Do you like to go to the museum? If yes, you must know there are always many rules in a museum—no playing, no touching or no food,_ things are different in Please Touch Museum.

My name is Jeff. I like learning foreign languages. When I retired (退休) in 2018, I could speak three foreign languages. At that time, my biggest wish was to learn a new one.

Later, I watched a program about Chinese culture on TV. I was so interested in it that I made the decision to learn Chinese. I found a cultural center in the north of London by chance. It offered Chinese language courses fit for me. In March 2019, I began to learn. To attend the classes, I left my home at 5 a.m. every Saturday and drove 3 hours to the cultural center. But this didn't stop me. After class, I practiced a lot. Through learning, I developed a love for Chinese poems and joined in activities like Chinese poetry readings. I increasingly dreamed of visiting China.

My Chinese teacher Mr. Liu always mentioned "It's better to travel ten thousand miles than to read ten thousand books". He suggested that I should take part in a study tour in China So in August 2024, I visited Xi'an with my classmates of the cultural center. During the trip, as the student best at Chinese among us, I tried to act as an interpreter (口译员). I helped my classmates in many ways like asking the way and shopping in Chinese. This experience encouraged me to study further.

The British often say "Learning is a lifelong pursuit (追求)", which means "It is never too late to learn". I will keep on learning Chinese, hoping to be a lifelong learner. I believe that learning Chinese will bring even more possibilities to my life.

Long, long ago, there was a city called Jijiaocheng, so named because it was said to have been built at daybreak.  city was on the rich Liyang Plain (平原). Many waterways. (provide) water for crop fields and the people living inside and outside of the city.

The rulers of Jijiaocheng asked the people  (cut) down trees in the mountains. The wood was shipped by  (worker) to the city for tall buildings. Standing in them, the city's rulers will be able to see  (they) people and crops between the waterways. In autumn, plenty of rice was brought to the city.

This is not some bedtime story. It  (real) took place around 4,500 years ago.

Thousands of years later, the once busy  rich Jijiaocheng, which is now in a town of Hunan, came to the notice of the modern world. With the help of archaeologists (考半车) and historians, artists painted recreations of life in Jijiaocheng in a  (tradition) scroll (卷釉).

The scroll was part of a huge project. A group of artists spent two years  it. It includes eight paintings, which are 140 meters long in total. It  (show) early human activities on the Liyang Plain and the prehistoric culture in Hunan.

Oh, no? How silly I was to practice basketball inside! Mom's favorite1 was in pieces! What should I do?

Make a Difference to Your School

Your school offers great chances to study, make friends and try new things. Each term, you have time to use these chances. Also, there is time to think of ways to make a difference to your school. 

Learn more about your school. To learn what happens around your school, join teams to your school or clubs and take part in activities.  These people can give you a better understanding of your school. For example, if your school has a student newspaper, check it out or consider joining it. You will know more about what is happening at school through it.

Find a need and take action.  Maybe you enjoy playing volleyball after class. Now think about ways to make this activity even better. You might wish your school to provide more volley balls for students to use. Once you have your idea, talk to your school to see if students could help. You could offer to hold a book sale to buy sports equipment (器材).

 It may seem simple, but being friendly to others can help create a good environment. This includes saying thank you when a student helps you, cleaning up any mess you make, and saying hello to others in the hallways. A good attitude (态度) can spread.

What are insects (昆虫) like in your eyes? Have you ever noticed them? Insects are very interesting animals. They may be small, but they are smart and hard-working. Scientists have studied different kinds of insects very closely. According to their studies, even the smallest insects have tools to help do their work.

Have you ever seen a little fly called a sawfly? It gets such a name because it has a s aw (锯子) that is used on plants to create a safe space for its eggs. After laying its eggs, the sawfly makes some glue. The glue fixes the eggs to where they are laid.

Another insect that has its own natural tool is the poppy bee (蜂). The bees live in wood. Like people who make things out of wood, poppy bees use special tools to dig nests (巢穴) out of wood. They dig and clean out the nest to make it ready for use. When all is ready, poppy bees cat out pieces of leaves in the shape of a nest. They then join the pieces together and put them into the nest.

Ants are also known for their clever use of natural tools. For example, they drop pieces of leaves into water so that they take in the water. Then the ants carry them back to their nests. There are more insects than any other living things in the world. Every insect is special. The more you notice them, the more they will surprise you.

The Tan family, from Hunan, was new to the block and Mrs. Tan loved to cook. Her family enjoyed her stinky tofu (臭豆腐), so she cooked it twice a week.

One afternoon, they heard a knock on the door. It was from the community workers. They had received a complaint (投诉) from the Tans' neighbors, the Lees, about the smell of the stinky tofu.

Mrs. Tan said sorry and decided that she would close the kitchen window the next time. That was what she did the following week. However, the community worker came to them again for the same problem.

"I have closed the kitchen WINDOWS!" she said in anger. Actually I can't stand the habit of eating durians (榴莲). The smell of the durians is too strong for me.

The community worker then decided to call for a meeting with the durians at the beginning. Both Mrs. Tan and Mrs Lee had a scowl on the faces. They even didn't look at each other. The community worker explained the disagreement. He suggested that the Tans can eat stinky tofu twice a month. Similarity, the Lees should try to cat durians weeks. Mrs Tan agreed and even invited Mrs Lee to taste her sticky tofu.

After a month, the community worker met up with both families to see if they got any progress. Mrs Lee was full of praise, "Your tofu tastes so good! You are a good cook, Mrs Lee. Shall I bring some durians for you next time You might love them". "Perhaps." said Mrs Tan politely. From then on they learned to accept their likes and dislikes.
