What is it like to be a horse? I can tell you because I've been one all my life. And what a life it has been!

 It had plenty of grass, a pond, and trees for shade. There was a shed(棚) at one end where we could stand when it was cold. Outside the fence lay more fields, a stream, and our master's house. 

I ran and played with the other colts(小雄马驹). These colts were all older and bigger than me. Sometimes their play turned rough, with lots of kicking and biting. 

One day, my mother called me away from them. "I hope you will grow up gentle and kind, " she told me. "I do not want you to bite or kick, even at play. You should always be good, and do your work as well as you can. " 

Our master's name was Farmer Grey. He always had kind words and pa ts for all the horses. He was kind and fair to his workers as well. 

Most of our days were quiet and pleasant. Yet there was one other incident that I have never forgotten. One day, I was grazing in the field with the other colts when we heard dogs howling in the distance.  The hounds(猎狗) came first, racing after a speedy rabbit. Next came a group of riders. 

The rabbit scampered down the hill and leaped across the stream. The hounds followed.  But one slipped on the grass and fell down. His rider, a handsome young man, was flung off. He landed hard and lay still on the grass. 

"I don't understand why people are so interested in hunting, " my mother said. "Then again we're only horses. "

I didn't know the answer to that. But soon I would learn more about the mysterious (神秘的) ways of humans, when I left that pleasant field behind forever. 

Laurie had just come home from school when she heard a light hammering sound coming from Grandpa's study. Curious, she tapped on the door. "Grandpa? Can I come in?"

"Just a second!" Grandpa answered. Laurie heard lots of shuffling (拖着脚走). "Enter!"

Grandpa was sitting empty-handed at his desk, but there were wood shavings everywhere. "Aren't you supposed to be at school?" he asked. 

"It's over at three. What were you doing in here?" Laurie said suspiciously(怀疑地). She saw something wooden poking out from underneath a book. "Aha!" she cried, pulling the object out. "What's this?"

"Well, that's your birthday gift. But now it won't be a surprise, " Grandpa said. 

It was a wooden crocodile with a string attached to the top of its head so the mouth could be opened and shut. 

"It's an ancient Egyptian toy, " Grandpa said. "I made this, but if you were a child in ancient Egypt, you might have something similar. Crocodiles were an important part of Egyptian life, and many crocodiles lived in theNile River. 

"The Egyptians depended on the Nile River for many things. It flooded every year, supplying much-needed water and nutrients to the surrounding land. This made farming easy for the Egyptians. The soft, wet land also made good mud for building mud-brick houses. 

"And the river unified the people of the area by providing a convenient highway for transportation and communication. 

"Ancient Egypt was an agricultural society. " If you were a little Egyptian girl living about four thousand years ago, your father would probably be a grain farmer. Grains were the most common crop, especially w heat and barley, which were used to make bread and beer— the most typical food and drink. 

"Unfortunately, children didn't go to school like you do now. You'd probably spend most days helping your parents. During the harvest season maybe you would bundle(捆扎) wheat up on the farm. Or perhaps you'd be at home, helping to cook or take care of the vegetable garden near your house. "

Just then, Mom called from downstairs, "Laurie! I'm home!"

"Hi, Mom! I'll be right down!" Laurie hollered back. "Thanks, Grandpa. I' ll pretend I never saw this, " she said, putting the crocodile back on the desk. "Until next time!"

"Until next time! Bye, Laurie!"

Here's a joke for you: Why did the crab(螃蟹) cross the road? It didn't. It used the sidewalk. This was one of the top ten jokes in a very unusual competition held in April, 2024. A small museum in southeast England held the inaugural World's Funniest Crab Joke competition. 

You won't be surprised to hear this is the first time this competition has taken place. It was organized by"Europe's first and only"crab museum to celebrate International Crab Day on April 26, 2024. 

The Crab Museum in Margate asked people to share their best crab jokes and the winners were chosen from a list of 700. The crabs themselves were asked to choose which joke they thought was the best!  After the judges—— including some school children from the area——had chosen their favorite jokes, the top four were written on paper and placed in bags along with some tinned fish. These were then thrown into the local tidal(潮汐的) pool and pulled back on strings (细绳). The first one to come back with a crab that could be placed in a bucket was the winner. 

No rude jokes or jokes that were scientifically inaccurate(不准确的) were allowed. One of the aims of the competition was to get people thinking about crabs and nature, according to the museum. 

This year's winner was:

A man walks into a restaurant with a crab under his arm and says, "Do you make crab cakes?"

The manager answers, "Yes, we do. "

"Good, " says the man, " ▲   . "

The joke here is that the manager thinks the man is talking about crab cakes that you would eat at a restaurant, while the man is really talking about a birthday cake for his crab.

One day, a young king went out to hunt deer, when he accidentally became separated from his companions.  Wandering(漫步) about, the king saw a hu t that was surrounded by a garden, and tending the garden was a young woman. 

The king spoke to her, saying, "Tell me, what plants are you growing here?""I am raising pumpkins, " she replied, "as you can see. " She had a quick glance at the pile of pumpkins behind her and gave a quick smile to the king. He couldn't help but smile back. 

As the king returned toward the city, a thought began to grow in him. "Perhaps, " he thought, "I might think up a test to see just how intelligent this young woman might be. "

The king then ordered a soldier to carry to the young woman's house a new jar without handles. The soldier's orders were to tell the young woman that the jar was from the king, and that she was to put an entire pumpkin inside the jar with a small opening at the top, and that both the jar and the pumpkin must remain whole. 

The young woman returned a message to the king that such a task might take some time. Indeed, it was several months before the young woman arrived at the palace. In her hands she held the same jar, and sure enough, an entire pumpkin sat inside it. The king had absolutely no idea how she could have brought this about!

This was her answer to the riddle: She had placed a pumpkin bud(花蕾), one that was still attached to a vine (藤蔓) in the ground, inside the jar through its small opening. Over time,  ▲   .

Today was an amazing day. I went to a concert with my sister. We were surprised 1 the singer was so young. We asked the staff  2 the singer would come on stage. The staff told us  3 the singer would appear in ten minutes. We also wondered  4 the singer learned to sing so well. During the concert, 5 wonderful the songs were! We really enjoyed ourselves.
