder. Our English teacher often teaches us English songs. The songs sound nice. I often think how interesting English is!

Second, I think English is a foreign language. I should learn it well in the following ways: Listen to the teacher carefully, speak bravely, read aloud and have a good vocabulary (词汇) . Then practice again and again, never be tired. And I also have a good habit: Asking whenever I have a question, I must make it clear by asking our English teacher. How happy I am when I understand!

Besides this, I often read English stories, jokes and easy novels. From these I know English is not only interesting, but also useful. They help me understand a lot of things. So to do more reading is an important way to learn English well.

And I also do some exercises from our class magazines, and I often write English diaries. English has become a close friend of mine.

Now I have learned English for more than two years. I always keep the first position in our school. From these words, I hope every student can learn English well.

In the US, many people attend New Year parties. They drink, dance, and cheer at midnight.

Yoga Club

Yoga not only improves flexibility (柔韧性), but also helps people relax. Students will have the chance to exercise while reducing some stress from life. The club will be open to 10—16 members from Grade 7 to Grade 12, and will meet once weekly (on Tuesday).

Basketball Club

Students will be able to develop their basketball skills and have the opportunity to compete in basketball games with members from other international schools. The club will be open to 10~16 members from Grade 5 to Grade 8, and will practice on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Public Speaking Club

The Public Speaking Club will be centered around the personal development of students along with developing public speaking skills. The club will focus on all skills in giving better speeches and improving communication skills. The club will be open to 10~12 members from Grade 7 to Grade 12, and will meet once weekly (on Wednesday).

Media Club

The Media Club teaches students the basics of journalism. The club has a wide range of activities like interviewing teachers and students, writing about big events on campus, and operating the weekly school radio broadcasts. The club will be open to 8~12 members from Grade 6 to Grade 12 and will meet once weekly (on Monday).

Do you speak a dialect (方言) in daily life? Can you understand some dialects besides (you) own dialect? Some local dialects are danger of disappearing as they are becoming less used in daily life. To save them, the Chinese government (start) the National Language Resource Protection Project a few years ago.

So far, this project (research) more than 1,700 places and over 120 languages and dialects. It has helped China to build the (large) language resource database (资源库) in the world. Through the database, people can (easy) learn dialects.

Dialects are the key to storing local cultures, they are on their way to disappearing. So did China make this big database? A lot of effort has been put into the project (make) it happen. Practise a lot

China has many heroes in science. Nan Rendong is famous scientist in China. He is well-known for his great (achieve) in building the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST). FAST is the largest radio telescope in the world.

Nan Rendong spent over twenty years (work) on this project. At first, he had to go to many far-away places across the country. These places often didn't have good roads. Around the 10th century, the rulers of the Liao Dynasty (916—1125) made it a royal (皇家的) hunting place because it was home to beautiful forests, green grasslands, clear lakes and different kinds of wild animals. Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty (1644—1911) liked Saihanba so much that he made hunting there a royal festival. The royal festival finally stopped in 1860 because of no money and it had to be open to the public. After that, the cutting down of trees and wild fires changed green Saihanba into gray deserts. By the 1950s, the beauty of Saihanba had completely disappeared with only one tree left. The tree is now famous as "the Tree of Honor".

On seeing the tree, Chinese scientists made up their minds and dreamt of restoring Saihanba. In February, 1962, the plans were made and more than 120 foresters joined 242 local people in Saihanba to begin rebuilding it. Over the next 55 years, those first tree-planters fought against many difficulties to continue planting trees. After their death, their children and relatives followed their footsteps and went on with their hard work of planting trees.

Today, the scientists' dream has come true and beautiful grassland and flowers appear again around the tree of honor. Chinese people successfully changed Saihanba in the past half-century.

The workers knew Big Bird needed lots of food to reach its full adult size. In the wild, a group of pelicans work together to catch fish. But Big Bird didn't have a group, so the workers fed it fish. Eating fish, Big Bird got bigger.

Everyone at the resort hoped that Big Bird would fly away and go back to its group when it got healthy. But Big Bird needed to learn how to fly! The workers tried to teach it.

After more practice, Big Bird showed its growing number of fans a successful flight (飞行). Just as it was getting dark, Big Bird landed at the same place where it took off. "We're so proud of it. It can fly!" Big Bird's trainers said.

No one knows how long Big Bird will stay at the resort. Maybe one day it will fly away, find a group of pelicans to be with, and never come back to the place where it learned to fly. But before that happens, the workers and visitors are happy to be with it.

This bookstore is in Phases 2 and 3 of Haibin Square in Bao'an. It was planned to be finished at the end of 2024. And it will open to everyone in 2025. When it's done, its floor area will reach about 131,000 square meters. It will have two floors above the ground and two floors under the ground.

Piezoelectric (压电的) roads mix traditional asphalt (柏油) with new materials. They use vibrations (震动) from passing cars to produce electricity. Piezoelectricity, in fact, is nothing new. This seems to be a dream, but a company has almost made it come true. By sensing the weight of a vehicle, the company's smart roads can record the speed of each wheel. After having collected traffic data (数据) , the roads will send it to the drivers.

Roads that never freeze

A tech company has developed the snowless roads. The development is useful because driving in snowy weather can be dangerous. When they feel snow or ice on their surfaces, the roads will heat themselves up so that the snow or ice will turn into water and get dry gradually. The project has been successfully tested on a few roads and in some car parks.

Self-awareness is an ability to see yourself clearly. You may know that you love playing an instrument because you're good at it, and music makes you happy. Or you know you prefer watching TV on your own because it helps you relax. And it also means understanding how your thoughts, feelings and behaviour can influence other people.

Knowing what you like, dislike and more about yourself allows you to be wise about friendship, schoolwork and social life. It helps build confidence. Being self-aware doesn't mean only thinking of yourself. By understanding your own feelings, you have more understanding of other people, too.

A good way to learn about anything is to ask questions. Ask yourself questions that start with "What" instead of "Why". So if you don't understand why you keep arguing with a friend, ask yourself what you disagree on instead of why you're arguing. If you're wondering whether you like a book, ask yourself what were the last three books you loved and what you liked about them. To recognize your own likes and dislikes is a good way to learn more about yourself.

Learning to be more self-aware is a skill, and this means you learn it as you grow. So don't be afraid of taking risks. And encourage yourself to try out new things, like playing a new sport or listening to different music. Learn more about yourself and bring out the best in you.

When Dillen, a professor at Leiden University, and her workmates do studies in the Netherlands, they find that about 70% ~ 75% of people do other things while eating. This habit may be bad for our health. The studies show that when we don't focus on eating, we often eat more and feel hungry again sooner. Over time, this can lead to putting on weight.

Why does this happen? When eating, it usually takes our bodies 20 minutes to send "full" signals to the brain. But if we're distracted, our brains are too weak to notice these signals well. We can't feel how full we are and may not taste food properly when these signals are not received. In one study, some people were asked to drink sweet water while working out tasks (任务) in a brain scanner (扫描仪). When the tasks were hard, they felt the sweet water was less sugary. Another study in 2021 also found playing difficult games made food smell weaker. Not enjoying food fully makes us unhappy. A study in 2024 showed people enjoyed fun activities less when distracted. To feel better, they might eat more.

So putting down your phone during meals could help you eat less and enjoy more!

"Look," the old man said, "do you see that fern (蕨类植物) and bamboo there?"
